My partner's sister had booked this stay for us as she'd loved her visits here as a child. I too had stayed at St Briavels before but my memory of it was a little hazy. A quick flick through my YHA stamp book revealed I'd last stayed here in 2009. On arrival it all came flooding straight back. We checked in easily as we hadn't forgetten our ID, this is stated on the booking confirmation but the family in front of us had missed this detail. The hostel was clean and tidy. All the bathrooms and self-catering kitchen had been updated since my last stay which was a welcome surprise. None of the rooms are ensuite, it is 12th century castle after all. We arrived knowing it wasn't ensuite as it is clearly stated on the YHA website but again the family in front of us where a little surprised by this. We encountered no problems with this. There were no queues for the toilets or showers over our stay. I loved my stay here and would love to come back for longer. It reminded me how much I love to Youth Hostel. It was something I did frequently as a child but haven't in about 6 years. At Briavels has given me the bug again for hostelling and I can't wait to book my next stay.

Although I didn't meet her, Linda the manager was extremely helpful on the phone and email. Chris was so friendly and welcoming on arrival, and clearly passionate about the history of the castle. The medieval banquet was amazing (my only criticism was that the dressing up clothes were a bit threadbare and in need of some tlc/replacing - saying that - it was a bonus that there were dressing up clothes there anyway), and it was really nice that we were able to take part in craft activities beforehand in preparation for the banquet. The food at the banquet was nice, but the main attraction was Chris's storytelling - he gave a really comprehensive history lesson in such a fun and engaging way. It was also a nice surprise being invited to take part in an archery lesson the next morning - this added to the medieval theme of our stay, and was a nice way of getting lots of YHA guests together, and helping the children to make more friends. There was also a history walk around the castle the next day - we couldn't make this, but we enjoyed doing our own self guided tour with the printout of the castle history. We had a great stay - thank you.

Group of 10 active ladies aged 35-70 ish spent the afternoon canoeing on the Wye a short car drive away had decided to continue celebrating overnight at the castle. Chris greeted us warmly and coped admirably with our high spirits. Our rooms were comfortable bunk rooms but few power points and you do need a jumper. There were heaters and we were warm enough. Stairs steep and all toilets and showers on ground floor-all newly fitted and spotless in East tower. we had pre-booked the banquet. We all dressed up as did a few of the other diners. Chris dressed as the constable entertained and instructed us in banquet etiquette - no cutlery. We fully entered into the spirit of things and had a fantastic time. There is a bar on site and you aren't supposed to drink your own alcohol. The rosé could do with improvement. The food was enjoyed by all . The breakfast the next day was good. Cooked breakfast and help yourself to as much toast, cereal, tea and cofee as required. To stay in a real castle is a great experience. We all enjoyed the very informative tour the following morning .If you are of a nervous disposition don't take the tour until after your last night!! There are stocks in the grounds - good photo opportunities!!!!! We had a fantastic stay .A big thank you to all the staff and the YHA for making these fantastic buildings accessable to more people.

Stayed here last weekend and it was phenomenal.
The staff love the place and are very enthusiastic. We stayed as a group around 60 and were very well accommodated. The place has real character and you can feel is medieval heritage. It is still very much a castle and hasn't been turned into a trendy boutique hotel.

We had an excellent stay at St Briavels in February 2018. We stayed in a spacious family room and enjoyed a medieval banquet complete with dressing up. Our daughter (8) was entranced by the host who was also our historical guide. Some areas can be chilly but it’s a 12th C castle so to be expected! A unique experience.

This is a wonderful place. You walk in through the old gatehouse between the towers and into a real old castle (fortified hunting lodge, apparently). The bedrooms and lounges still retain the feel of being in a castle and it was magical for our children. Staff were great, the village is lovely Forest of Dean attractions are on your doorstep. I can't recommend it enough for families with youngish children.

We have tried to get into this hostel a number of times over the last few years and finally managed to the weekend before Christmas and were lucky enough to have the Castle to ourselves and it was well worth the wait. The building is great especially the lounge. The medieval banquet great fun and very educational and a game of Cleudo and a castle tour after dinner rounded off a great day. Location great for walking and cycling.

Had a really great stay, thanks to Chris and his fellow staff putting the effort into the medieval themed banquet and just being relentlessly cheerful and helpful. And it's a real castle!!! Brilliant!!! Everything in the hostel is slightly strangely arranged (it's an old castle, not a hotel) but perfectly usable: kitchen and bathrooms are small, but the lounge is epic! Our room was a bit noisy due to people upstairs walking around late and there being bare wooden floors (yep, it's an old castle). I don't think it would be a regular problem, and even so I'd still go back without hesitation!

Friendly staff who were really helpful, a great mix of other guests, accommodation was comfy and village nice to walk around. I recommend the Banquet which was so entertaining and interesting. We had a fun time staying at St. Briavels. I was traveling with my family and we had a private room. The room had a window seat and one wall looked to be part of the original castle. The staff were very friendly. One staff member in particular went out of his way to chat with us and entertain my child. We had dinner and breakfast at the hostel and both were better than expected. Really excellent dessert! I loved the grounds and there is such a sense of history there that it's almost a tangible feeling. Haunted? It's definitely possible.

This was our second stay at St Briavels Castle. There was no banquet this time but we were aware of this when booking. We enjoyed our last stay, especially the paranormal activity. This time was unevenftful. This may partly be due to being in a different room although the whole Castle seemed quieter. Maybe being summer as opposed to the middle of winter made a difference to the atmosphere as well. Despite a few differnt faces the staff were friendly and helpful as usual. St Briavels was again clean and tidy and we enjoyed our stay. The only critisism was my Son wanted to bring a friend but when trying to book directly through the YHA it said there were no beds available. On arrival we found our room virtually empty and on the second night approximately 8 beds available in our room alone. Other guests had a similar problem. It is really hard to find availability on a weekend but this may be just due to a error with the website or booking system.

Thank you for your lovely review. We hope that you are able to discover some of our other amazing YHA properties during 2017. From modern city centre sites to manor houses, cottages by the sea to huts on a mountain top there are some fantastic destinations! Apologies about the cold spots in the Castle. We always advise a woolly jumper or two for the winter months as some areas can be a little cooler than the temperature of a normal family home. We are looking for ways to remedy this for the future. We hope to welcome you back again soon!

I booked ahead since I had wanted to stay at this castle. I wasn't disappointed: sturdy stone walls, even across one entire side of the bedroom.which also had a huge window looking on to trees. Interesting people - we all chatted since it's a quiet time of year. A beautiful and atmospheric location too with a garden and outside benches within its curtilage. The staff were helpful. The only let down were the limited no frills washing facilities which took the edge off an otherwise great stay.
Linda H, Manager at St Briavels Castle, responded to this review
We are pleased that the wait was worth it for you! We agree that the rooms are full of character, with authentic walls and original features dating back hundreds of years. Sadly the Grade 1 listed nature of the building is very restrictive and it limits the scope for modernisation. We will regrettably never be able to offer en-suite rooms or be able to move our washroom facilities so they are closer to the bedrooms. However, we have upgraded our East Tower washroom facilities in early 2016 (which balance the mix of old stone features and modern washroom units well) and we are working on bringing the rest of our facilities up to the same standard over the next few years. We hope to welcome you back again in the future.

Stayed here on my way to North Wales after a tour of Bath with 3 of my friends. This hostel in an old castle is an awesome idea. I really enjoyed the stay in the prison room reading carvings from prisoners from the 1700s.
The people running the hostel are lovely, The nearby pub was lovely. The facilities are clean and tidy. Really enjoyed the archery lessons.
The only issue was the toilet doors which were weak & breaking. Other than that this is an excellent hostel.
Linda H, Manager at St Briavels Castle, responded to this review
Thank you for choosing to break your journey with a visit to our Castle. The Prison is my favourite room due to the physical link to the poor souls who spent time locked up, possibly dreaming of escape or freedom. Particularly moving is the curse and lament in one of the windows. Who etched the windmills and were they are view of home? We hope that you had a fabulous time in North Wales too.

Thank you for your lovely review. We never get tired of seeing the look on our visitors faces when they arrive and realise that we really are a real Castle, with over 900 years of history and many original features contained within our walls, and they are going to get to explore and sleep in it! It makes me smile (& feel very lucky) every day I come to work too!

Lovely room, friendly and helpful staff, and an excellent medieval banquet. Self-catering kitchen small for the number of people using it. Only one kettle which wasn't enough. Either need more kettles or a hot water dispenser. The price for a 4-bed family room was £64 per night, but I notice that this price has gone up a lot to £89 per night for the same time next year. This is an increase of 39% and even with membership discounts it only comes down to £80 per night. I think this is too expensive for a YHA family room, as it will be cheaper to rent a cottage with your own bathroom and kitchen than it will be to stay in the hostel with shared bathroom and kitchen. I don't think that we will renew our membership now that room prices have gone up so much, which is a shame because we do enjoy hostelling.
Linda H, Manager at St Briavels Castle, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We always really value hearing back from our guests about their experiences to help us improve for future visits. I apologise that you experienced reduced facilities whilst self-catering. The shortage of kettles and other equipment has been addressed, but sadly this has not been in time to benefit our half term guests.
Thank you also for your feedback about pricing. YHA pricing does fluctuate throughout the year depending on demand and the season. As valued members you can benefit from our regular special flash sale discounts that can reduce prices by up to 50% during school holidays. We really hope that this issue will not affect your decision to renew your membership; as along with accommodation discounts, membership also saves you money on entrance fees to local attractions, along with 10% on purchases in shops such as Blacks, Milletts and Cotwolds Outdoors.

I cannot thank St Briavels enough for an exceptional weekend. I organised a Hen weekend for 18 people in March 15. From the initial organisation and booking to the actual coordination of the weekend itself, the staff were helpful, supportive & communicative. The flexibility to be able to book the East tower for the weekend enabled a more private experience. The rooms were clean and warm with comfortable beds (if a little squeaky when you turn over). The kitchen was well supplied with all necessary equipment. The breakfast was very good value for money and was an added bonus. The additional activities organised by St Briavels were outstanding. The medieval dinner was exceptional - it was well organised, plenty of well cooked food and served by the (incredibly adaptable) staff who appeared able to turn their hands to anything. The 'compere' for the night really added to the occasion and cleverly included everyone at the dinner. The Castle tour and archery were organised well and delivered with enthusiasm - these were excellent activities.
I cannot thank the staff enough for everything they did for our party... they are a friendly, highly adaptable and skilled team - an asset to St Briavels and YHA. Well done...

Stayed at this hostel with the kids who were delighted to be staying in a real castle, even more so that we slept in a family room that used to be King John's banqueting hall, had dinner in what was his bedroom, dressed up as knights and generally revelled in the medieval atmosphere! Staff were brilliant, offering archery in the grounds and a really interesting tour. A huge bargain, great dinner and breakfast too.
