The best way to travel internationally is to blend in. This means you don't wear T Shirts that exclaim '" I am an idiot traveler from America who thinks everyone should speak English!" You don't need the flashiest running shoes or athletic clothes that advertise an American athletic sport. Soccer and rugby are European sports most Americans don't understand or even follow. Don't advertise yourself to a pickpocket or scam artist by wearing your camera hanging in front of you. Carry a small point and shoot camera in your pocket. Learn the country's greeting customs. For example - in France always start a conversation with 'Bonjour Madam or Monsieur" before you even ask for the bathroom. It's just polite and French people are taught that at a vvery young age. You will be surprised how that works. Then you will find that an amazing nimber of people do speak English. Why? They pick up on your accent very quickly and are more cordial when you are also polite.
