We had a wonderful experience at Star Brite Cottage and Salt Cay. Cynthia was the consummate host. The cottage was rustic and unique. There were reminders throughout of the history of the 100 year old cottage—doors and windows (painted a lively red) that you hooked to open and let in the warm ocean breezes, thick stone walls, original wood on the ceiling and floor boards, a broom used by the first owner. There also was a kitchen with all the supplies you need for cooking, two bathrooms, and a living room area. There is an observation whale deck where you can watch for whales, enjoy sunsets, and sit in the sun. The cottage is not fancy, but when you leave, you remember its uniqueness, unlike hotels that tend to blend together over time. Salt Cay is a one of a kind Caribbean island experience. When you arrive (we flew in from Provo but you also can take a ferry from Grand Turk), you feel the difference immediately. Dirt roads, salt flats, old buildings, golf carts on the roads, and a small community of people who are very friendly and accommodating. Cynthia met us at the airport and gave us a tour of the area, giving us a glimpse of its unique history. We stopped at Miss Nettie’s place and bought some homemade bread. Cynthia also was very communicative prior to our arrival and went grocery shopping for us in Grand Turk. It was nice to have our own foods since there is only one restaurant and a small store with limited items available. We did eat at the restaurant, The Coral Reef, and met some lovely people from different parts of the US and Wales. Our one disappointment was that we booked a whale watch excursion, but there were high winds during our stay which made the waves too strong to go. However, we were reimbursed and found other ways to enjoy our time. We hung out several days at North Bay beach, a pristine, remote, gorgeous beach that we had completely to ourselves. We also found other hidden gem beaches and enjoyed seeing the donkeys, cows, and chickens which roamed the island (one even stuck his head in our opened window!). We can’t say enough about Cynthia. She was gracious, helpful, responsive and friendly. If you are looking for a different kind of Caribbean experience, Salt Cay and Star Brite will reward you with lasting memories.
