We stayed here the first weekend in December. When we arrived there was a prepared hamper with everything we needed to get us started, a lovely touch. The cottage itself is furnished to a high quality and laid out so well. It has all the...More

About the neighborhood
As the former 'slate capital of Wales' Blaenau Ffestiniog has a strange, compelling beauty. Screes of broken slate tumble down steep-sided mountains, mixing with Snowdonia's natural grandeur. Glimpse into Blaenau's unique history at the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, one of Wales's most successful tourist attractions. Make a day of it and travel here by the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog. Bring your bike/s – a new lakeside cycle trail along Tanygrisiau Lake and a specialist mountain biking downhill route at Llechwedd, opened in 2012. Recent town centre improvements have revitalised the shopping area and Britain's first pedal-powered velorail attraction, connecting Blaenau Ffestiniog with Trawsfynydd, opens soon. Nearby is the charming Italianate village o... more

How to get there
From London (approx. 250 miles, allow 5 hours):

1. Take your best route to M25
2. M25 at J16 take the M40 (north, towards Birmingham and Oxford) and stay on it until it joins the M42
3. When you reach M42 you can go in either direction (west or east), my preference is to go west to the M5 (going around Birmingham from the south), but you can also take the M42 east (and go around Birmingham from the north).
4. If you take M42 west, when you reach the M5 take the north direction, towards M6 which you will join (northbound) after about 12 miles; if you take M42 east, when you join the M6 take the north-westerly direction.
5. Follow the M6 until you reach junction 10A and then take the exit for M54
6. Take the M54 to the end, where it becomes A5.
7. Follow the A5 past Shrewsbury towards Oswes...
