New senior citizen! Aagh! I used to try and avoid hotels, preferring apartments etc owned by locals if possible but find myself in more hotels the older I get. I NEVER do all-inclusive (unless I can't find anywhere else to stay) - virtually none of the money you spend on an all-inclusive ends up in the community you are visiting. Not into aggressive haggling. Remember that your bargain is someone else's poverty. As a tourist you can afford to pay a bit extra - and make a real difference. I'm also into sailing yachts (sailboats to my North American friends) Simple wholesome food and cheap basic hotel rooms are just as good as swanky luxury to me, but a room has to be clean and simple food must be cooked with care and presented with consideration. I give praise where it's due and fiercely criticise where standards are poor whatever the price charged.
