While staying in Okarito Holiday Cottage you will have full access to all spaces in the cottage. Beyond the house there is a tennis court, directly opposite the house - we have tennis racquets for you to use. Our guests arrive and depart independently; we are not on site. Okarito is a very small town and you will need to collect provisions on your way in. Upon booking, we will send you full instructions about how to access the cottage. The rest is up to you and yor sense of adventure... There is lots to do in Okarito. The adjacent Lagoon is one of New Zealand's largest tidal lagoons and native bird wetland habitats. Take a boat tour or hire a kayak and guide yourself, both are great ways to experience the local fauna and flora of the wetlands, and to see spectacular views of the southern Alps. The beaches are dramatic and fantastic for exploring and beach combing. There are graded department of conservation walkways across the wetland, along the coastline and up into the hills - all with spectacular views. Further afield, you are 25 mins from Franz Josef Glacier township. Everything in Okarito is within walking distance. The beginning of all walking tracks, the boat tour, Kiwibird tour and kayak rental activities are all within 5 mins walk. You will need a vehicle if you intend visiting the Franz Josef glacier region which is 25 mins by car. We only accept a minimum of two nights bookings. PLEASE NOTE: Okarito is a remote destination suitable for people who want to get away from the very busy tourist town of Franz Josef while being able to access the glacier country. There is no grocery store or petrol station in Okarito so guests will need to bring all provisions with them - available at the grocery store in Franz. The nearest centre is Franz Josef township - approximately 25 mins drive away.More

About the neighborhood
The best thing about being in Okarito is being near New Zealand's natural wonders. The lagoon is perfect for bird watching and by night there are Kiwi birds (and a tour company that will take you to see them) just by the village. There are both kayak rentals and boat tour operators in the village which make access the lagoon very easy. The Village is also the departure point for a number of stunning day walks that enable visitors to see the many natural wonders that the South Island wilderness has to offer.
Getting around
Once in Okarito you will find everything is in walking distance. The beach, the wharf, the lagoon and beach, Kayak rentals (and coffee shop in the summer), the boat tour company, the wetland Boardwalk and the Department of Conservation tracks.
