Just 3 minutes to one of the best beaches in Sardinia, to the nearest bar and great seafood restaurant recently featured by Rick Stein in his BBC series. 5 minutes further on is the harbour village of Buggerru. The area has numerous quality restaurants which are an easy five or ten minute drive from the house and none of which is expensive. Great places to watch the beautiful sunsets over the sea enjoyed on the western side of the island whilst enjoying the very best in Italian and Sardinian food. Great places to watch the beautiful sunsets over the sea enjoyed on the western side of the island whilst enjoying the very best in Italian and Sardinian food. The tourist information site has details of restaurants and some great photography. This coastal location just below the Costa Verde really is one of the best spots on the island close to some of the finest and yet least crowded beaches, such as the closest at Portixeddu, a fantastic 3km long sandy beach, Scivu, Picinas and Cala Domestica. Scivu has the largest sand dunes in Europe. Cala Domestica, by contrast, has a sandy beach surrounded by rocky cliffs, a sheltered bay and fantastic snorkelling. As you can see from the photographs, there are no high-rise buildings, in fact recent changes in the law now prevents building within 3km of the sea. The UNESCO listed area of Sulcis Iglesiente is surrounded by mountains, a great location for trekking, mountain or road biking especially the cooler months and is close to the Temple of Antas (Tempio di Antas) and other historical sites. There are several established rock climbing venues in this area, and the European surfing championships are often held there. It is a great area for wind surfing. There are opportunities for horse/donkey trekking including a popular full day trip across the hills to Scivu beach. Great snorkelling in lovely rocky bays and some excellent sea fishing within five minutes drive. Plenty of space around you for games on the beaches, even in August, makes a refreshing change from other parts of Europe. Set back just a few minutes from the beach down a little used country road (ideal for cycling safely to the beach with children) this recently constructed villa has all modern furniture and conveniences and is set in very private grounds. The setting is idyllic, to breakfast on the balcony is a lovely experience in itself with fantastic views and total quiet. The large barbecue/oven, the tranquil picturesque setting and lovely dining area on the balcony combine to make for lovely evenings at the house after a hard day at the beach! The large natural grounds offer children the chance to explore and for imaginative play in safety. The new outdoor hot and cold shower is handy for both kids and sunbathers to cool down. We now have fast internet and wifi available inside and outside along with Netflix. In the grounds of the villa that are mostly wild, it is possible to see and hear some interesting animal species, for example we have 'singing' nightjars and calling scops owls which can be heard from the balcony at night. You may see colourful Bee-eaters and because the grounds are wooded, guests can enjoy the evening song of 'tree frogs' This Easter (2014) we were lucky to see a Hoopoe in the garden. Hopefully it will be there when we go back. It is occasionally possible for guest parties and friends (max 10) to hire and enjoy a beautiful skippered Predator 7m RIB for diving, snorkelling , fishing, general bayhopping, swimming in beautiful locations and trips to cosmopolitan Carloforte (a great lunch stop). Adventurous adults and children alike are able to try our kneeboards, wakeboards and skis, in beautiful surroundings. The Predator 660 Rib can be seen in the foreground of the Carloforte photo, it offers a fantastic opportunity to see and experience the islands coastline and otherwise inaccessible bays from the sea. The boat is a super safe 'Category B' craft capable of handling almost any sea conditions. Recent guests used the boat for birdwatching. We visited Carloforte to see the rare Eleonora Falcons nesting there. Please enquire for full details and availability during your stay at the time of booking. The villa is situated in a lovely part of the island, with the very best in scenery and beaches but without the expensive day to day living costs that you may find in other parts of the island. We know the area well and have left some very useful area tips in a visitors book and this has been added to by our various guests. With tips ranging from where to find the local spring to refill your water bottles, to the whereabouts of the butcher who sells the best sardinian sausage!, we hope it helps to get you settled in and your holiday started in the area. There are also English books and DVD's to entertain guests and a very rare item in Italy - an electric kettle!. Should you wish to have a chat about the area or the villa please contact us (after 4pm on weekdays, anytime at weekends) Thank you for your interest.More

An Idyllic Rustic Italian Retreat!
Nestled in the foothills Fluminimaggiore, Villa L’Orto is the epitome of rustic Italian escapism. In close proximity to the stunning beach of Portixeddu this villa provides the ideal retreat for those desiring the perfect beach and country escape. The villa itself is situated a short drive from the unspoilt village of Portixeddu…situated by the incredible beach this place is home to a collection of authentic eateries which boast the freshest and most wonderful foods. Our personal favourite was L’Ancara where the food was simply sublime. The villa comes equipped with bikes so you can leave the car at home, cycle to the beach and soak up the Italian culture as you engage in a long lunch, Italian wine and then a siesta on the beach. Back the to the villa itself….what a wonderful and spectacular place…you drive down tree lined lane and then suddenly it emerges from the rural countryside…a traditional villa which boasts character and charm from the minute you arrive. My favourite part was the long terrace which stretches along the entire first floor which provides you with the most magnificent views. As a keen runner I would go out for my morning run along the country lanes before returning to take in the morning air with a coffee and birdsong for company. In the evening we would sit with a gin and tonic…watching the sun begin to fade and the enjoying the cooler evening air. Sadly our time there was only short so we did not have the opportunity of making an evening meal there…something that we have already said we will do when we return. On a practical note the villa has everything you need to be fully self-sufficient…there is an outside area that is home to a large BBQ…and there is even an outside shower for those who wish to fully embrace the elements! The villa was absolutely spotless when we arrived and the cupboards are full of towels and linen for all the guests to utilise…perfect for those who wish to take advantage of a hand luggage only flight. We were lucky enough to enjoy a period of intense Sardinian sunshine and it was extremely hot. Yet the villa has been designed perfectly for this….with air conditioning and large windows and doors which can provide a perfectly natural breeze. For those visiting in the cooler months there is a wood burner and I can imagine how cosy the place must be when winter begins to arrive. Our whole experience of Villa L’Orto was perfect from start to finish. We did not want to leave and are already planning when we can come back. Our hosts were fantastic and on hand for any concerns we may have had and more importantly they have local connections who are there for any further support you could need. Thank you for a wonderful time….this villa is such a beautiful and secluded place which is perfect for a time of relaxation, calm and reflection. We spent our first anniversary here and it was a delightful romantic retreat. Yet we could easily see how it would be ideal for families and groups of friends. With two double bedrooms and a pull out bed in the lounge area it flexible when it comes to accommodating more than just a couple. It is the ideal place for anyone who wishes to escape and embrace the authentic Italian lifestyle. PS….It does have Wi-Fi….so you can post pictures of this incredible place on Facebook and spread the word of how beautiful it is.

The Ultimate Chill Out Holiday
When we arrived at Villa L'Orto we were unwell and very tired. As soon as we stepped out onto the lovely verandah and looked at the view we felt better. The scenery is wonderful, it's peaceful and just what we needed. The villa is well kitted out catering for all needs. The information sheet is useful and gives you a quick start to getting to know the area. After initial reservations we became big fans of the outside shower - wonderful As it was the end of the season many restaurants were closed but we became very fond of the L'Ancora where they make lovely cappuccino and excellent seafood. The beach was often deserted and it felt like our very own private beach. If you want a complete chill out holiday, as we did, and happy to read, do sudokus and crosswords then you will be very happy here. Equally there is plenty to see and do if you want.

Great villa in an amazing location
We have just returned from our holiday in Sardinia. We stayed in Villa L'Orto 2 years ago and loved it so much we returned this year. The villa is fantastic, very well equipped, our children loved the selection of games and dvd's. The best part of the villa is without a doubt the terrace with panoramic views. The nearest beach in Portixedu [5 min by car] is wonderful, def one of the best on the island. And it is never crowded. The local restaurants again a brilliant although there are not that many of them. We eat at the restaurant in Portixedu overlooking the beach {the one Rick Stein visited}, the pizza Bora Bora on the hill is brilliant in the evening and if you visit The caves at Su Manau you must have lunch or dinner at Ostello Su Manau. The owner/chef speaks good english and his food is just delicious. Also the setting is lovely, manicured garden and lovely mountain views. The owners are very helpful and friendly.

A perfect trip...
The apartment - Clean, modern, very well-equipped, surrounded by nature but only 10 minutes drive to 2 lovely towns, quiet and secluded. We all slept really well as the beds were comfy and there was air conditioning. Cooking was easy as there was a modern well equipped kitchen and a brilliant barbeque! The area - Probably the nicest part of Sardegna - although I am reluctant to say that as what makes it so special is that there are hardly any tourists...! The local people - Very friendly, kind and helpful The beaches - Spoilt for choice really.. they are in my opinion the best beaches in the world. The landscape is equally as beautiful to any beach in the Caribbean, but you have the added benefit of no sharks and no risk of getting mugged. The water is obviously cooler and there are less tropical fish but its 2 hours flight from the UK... you can't have it all! I have unfortunately forgotten the names to my favourite beaches - but you should explore for yourself... the furthest ones we travelled to were about 1hrs drive north and 1hr south of the villa. The owners - Helpful, friendly and polite. In summary - If you wish to visit the nicest part of Sardegna and you want to stay in a clean, modern apartment then you won't regret staying at this villa.

A great villa, scenery, place and holiday!
I spent two weeks at Villa L'Orto in August this year with a group of friends. The villa itself was top quality with all modern fittings and fixtures that exceeded my expectations. The outside shower was a personnel favourite... I can't think of a better backdrop to admire whilst having a wash! The villa is situated on the mountainside, a prime spot for admiring the surrounding hills. Surprisingly you get the best of both worlds with the scenic views and yet the beach is only a 15 minute walk from the villa. The beach itself in Portixeddu is great as you can probably tell from the pictures and is backed up by some great Italian food!. All in all a great holiday which I'd highly recommend!

A wonderful place for people how like a quiet and natural setting
The villa is quite new (2009) and well equiped, especially the kitchen. Though there is a tv with many movies and a console with a lot of games, there are no tv channels. Having breakfast and dinner on the balcony with a view on the surrounding farmland and hills is great. The garden is full of live with many butterflies, tree frogs, even some (harmless) snakes and a variety of bird species. There are several nice beaches within half an hour's drive. Touristic attractions like the island of Sant'Antioco and the Piscinas Dunes are also reachable, though you should plan a daytrip for this. We had a great stay and can recommend the villa to anyone who would like to enjoy authentic Sardinia.

Mediteranian Paradise
The house was 5 minutes drive from the main beach which was an amazing beach, not very crowed and surrounded by mountains. The house itself was very beautiful with a modern kitchen and big garden space where you could grill meat or fish on a big barbecue and have meals on the spacious veranda which had a wonderful view. It was a very quiet and peaceful place to stay, in the middle of the countryside but 10 minutes drive to two small towns. The house was complete with all the necessary services which included 5 bikes and information about places to see and the best restaurants in the area. We really enjoyed ourselves there so I would definately recomend it to anyone looking for the REAL taste of the mediteranian.

Wonderfully quiet, scenic location not far from the beach.
My family and I really enjoyed our stay in Villa l’Orto. It had all the creature comforts you would expect and more. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the lounge had a large TV, audio equipment and a games consol for the children with a good selection of games. There was even a wood burning stove for our use and logs supplied (not that we needed it in mid September) but the logs came in handy for the traditional brick built BBQ which was fantastic. The veranda was huge and had fantastic views over the surrounding countryside and nearby mountains. We also had use of a range of mountain bikes which were great for peddling down to the beach.

Thanks very much for your kind comments. Through our own experiences there we try to leave the items guests will need during their stay, especially keeping in mind that many travel light using the economy airlines with hand luggage only. So glad you enjoyed your stay, we hope to see you again soon, thanks again.

About the neighborhood
Portixeddu is a charming beach village, the main attraction is the huge stretch of sand, which is never too crowded. Buggerru ia a lovely harbour village with a history in the mining of granite. The old mines tours offer a glimpse into that history along with a chance to cool down!! Fluminimaggiore a five to ten minute drive from the villa is a village where there are many traditional festivals, as is Iglesias which is the nearest larger town. Cagliari the island capital is just over 1hrs drive away and offers all the sophistication of a major Italian city, along with the fashionable nearby Poetto beach. Local activities include snorkelling, fishing, trekking and rock climbing. The area is popular with cyclists who use the challenging roads (very good road surfaces) in and out of the valley for serious training. It is a favoured location for serious cyclists including professional teams for winter training. Off road cycling is also a major pursuit in the area, and motorcyclists and Enduro enthusiasts flock to the area. See mountain biking images at http://www.sardinianatour.com/EN/152-activ-holidays-pula-cagliari-sardegna.html. Windsurfing and surfing are popular at Portixeddu and the European surfing championships have been held in the area. For some superb photography of the coastline see http://www.gentedisardegna.it/pop_printer_friendly.asp?TOPIC_ID=5336 Eating out is very affordable as this area is not expensive like other parts of the island. Agriturismo's in the area offer high quality traditional home made and home produced fayre, evenings there are often very memorable. There is an excellent fish restaurant and Pizzeria in Portixeddu, both with fantastic bay views. Portixeddu is a 20 minute walk from the villa. A little closer is the Hotel Il Golfo Leone, which is also a restaurant and Pizzeria. A new Pizzeria on the nearby main road is also in easy walking distance. The highly recommended Agriturismo Biologico Fighezia is also close by. Book a couple of days in advance (they have an English speaking partner there) and you will enjoy a feast and an evening to remember for around 20 Euros a head, when all food and wine is home made and included in the price. There are numerous other restaurants in Fluminimaggiore and Buggerru, both a ten minute drive away. Just 1km away and highly recommended by us and recent guests is Trattoria Sole della Luna located in easy walking distance halfway between the beach and our house. The owner Luca's local red wine is also the best in the valley and included in the incredibly low price of 22.5€. The restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner, and is closed Sunday and Monday. Throughout the summer months, Buggerru, Fluminimaggiore and Portixeddu offer night-life, small concerts, traditional festivals and plenty of entertainment. See http://www.fluminimaggiore.org/eventi-e-manifestazioni.html for more info and some great pics of the area. The following link lists all the local folk festivals by date in English. http://www.sardegna.com/code/feste_popolari_int/subregion/3/LINGUA/EN. The following link has some detailed descriptions of Fluminimaggiore, some of the local attractions and areas of historical interest and in particular information about Iglesias, the nearest larger town with 100 churches!!! http://www.tomysardinia.com/filen/501.htm. Outside summer like many areas of Sardinia, this location is very quiet and will appeal to those who wish to get away from it all.

How to get there
Economy Flights from Ryanair are available from £10 each way inclusive of taxes into Alghero from Stansted and Dublin. These are year round. Alghero is a 3hr drive to the villa. Ryanair and Easyjet fly direct from London (Luton and Stansted) to Cagliari the closest airport just over an hours drive away (flying time is c.2hrs20mins). In the summer months flights are daily - in autumn and winter they are three times a week from Luton www.easyjet.co.uk. Easyjet also have a service between Gatwick or Bristol to Olbia flying four days per week between May and October, Olbia being about 3hrs away by car. Jet2 have a Saturday service to Olbia from Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh between mid-may and late September. Alitalia operate between London and Cagliari and very reasonable flights can be found with them. Meridiana have just announced several flights weekly from Gatwick to Cagliari for the summer 2014. We also recommend that from other locations, the northwest for example, that guests use Skyscanner to research two flights to Alghero or Cagliari, it is often possible to find return flights from Liverpool, Manchester and other UK airports via other European cities to Cagliari for as little as £30 return. Skyscanner does the research work for you!!. Car hire is essential in Sardinia and costs about £180 per week. It is worth shopping around although often linked companies from the airlines offer good deals. Easyterra is another good site for sourcing carhire. By Ferry from Genoa (Genova), Livorno, Piombino to Porto Torres or Olbia, Mobylines and Tirrenia offer the most competitive prices, but other companies include Grandi Navi Veloci and SNCM from France.
