About the neighborhood
The cottage sits on the route of the Westhouse Walks and is close to the famous Ingleton Waterfalls. There is a strong Sir Arthur Conan Doyle connection in the area.
Conan Doyle's mother lived in nearby Masongill. He attended Stonyhurst College (approx 1 hr drive away). Arthur married his first wife, Louisa Hawkins, at St Oswald's Church, Thornton in Lonsdale, (where a copy of his marriage certificate can be viewed) just a mile from Penny Black and it is thought that his Sherlock Holmes character was developed in the Ingleton area with a number of clues to be discovered by would be detectives. You can visit Uncle Jeremy's Household store in Ingleton, where Martyn will happily tell you all about Arthur’s connection with Ingleton.
Getting around
Ingleton village offers individual shops, dog friendly country pubs, a variety of eating establishments and wonderful tea rooms. There are many Churches of various denominations in the area.
The nearest shop to Penny is 0.9 miles towards Ingleton. It is a 'corner shop' with a difference and is called Country Harvest. Here you can buy local produce including wonderful meats and groceries, clothing, gifts and they have a super café.
Our local pub is the newly refurbished Marton Arms who serve tasty, well presented evening meals, offer fine traditional hand pulled cask ales and have over 35 gins on offer. The Marton Arms is in the hamlet of Thornton in Lonsdale (1 mile away)
