Dordogne in the Spring - green!
We had a wonderful visit to Chantalouette in the Spring - I had no idea that the Dordogne could be so beautifully green and lush. Chantalouette is a wonderful base - plenty of space inside and out, and in such a quiet area too. We loved the verandah with its eating area and lovely view of the garden. The neighbours were very friendly. Lovely walks from the house and plenty to do further afield. Chantalouette is an excellent house for family holidays. We will be back with children and grandchildren!

A little piece of heaven!
Spending many a summer at Chantaloutte, I find it to be a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. I love to wake up early and take a jog around the countryside down the back lanes to the village of St. Germaine des Prés soaking up the scenery and the warm summer sun. Chantalouette is situated conveniently close to many French attractions and restaurants. The house is spacious but has a cozy friendly feeling. I particularly love the loft bedroom on the 3rd floor with the oak beamed A frame ceiling (oak beams are a feature throughout the house) and en suite bathroom. The kitchen is large and well equipped. We tend to eat most our meals outside under the terra-cotta roofed terrace. The fixed stone BBQ is a real bonus for the more leisurely afternoon or late night meal. The summer sky at night is so clear you can see zillions of stars, and in August it's fun to watch the meteor showers. I've been to this amazing place in the Spring and Autumn too and find it equally delightful. I shall definitely be back!

A perfect location for a comfortable, relaxing break
We were looking for a comfortable countryside base from which to revisit an area we once lived in. This fitted the bill perfectly. We've stayed in numerous holiday rentals and have to say this was one of the best. It's a lovely roomy farmhouse with an enclosed courtyard and garden and therefore very private. We enjoy walking so the location was ideal as tracks surrounded the property enabling us to explore a variety of superb walks off any main roads. It was extremely quiet with only the sound of crickets, owls and other wildlife to delight rather than disturb us.
The house itself was very well equipped, the kitchen particularly so. Not that we really took much advantage of all the cooking tools and utensils as there were quite a few good restaurants in the vicinity. I liked the fact that each floor had a bath/shower room and WC - and very nice they were too. What we particularly loved was the huge covered terrace overlooking the garden and fields beyond. We spent most of our time here, whether there was sun or rain - and we had both!
The house is close to two market towns, both with cafes, restaurants and supermarkets. We were able to walk to the village to buy bread (about a 15 minute walk). There's lots to see and do in the area and Perigueux, which is a gorgeous town with a mediaeval centre, is an easy drive away.
There's loads of parking space, no noisy neighbours and English TV if that's what you want. We didn't particularly need it but it would be useful if you're bringing children.
It's no good for people with limited mobility as there are three floors, including ground. And all the bedrooms are upstairs. But it's a great family house with big bedrooms and plenty of space. Thoroughly recommended.

Dordogne delight - enjoy a peaceful and relaxing holiday!
What an amazing place! The house is spacious, comfortable & well-equipped with fabulous outdoor areas to suit everyone, the covered terrace with BBQ being our personal favourite. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with plenty of different walks or cycle rides on safe, quiet lanes & tracks. The river is great for a paddle on a hot day too! The nearby villages all have plenty to offer with shops & markets selling fabulous fresh produce. Lots of things to do without having to travel too far to do them - makes for a thoroughly relaxing & enjoyable holiday. Will definitely be returning!!

About the neighborhood
Just walk out of the gates and you're on a track that leads to a plethora of off-road trails, wandering through woods, walnut groves and across fields, and traversing little hamlets – this is an ideal location for walking or off-road cycling. The village of St Germain des Prés, with a bakery/grocery store, is within walking distance. The market town of Excideuil is 5kms away with cafés, restaurants, bank, post office and excellent supermarkets; also a market every Thursday where you can buy all sorts of duck products, cheeses, wines, fresh vegetables and much else. In the other direction is another nearby market town famed for its foie gras, Thiviers, with a bustling market every Saturday. Just beyond Thiviers is one of France's designated 'most beautiful' villages, St Jean de Côle. Golfers can enjoy a round at one of the best and newest courses in the region at the Domaine d'Essendiéras, just outside Excideuil. As well as golf the estate boasts a top-class restaurant and bistro.

A must-see is the recently-discovered Tourtoirac cave system, opened just a couple of years ago. These caves, with some incredible stalactites and stalagmites, have been sensitively and imaginatively developed and offer an unforgettable experience. Don't forget to visit the château at Hautefort, an impressive edifice perched above the pretty village and dominating the skyline for miles around. There are guided tours of the interior and the gardens are also open to the public with great views of the surrounding landscape from its terraces.

For children, just a couple of kilometres away is a tree-top adventure park with all sorts of acrobatic challenges. Thiviers and Excideuil offer excellent swimming in their large outdoor pools. Excideuil also has a pool for very small children.
