This is a very old famous shrine on the top of Mt. Atago. It is up high, so take the elevator if needed. The weekday that I was there, many locals were worshipping. In fact, there was a line. It is a serious place. The koi pond was especially lovely. There was also a small public teahouse that looked inviting.

If one does not know much about Japanese history or culture, this place can be a mystery. There are a few signs in English, but they do not tell enough. It is a beautiful place, but one misses out on the true meaning of it all if one does not understand the background of this shrine (that was us). We spent about 30 minutes here, admiring the garden and the buildings and walking up the steps (it supposed to bring good luck) and then we left.

The first thing that you notice when approaching this place is the intimidating steep stone steps leading up to the temple. It is hard work going up and probably down the steps and be careful doing that or a slip on the steps could result in a nasty injury. The reward on reaching the top is great though as the views looking down on the area is incredible. The shrine itself is beautiful and the locals were queuing up to say a prayer to the god worshipped here. If you don't fancy going up the steps don't worry as there is another more pleasant way of reaching the temple.
