I live in Ga, USA. I have been to Ak 4 times and absolutley love it.
It interesting because everyone always says it is too expensive to go to AK. That is not true if you do your research and use your references. All of my Ak trips have been on a shoe-string budget and I haven't missed anything, have seen amazing wildlife and god given gorgeous sceneary and have stayed in some awesome clean & inexpensive cabins and hostels, traveled by Ferry, shuttle, train, air and rental car - I have tried them all and they all work well and cheap if you plan early and do your homework. I have never done an AK cruise - thats too rich for my blood! However, I have done the Inside Passage twice via Ferry. It's how the Alaskans travel and you meet some great folks and get some great "best kept secrets" of their home area.
My original goal was to retire in 2012 and move to AK but some unforseen circumstances have occured so my plan is to move to Ak in spring of 08. I love all of Ak but my favorite is the Kenia penisula. I plan to open a campground with RV and tent spaces as well as a few small cabins. If I can't find the right land to do that then I will probably build a home and use it as a hostel. I have a lot to do in a short period of time to make it all happen, but I will!
