I loved this place even before we arrived. The lodge was comfy and set in a very quiet and lovely part of the country. Me and my boys enjoyed boating in the pond, fishing and exploring the nearby country lanes by bike. The boys had...More

About the neighborhood
Winkleigh, in the middle of Devon, is ‘proper English countryside’. In summer the fields are full of old fashioned stooks of wheat (now grown for thatching). In autumn there's the renown display at the Sticklepath Fireshow, and nearby Hatherleigh holds its festival, complete with flaming tar barrels. Come winter, there’s wassailing in the orchards and crackling fires. Come spring again and orchids bloom among the hedgerow flowers. Explore the Devon countryside described so beautifully in Tarka the Otter, perhaps by cycling or walking the nearby Tarka Trail. Or visit the town of Torrington, site of the last major battle of the English civil war in the south west. You can experience a re-enactment at Torrington 1646 - complete with musket firing! If that's too dramatic, relax at RHS... more
