Coronavirus - we will leave 2 days between guests. This will avoid the need to remove from the cottage all but basic essential items and it will remain well equipped. Obviously, everything will be cleaned thoroughly between guests. Due to social distancing, unfortunately I may not be able to be as helpful as I normally try to be when guests arrive. The Shippon provides self-catering for up to 4 people in a picturesque, converted granite barn that was previously used as a cow shed. The barn itself was built around 300+ years ago. The inside layout is quite spacious. Apart from the family bathroom there is a hand washbasin in the double bedroom plus a shower and washbasin in one of the single rooms. The Shippon is located on the northern edge of Devon's Dartmoor National Park, just outside the market town of Okehampton. Convenient access to A30 but far enough away not to be troubled by road noise inside the cottage. Many of our guests have commented how quiet and peaceful it is here, and they love the fact there is no 'light pollution' from street lights. Children age 7 years and older are welcome. The Shippon is available only for short-term lets of 7 nights maximum. Although there is wifi, we don't have the greatest internet speeds round here. It's not suitable for downloading large files such as films or music or for gaming - if these are important for you when you are holiday, we don't feel The Shippon will be right for you. Here is what guests have said about their stay with us: 'The Shippon is a a great find. The house is cosy and extremely well thought out for travellers. The location is perfect for walking the moors and exploring the area.' 'We really enjoyed our stay. The house is in a great location and is well equipped - good value for money'. ''We would come back again.' More

Great
We had a lovely break here. It was a good base for days out. Shops and good pubs only a short drive away. Some super local walks too. Jackie is a great host and has a friendly dog. The house had everything we needed for our stay.

Clean, fresh, well equipped and ideally situated.
Friendly and helpful owners. Lovely well equipped cottage. It was warm and cosy and very welcoming to come back to after a wet day out! Spacious and characteristic Location excellent for exploring Dartmoor. Plenty to do in the area. The village has an excellent family run village shop and pub. Parking was not a problem. Very good value for money and we would be more than happy to return to The Shippon.

Mr
The cottage was excellent, it had everything you would want. It is in an ideal position for visiting North and South Devon. And so close to Dartmoor. Jackie the host was very nice. Would definitely recommend. I would have no worries recommending this cottage to anybody. Very nice.

Lovely cottage and excellent location
Lovely cottage . Large living room and kitchen and ideal for a family . Excellent location as north and south Devon are within equal driving distances. Good walks from the cottage itself and the Granite Cycle Way is close by. Feels like you are in the middle of nowwhere but there are amenities close by. Jackie and her husband are very pleasant and Harry the dog used to welcome us every morning. Would thoroughly recommend and we had a great holiday here .

Great to hear you enjoyed your stay, Julie. Like you, many guests have left the car here and crossed the road to walk on the moor. As you brought your bikes, you had the advantage of the great Dartmoor scenery along the Granite Way, ending up at the 'unusual' pub for lunch.

Comfortable well fitted cottage
Everything about the property was perfect. Very welcome having milk for a cup of tea on arrival. Jackie and Ralph very helpful and made our stay enjoyable. Weather could have been better but we did go out everyday and avoided getting too wet. Would definitely recommend.

Above Expectations
If you travel a lot, you will encounter a variety of accommodation, some good, some not so; and occasionally a gem. Our stay at the Shippon has been a gem. It is so comfortable and warm and a pleasure to be here in this incredible part of the world. But what makes it a “gem”? Everything actually works which is rare but it is something else; the hostess actually. Jackie our hostess has made that difference. She has gone out of her way to make our stay enjoyable and stress free, an English saint. If we were to return to England, the ‘Shippon’ is an essential revisit.

About the neighborhood
The Shippon is on the northern edge of the beautiful Dartmoor National Park. If you enjoy walking or cycling, there are miles of pathways on the moor for you to explore. Okehampton is the nearest town, about 3 miles away. Here you'll find shops, pubs and restaurants. The moorland village of Belstone is 1 mile away. It has a good pub that serves food, as well as a cute tea room that serves cream teas (not open every day). Directly opposite the entrance to The Shippon is a footpath and bridle path that leads to Belstone, or to the village of Sticklepath, taking you through the picturesque Skaigh Valley.
