Fishing, walking and cycling routes are nearby. Wolsingham is a small market town looking much as it did hundreds of years ago with many stone built listed buildings, period features and links to its long history. In recent years it has become a thriving visitor stopping off point at the base of the Weardale valley. Wolsingham Agricultural Society holds its annual show on the first weekend in September, with a daily attendance of over 30,000. Established in 1763 it is one of the oldest show in the country and brings in animals and visitors from a wide area. Wolsingham is served by the heritage Weardale Railway, whose trains run from Bishop Auckland to Stanhope, including special steam train services, the highlight of the year being the Polar Express at Christmas time. Weardale boasts one of the only outdoor heated swimming pools located 6 miles from the cottage. Kevin/ Eileen will welcome you to Angate Cottage and provide a brief tour of the cottage and facilities. Should you require any assistance throughout your stay, Eileen and Kevin live locally are only too pleased to assist. The oldest houses in Wolsingham are at Whitfield Place on Front Street, there are three cottages, the left-most dated 1677 and with the initials 'DM'. The other properties here have an even longer history. They are said to have been converted from the former Pack Horse Inn where Edward III may have rested on returning from his unfruitful encounter with the Scots in Weardale in April 1327. Another king, Charles II, is said to have ridden his horse up the internal staircase of the house in the 17th century and it still has an impressive staircase today. Easy access to bus routes. Demense picnic area , Wolsingham Park, Waverley river all within 200 metres. Wolsingham boasts a bistro, cafe, bakery, public houses, Italian restaurant and Chinese takeaway. There is also a local Spa, pharamacist, butchers and cash point. Tunstall reservoir/ nature reserve is located in Wolsingham. Nearby attractions include: Killhope - the award winning North of England Lead Mining Museum, which is a unique and unforgettable experience. Killhope is a fully restored nineteenth century Victorian lead mine, where you can experience the life and work of the lead mining families of the Pennine dales; High Force - one of the most spectacular waterfalls in England, located at Forest-in-Teesdale, in the heart of the Durham Dales, Co. Durham.High Force is surrounded by the stunning countryside of Upper Teesdale and is situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A variety of animal and plant life can be seen at High Force throughout the seasons, from a vast array of wildflowers, ferns and towering trees, to roe deer and rabbits. Hamsterley Forest - 2000 hectares of mixed woodland lying between the Wear and Tees valleys on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hamsterley is a delightful oasis of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, sprawling along the sides of a sheltered valley. Visitors to Hamsterley have no shortage of options when it comes to activities. With waymarked walks, bike hire, cycle routes and horse riding trails, all levels of fitness and ability are catered for. Cycle hire is available on site. Hamsterley Forest is one of the Northeast's premier mountain bike destinations, with over 2000 hectares of forest to explore on 33 miles of waymarked trails and countless more miles of seldom travelled forest road. Other Things to Note Smoke alarms fitted throughout. Fire extinguisher and fire blanket located in kitchen. Digital carbon monoxide detector in situ.
