2 Bedrooms , 2 Bathrooms , Sleeps 5
Westgate, County Durham, England
Traditional Weardale stone cottage is in a convenient village location and is an excellent base for exploring the north-east of England, including Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire and Cumbria. The cottage is located in the village of Westgate, in beautiful and rugged Weardale, County Durham.

Please be aware that due to the age and construction of the cottage, whereby stone floors are laid directly onto the earth, the humidity levels are higher than in modern houses, and you may notice a slight musty smell as a result.

This is a very old traditional stone cottage, providing basic accommodation. So if you are looking for modern fittings and luxury, this is not the place for you. But if you are the adventurous type, think of it as your own private bunkhouse!

There is electric heating, BUT please be aware that in very cold wea...

The cottage is really two terraced cottages knocked into one (at ground level), the result is plenty of space downstairs and upstairs. There are good options for keeping it warm, including a multifuel fire, air source heat pump, Rayburn range (not needed for cooking!), and...More

As others have said the cottage has a full complement of facilities. Central heating, Freesat, fridge, utility room with washer and dryer, shower, microwave, oven and hob, electric kettle, plentiful supply of hot water from the heating system, pots, pans, plates, cups, saucers etc. We...More

This stone built house has the appearance of being two two-up-two-down cottages knocked into one. As such it is spacious, except for the kitchen which, though well stocked, is quite small. There is an Aga in the dining room if you prefer to cook on...More

About the neighborhood
Our cottage is located in Weardale, which is situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Upper Weardale valley in County Durham is a rugged area of countryside that is relatively unknown. With many similarities to the Yorkshire Dales, the Durham Dales including Weardale and Teesdale have a remote feel, and yet are only 30 miles from Newcastle, Durham, Hadrian's Wall, North Yorkshire and the Lake District.

Weardale is an excellent base for exploring the whole of Northumbria and the north-east of England. In the dale, there is great walking and many villages to explore. The award-winning museums of Killhope lead mining centre and Beamish outdoor museum are both accessible for fantastic days out.
Car not needed
How to get there
Weardale cottage is accessible by public transport or car. It is possible to travel by train as far as Stanhope and then a bus directly to the cottage.

Stanhope is the local market town and is 5 miles from the village of Westgate where Weardale cottage is located.
