A wide variety of plants and trees can be found in the garden including almond trees, fig trees and olive trees making it a paradise for birds. The surrounding parkland area offers a huge selection of foot paths to explore the neighbouring wildlife which start from the garden. Like the writer 'Kees Bakker' wonderfully wrote in his book about Andalucia; Sierra de Aracena together with Picos de Aroche is an area of special interest greatly visited by many people. Small villages lie within a stone throws distance of each other and many foot paths lead into the mountains. The original map of Sierra de Aracena was established in the 13th century when Castilië took it upon himself to create it following the battle against Portugal. However, the history of the people in this area goes way back. Since Paleolithicu, a few ten thousand years ago, people have played a part in this area. In search of shelter, people turned caves and caverns into homes. Forests were turned to agriculture and fresh water sources were established. Thanks to the hard working generations of that time, Sierra became a habitable place. The lively town of Aracena is located a 5 minute drive from the house. Aracena has a population of 8000 and a substantial number of attractions such as a castle, caverns with underground lakes and many limestone formations. There are also plenty of restaurants, grocery stores and tapas bars to be found. Around ten o'clock at night during the summer the 'paseo' takes place. This is the chance to meet other people and for children to meet up. Even though the house lies in the heart of Sierra, it is very easily accessible. Andalusia has good roads, and at sixty miles the Costa de la Luz can be found together with its broad white beaches. At just forty miles lies the Portuguese border. The beautiful city of Seville can also be visited at about an hour's drive. This area of Spain is particularly well known for a huge number of things. A cured ham 'pata negra', a variety of edible mushrooms, cork oaks, holm oaks and its famous local recipes are just to name a few. The locals are, like the other areas, very friendly and welcoming.
