The apartment itself was great for our family of four, as we used only the upstairs, including a loft occupied by my son. Wifi, fireplace, TV, videos, well-stocked kitchen, and spectacular views make living easy. Its a 2 minute walk to the tram up to the ski area, and a 1 minute walk from the end of skiing at day's end.
Zinal itself is beautiful with several nice restaurants, lots of old world charm, plenty of families, not busy at all. If you like the glitz of Saint Moritz, I would not come here, but then that just makes it a more pleasant place for the rest of us.
Skiing is spectacular with plenty of off piste options. The best is the run from Zinal to Grimentz. The designated run is pretty fun, but dropping over to the direct line to Grimenz is even better. Also fun is the direct woods shot down to Zinal after skiing is done. Definitely go to Chandolin/Saint Luc for a day.
Only one warning: the tram up to the ski area gets crowded, so best to wake up...
