We'd stay again
We stayed 5 nights in June-July 2016 with our two teenage girls. Yosemite is an absolute paradise and the walking was out of this world. Hans Basecamp is a good location, right at the base of the Glacier Point Road, and about 20 minutes from the Valley. The house has a very “lived-in” feel; it’s not deluxe but it is comfortable though some of the furniture and furnishings are probably ready for renewal. It sleeps 6 very comfortably. Excellent kitchen and barbeque with everything well equipped. Wifi is not brilliant but we were forewarned of that in the information pack. If you’re driving in for a few days, stock up well at a good supermarket (not in Lee Vining where prices seemed double) and make sure you fill up with gas, either at Wawona or at the Crane Flat Station (where the Valley Road ie the Big Oak Flat Road meets the 120 Tioga Road).

Great location
We enjoyed our stay at Hans basecamp. Great location- very convenient to the parks. Kitchen was well stocked with necessities. I do feel like the house could have been much cleaner.

Cosy Mountain retreat
Hans' was an amazing base for our trip to Yosemite and a cosy retreat from the snow, hail, rain and sun the mountains threw at us! Hans' feels like your own mountain home, previous guests have left treats, the shelves are full of interesting books and the rooms are very comfortable. It's not up to date modern, but rather more "worn in" for me, that added to the charm. We ranged from 5-9 people staying here at once (with 9 we had to get out the airbed but it's one of the electric pump ones and very comfortable). The cooking equipment was plentiful and adequate for the number and there were loads of spare towels. West Yosemite is not super central - it's close to the Glacier point turn off, but you have to go to the valley for provisions and either Wawona or Crane Flat for gas. Hans was friendly and helpful when booking by email. You couldn't get to Hans' without a car. I would definitely recommend Hans' and would stay here again.

Everything is fully functional, reliable and easy to use.
It was a very pleasant stay of 3 nights. We had a group of 6, which fit into the 3 bedrooms very well. The lower story has one bedroom with a queen bed and a twin bunk-bed(sleeps 2). Upper story has 2 bedrooms. each has a queen beds. If the 2 leather couches in the family room are counted, it certainly can host 10 people. But I figure 8 people is the best fit. The full kitchen is nice. It basically has everything -- a full size cooktop-microwave with vent hood, 4-burner range with oven, super large single door fridge, counter top toaster, can opener, ample supply of cups, plates, silvers, wine and beer bottle openers, trash bags, paper towel, ..... you name it. There lower level is covered by hardwood floor. It is suggested to have shoes taken off. As a result the house is very clean. There is a telephone provided. (cell phone signal is zero bar). Wireless signal within the house is strong. But the internet connecting to the outside world is slow. TV is an antique but functional with DVD player and VCR. There are quite a lot movie tapes and DVDs. The book shelf is fun to explore as Hans has a wonderful collection of rock climbing, which are rare to find in a book store. Trash is a problem: We generated 4 bags of trashes. Because of bear awareness, there is no trash dump in the neighborhood. We have to take the 4 bags with us and dump them in trash dumps in the valley. For example, there are 6 of them in a spot called "tunnel view". Bath: all bathroom are clean and tidy. There are ample supply of towels in the cabinet. lower level bathroom is newly furnished . Beds: the mattress in the upper lever bedroom facing the front is not so great. A firmer and less shaky mattress will do a better justice to the house. There are quite a few pillows provided in the shelf with difference heights. Neighborhood: we saw 3 bears walking across the street on the first morning around 7AM. Second day we were lucky enough to see a coyote. very quite neighborhood with lots of vacation houses along a winding road. We definitely had a wonderful time. and would like to recommend this house to our friends.

Amazing location, declining amenities
This was our second year staying in this house. Hans has always been great to work with, responsive and helpful. We would still be sitting in the dark in the living room if he hadn't tipped us off to the obscure location of the light switch. Yosemite West is wonderful, and we appreciate the laid back atmosphere of the house. However, I felt like the house wasn't in very good condition - more broken items than last year. The screen door to the beautiful deck was missing, letting in lots of bugs or making the living room stuffy, and several other windows didn't move very well. Some kitchen cabinet doors were very grimy and if you care about things like clean sponges, non-ancient pillows, or lids for your pans, you're out of luck. We did our part to improve things for future guests, sharpening knives and buying a new sponge and tinfoil down in Yosemite Valley but lots of things you can't get nearby, and shouldn't be the responsibility of guests. I would NOT recommend this house for small children, given issues like an exposed outlet (no coverplate) in LR for the past 2 years, and easy splinters from the upstairs walls. We did have a young infant with us last year with no problems, but now that he's mobile it would not have been safe. The upstairs bathroom is falling apart, though the downstairs one is great. This house is all about location, and it has its own charm. However, we expected these basic items to be taken care of.

I have forwarded these comments to the caretakers so they can address. Thanks for pointing out things that should be easy for us to fix, add, and or clean.

About the neighborhood
Hans's Basecamp is in the heart of Yosemite National park. - eight miles from the scenic Rostrum overlook and Badger Pass ski resort, eleven miles from the Wawona Tunnel overlook, thirteen miles to El Capitan Meadow, twenty two miles from the Mariposa Giant Sequoia Grove, 14 miles from the Wawona stables, restaurant, and golf course. I should emphasize that my home is in Yosemite West. This is a little neighborhood that is INSIDE the park boundaries. There are a number of rentals in my neighborhood, but there are many rentals that are OUTSIDE the park which are listed as 'Yosemite.' This is OK, but be aware that outside the park means a longer drive to get to the places within the park. My neighborhood is centrally located in the park and it's 25 minutes to get to any of the attractions, but it is in the middle of them.(15 to Badger Pass, 25 to Wawona golf course, 25 to Yosemite Valley water falls, 25 minutes to Glacier Point overlook, and 30 minutes to the Giant Sequoia Mariposa Grove.) If you are staying at the very closest location outside the south entrance to the park you would be 10 to 20 minutes from the Sequoia Grove, but about an hour or more from Yosemite Valley and the water falls and major sites of the steeped walled central area.
Getting around
Taking vehicle to Valley floor then biking, hiking, or busing around is a good call. It's tough to bike or walk to anywhere from the home. there is a bus stop at the top of the neighborhood where Glacier Point road Ts off from HWY 41.
