About the neighborhood
Kournas is a pretty traditional village 8 km from Georgioupoli and about 4 km from Lake Kournas.
If you are visiting Lake Kournas it is worth driving 15 minutes further along the narrow uphill road to Kournas.
While the lake is 'touristy', Kournas village is completely unaffected by tourism and takes visitors on a journey back in time, as do many villages in the interior of Crete (these words were written in 2009, I hope I won’t need to change them in future…)

How to get there
There are two ways to reach the island of Crete:
BY BOAT: From Piraeus port, daily departures to Souda port of Chania or to the port of Heraklion.
BY PLANE: There are two international airports on the island: in Chania and in Heraklion.
DISTANCES
Chania Airport: 49 km (45 min. drive to Kavros village).
Souda Port of Chania: 23 km (20min. drive to Kavros village).
Heraklion Port or Airport: 100 km (70 min. drive to Kavros village).
From Chania airport or Souda port: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon. Take the highway. Upon reaching Georgioupoli exit, decrease your speed. After 5 km you will reach the tourist village of Kavros. At the first exit turn right and drive for about 300m. At the crossroad continue straight following the signs to Kournas Village and drive for another 1600m and you will reach Stavento Luxury Suite at your left.
From airport or harbour of Heraklion: Follow the signs to the highway in the direction of Rethymnon – Chania. Take the highway. Pass all the exits to Rethymnon and continue, headed in the direction Chania. After the exit to Episkopi, decrease your speed. 4 km later, on your right-hand side, you will see a sign marking the end of Rethymnon prefecture. 2 km later you will reach the tourist village of Kavros. Keep your eyes on your left-hand side. The first exit is at the Petrol Station, don’t turn there but turn very carefully left at the next (second exit) to Kavros there is a huge Super Market at your right. Drive for about 300m. At the crossroad continue straight following the signs to Kournas Village and drive for another 1600m and you will reach Stavento Luxury Suite at your left.
