Tranquil life in lap of Himalaya
Your location Joshi Cottage Almora Range, Uttarakhand 263628 Lodge nrups s 138 points 11 hours agoJoshi cottages is a family run homestay located within the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. We stayed for 6 days at Joshi Cottage. You have to enter in the sanctuary and drive around 3 km to reach the tracking road leading to Joshi Cottage. Then after around 2 km of walking on trail, you can reach Joshi Cottage. This 2 km hike is beautiful, lush green forest area. Once you reach Joshi Cottage, they welcome you with warmth and love. Its run by Joshi family. Santosh ji was our contact person, he is a great bird watcher and nature guide. Brother of Santoshji, Kewal Joshiji, cooks delicious Kumaoni rural meals to satiate your soul. Best thing for us was to have proper Kumaoni meal everyday with organically grown vegetables fresh picked from their vegetable garden. Kewal ji made sure to make our special day more special by making Gulab Jamin on our wedding anniversary. There are two cottages near the building where Joshi family stays. They both have all basic amenities room, well maintained, clean and keeping in mind the low temperature, this place mostly have. Each cottage has mesmerizing view from all the points. Anywhere you see, you will find valley filled with chir pines. The place is so peaceful, you would like to stay there and just enjoy the nature. This place is heaven for bird watchers and nature lovers. From cottage itself we saw Himalayan woodpeckers, Kaleej pheasant, Indian Cuckoo, Eurasian Cuckoo, Indian Paradise Flycatcher and many more. It felt like heaven when you do not hear any other noise but just chirping of birds, calls of barking deer and wind passing through the valley. Joshi family grows lot many fruits and vegetables around this place, using which they make the meals. That makes simple meals taste heavenly. Overall, it was very peaceful stay with greatest level of hospitality. Nature walks and visit to zero point with Santoshji was great experience. we are definitely coming back. A few tips: 1. Trail walking is required, pack proper hiking shoes. 2. Pack light and preferably in back-pack instead of heavy suitcase. If you ask, Joshiji will arrange for porter at reasonable rate. 3. Santoshji is very knowlegeable nature guide, if you are interested, better to speak with him in advance 4. Carry least plastic, and please bring it back. Do not litter mountains. 5. It is better to book taxi through Santoshji in advance, if you need pick-up from Kathgodam Railway Station. He will do it at very reasonable rate.

Excellent birding experience with Naturalist Santosh Joshi
Thank you Mr. Santosh Joshi for recommending us to stay at Joshi Cottage for birding. It was an amazing experience with nature, birds and to spend some time with such an adorable Joshi family. Food was very delicious. Santosh is an excellent naturalist and guide. He has immense knowledge about the birds, their territories, calls, ID's and ofcourse patience and passion which makes him one of the best naturalist in Binsar. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Joshi Cottage.

Far from the madding crowd
We stayed in Joshi Cottage in October 2022. The 40 minutes walk from the main road (inside Binsar Sanctuary) is a gentle trek through the forest which we enjoyed thoroughly, this nature walk is a precursor to the bountiful views at Joshi Cottage. The cottage has a rustic charm about it, we found ourselves literally in the lap of nature. The view from the cottage is simply breathtaking, bright blue open skies and pine trees. It's an ideal choice for nature lovers. Home cooked food (pure vegetarian) prepared from locally grown vegetables is served. Grandmother and children make meal times an absolute delight. If you are looking for modern amenities (no wifi, no TV but the mobile networks work superbly well), then this is not the place for you. Those in search of peace and tranquility- far from the dust and din of the cities, this is the place. Mr. Santosh Joshi was a great guide to this place, his brother Mr. Keval Joshi looked after us very well, sharing nuggets of information about local areas and culture. The entire Joshi family adds to the wholesome experience at their cottage. Highly recommended!

A wonderful experience with stunning views of Nanda Devi
Joshi’s Cottage homestay is in Dalar Village in the beautiful Binsar Sanctuary. The accommodation is clean simply furnished and comfortable there is hot yes, really hot water. Santhosh and his family are lovely and I was welcomed into their home and invited to experience their way of life. I stayed for 6 nights and each day went on a different walk with Santhosh as a guide. His knowledge of the flora and fauna is exceptional and his love for the area is very apparent, if you are a birder then don’t hesitate to come here, I saw lots of birds and also pine marten, barking deer, mountain goats and wild boar. Santhosh’s brother does the cooking which is vegetarian, mostly home grown, organic and delicious. The whole area is stunningly beautiful and when I visited in October there were clear views of the Himalayas both from the homestay and from higher up at Zero Point.. Santhosh speaks excellent English and some French. He was a great companion on our walks and took extremely good care of me - an older woman! Highly recommended

An extraordinary experience in this gem of a place
I will whole heartedly cherish having experienced the slow paced life in Dalar village for a span of 2 weeks, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where your sole companions are gushing winds and uncountable birds who would never stop talking to you even at the oddest of the hours. My experience at staying with the Joshi's at their homestay was a delight. They were such kind and caring hosts and tried to do their best to make my stay as warm and comforting as possible, not to forget sumptuous local delicacies that the family had served me - most of the ingredients were locally sourced and a lot of them were grown by Joshi's in their own farm, all being completely organic. The location of the cottage was surreal, being situated on the edge of the hill, one could enjoy the panoramic view of surrounding forest and the valleys below, nothing like the enchanting sunsets that I got to witness there just from outside of my cottage. Even the cottage had a slight rustic touch to it which added to the overall experience. I would highly recommend this place if you're looking for an exclusively local Kumaoni experience and especially if you're into bird watching, Santosh ji and his brother aced at their knowledge regarding the birds and at their bird spotting skills and they assited me with the names of numerous bird species which I spotted there. The village also offers numerous trails to surrounding valleys and quaint abandoned cottages for the ones who like to hike (do not worry about getting lost, the villagers are really helpful and do their best to guide you) and if you're lucky you might even spot gorals (Himalayan goats), barking deers, the mighty leopard and a few others. Hopefully, I'll get to relive these experiences and create new ones in Binsar in near future. Ps. I was lucky enough to have spotted all three of the above named animals just from around the homestay area. Also, an important point, you get surprisingly good Jio and vodafone networks in and around the village.

An Unforgettable jungle experience
Set amidst the jungle of Binsar, Santosh ji and his family have created a place that, we felt, have transported us to the most idyllic and enchanting jungle stay. As a host, the family is exceptional, very hard working, very polite and courteous and very very humble. It is surprising to see such hospitality at such places where one has to walk 2 kms from the main road through the dense forest. This family will do anything to make your stay pleasant. I will not be able to say so many thing we have experienced there in 3 days but I will stress the fact that if you want to spend few days in utter seclusion and beauty, do choose Joshi Cottage. The house we stayed had all the modern amenities including geyser and yet maintained the tradition settings of wooden doors and windows, fireplace, stone walls and tables to sit outside. The house is very neat and simply but beautifully decorated. Food is purely homemade, clean, tasty and quanity enough for anyone. As for the jungle around, you can see plenty of birds, hear night-jars and barking deers and if lucky, can spot a leopard. Do respect the locals, keep the junglesclean and enjoy the wildlife around,.. spend time with them, listen to dadi's ( Grandmother's) stories, try out nimbu-sana if you are lucky..They are very good people and we can only expect to return back some goodness as well. Next time when we are at Binsar, you will find us here.

Sunshine and flowers on a green hillside ridge
Hard to leave this blissfully peaceful place, especially on a morning when you awake to birdsong and clear, spectacular view of the Himalayas. I stayed 2 nights and walked through natural and pine forests, sun and shade, past wide green vistas of the local area and stopping for a chat with local women harvesting hay on the hillside. Santosh was my excellent and knowledgeable guide who loves this place, its nature and its way of life. The homestay provides every comfort in a simple way with great local food. Dalar village with its flower gardens and welcoming families is sunny with a cool breeze.

A truly enchanting and soothing experience in the lap of mother nature
We always vacation in a place closer to nature away from the noise and commercial hotelwallahs. We had visited this place a couple years back during a hiking trip in the sanctuary and loved the house family as well as the natural surroundings . And hence during this trip made it a point to stay here for 4 days. Not a single moment we missed the TV or any other so called luxuries we are generally used to. The care and enthusiasm of Kewalji, Santosh and the entire host family has been heart warming. Devoured food made from their own home grown veggies. The 2 storied cottage is clean, simple and spacious enough for us. The air is refreshingly clean and the hikes around are amazing. A bird watcher's paradise. A must have experience. Fell asleep listening to the nature's lullaby 😊

Best of the best
My friends and I stayed in Dalar at the guest house when traveling with villageways. We did visit Santosh's guest cottage and it is fully equipped for a rustic and comfortable stay. We had the privilege to meet the family who were so welcoming and vibrant. All food was delicious. Even spent some time together during Holi celebrations. Santosh was our guide for 5 days and his expertise, observational skills and knowledge of his native area is mind boggling. His charm, humour and kindness helped us through the challenging parts of the hike. We trusted him completely. I would highly recommend Santosh as guide and host. The village experience is humbling and awe inspiring. Thanks for an amazing adventure in your beautiful homeland Santosh.
