Whether you are outdoor enthusiasts, a family looking to escape or tourists looking to explore and soak up Scotland's grandeur, Casfuar Cottage will tick your box. An historic highland croft set in a private elevated position and uniquely positioned for easy access to Deeside, Donside and Speyside, Casfuar Cottage is a peaceful, comfortable and spacious retreat from the bustle of daily life. The traditional rustic exterior blends into its hillside position whilst the fresh and light renovated interior offers a modern space in which to absorb the surrounding peacefulness. Designed to accommodate 4 guests the cottage boasts an upgraded, sociable kitchen-dining space off which lies the cosy living room with its log-burner and stunning panoramic views. There is also a sizeable 'boot room' area for drying and storage of all your outdoor gear/bikes/skis. The downstairs family bathroom includes a shower/bath combination whilst the upstairs shower room provides facilities close to the sleeping quarters, made up of a sizeable master bedroom and a large twin room that has space for additional sleeping should it be required. The outside grounds offer plenty space to roam and absorb the surroundings whilst not pretending to be anything other than a natural Scottish hillside. Casfuar Cottage is less than 10 minutes drive from the village of Tomintoul, one of the highest villages in Scotland, with its rustic country pubs, charming shops, a post office & village shop, restaurant, museum, reputable malt whisky shop and an excellent visitor centre. For outdoor enthusiasts the cottage offers the perfect base to access high level hikes afforded by the Cairngorms Massif and lower level walks in the hills around Tomintoul, notably on the Crown Estate's numerous way-marked paths (including the Glenlivet Estate), the Ladder Hills, the Hills of Cromdale and the Spey Way which has a spur running in/out of Tomintoul. The Lecht Ski Centre is a quick drive up the glen for those wanting to enjoy its winter sports offerings. And mountain bikers won't be disappointed either as the Glenlivet Estate's purpose built trails are a short drive away too. Families looking to entertain the kids after the family friendly outdoor activities on the doorstep have been exhausted can easily day trip to the Spey Valley, visiting Aviemore to enjoy all it has to offer as well as the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park in Kingussie and the Landmark Centre in Carrbridge. And for tourists looking for a taste of Highland Scotland, the cottage is uniquely situated just off the beautiful 'rollercoaster' Snow Roads scenic route, allowing for access to Royal Deeside, Donside and Speyside, and all the castles, golf courses and history they serve up, in 30 minutes or less. And not forgetting being on the doorstep of the infamous Malt Whisky Trail, the North Coast 500 trail you couldn't ask for a better location. 4x4 and experienced driver is required if it rains or snows, STAY AWAY.
Overall the cottage itself is comfortable and has nice views. However, the dishwasher was filthy and mouldy inside, and would not start. The contact details in the booklet had been removed and the details in the email that was sent no longer dealt with the cottage. Found the owners details in the email and he said it need to be replaced which he would organise for a couple of days later and he would contact John (new caretaker). Next morning (about 7am), could not get the car out of the drive an onto the track to get to the main road due to a light snow. The drive was too steep. As the more snow was forecast we called the AA. It took so long as the main road (Old Military Road) had been closed and finally he got to us in his 4x4 about 8pm and recommended that we leave as more snow was forecasted and he would not be able to get in. So we packed our car to leave after 1 night (not 4). After about an hour he was able to get our car winched onto the track and tried to turnaround in the drive, but due to steepness he got stuck as well, and had to winch himself out as well. So after 90 minutes we were both on the Old Military Road, luckily down hill all the way and he recommended we not come back. We agree with the recovery person that this cottage should be listed as requiring 4x4 vehicle only, with experienced drivers as the steepness will defeat most average drives in 4x4s especially with the rain or snow. Contacted the owner when we finally got out and into a hotel in Aviemore, but no reply as he obviously doesn't care about his guests.

Geweldig afgelegen luxe huis

Great cottage in remote location
Great cottage in a wonderful remote location, lots of wildlife. We had snow, frost and sunshine. The hot tub was a great addition, watching the star and ever changing skyes was amazing. The only negative, was that the dishwasher did not work and there was no washing up liquid provided, but apart from that would definitely recommend and hopefully be back.

Excellent and clean cottage in a stunning location with fantastic views
CASFUAR Cottage really is the ideal base from which one can explore the Highlands and surrounding regions. The cottage itself is very clean and fully equipped to ensure that your stay is relaxed and comfortable. The location is absolutely first class - few cottages (if any!) will be able to rival CASFUAR for the views, the serenity, the peace, the quiet, the tranquillity, the ambience, the level of comfort and the charm. As other reviews have mentioned, access to the cottage is "off the beaten track" which adds to its charm. As a family we thoroughly enjoyed our time at CASFUAR. There is so much to do in the Highlands and surrounding regions. We found CASFUAR ideally located as a base from which to visit the whole of Aberdeenshire and Inverness including the magnificent Plodda Falls. The hot tub provided the perfect way to wind down at the end of the day. Matthew, the owner, is excellent with communication. We book many a cottage / villa break and few owners can compete in terms of response rate and attention to detail with Matthew. Kudos Matthew! We look forward to a return stay at CASFUAR.

Fantastic
What a fantastic cottage in a fabulous location. Everything you may need is there for you, including electric blankets! The hot tub was lovely and the views amazing. Just a word of caution-aim to arrive in daylight as at night you will have difficulty finding track and navigating it. Also if weather is wet you will almost certainly need a 4x4 to get up the track. Other nice touches were the ability to watch Netflix and Amazon Prime etc. Will definitely be returning.

Fantastic Cottage
My wife and I had a brilliant time at Casfuar Cottage. The cottage itself has been beautifully renovated and tastefully decorated and furnished throughout. Great attention has been paid to the finer details with lovely pictures on the wall, stylish soft furnishings and some fresh flowers were on the dining table in the kitchen. The cottage was spotlessly clean and has everything you will require for yor stay. You are totally isolated here with only the cows. sheep and deer as neighbours. It is a fantastic place to switch off and totally relax, which we did. The hot tub was the highlight though. It is a great place to chill and ease those aching muscles after a day of walking in the hills, whilst also being able to take in the stunning views which surround you. Matthew was very helpful and replied promptly to our e-mails. We requested some assistance in relation to our arrival time, which was kindly arranged by him. I would highly recommend Casfuar Cottage to all. We will definitely be back (hopefully soon!!!).

How to get there
Casfuar Cottage is located in the Cairngorm National Park, a 5 minute drive outside Tomintoul, one of the highest villages in Scotland. It is approximately a 1 hr 30 minute drive from Aberdeen, just over an hour driving from Inverness, and roughly 3 hours from both Glasgow and Edinburgh on a combination of motorways and the A9. It is a remote area so a car is required. The cottage is approximately 5-7 mins drive along a quiet private forest/farm track which is uneven in places. We are the only cottage in this wonderful peaceful location.
