We looked far and wide to locate a vacation rental around Custer, SD for a week for our extended family of 2 couples, two single women, a 2 year old and someone in a wheelchair. Being in Hill country that's a tuff bill to fill but Sky View Cabin owned by Teresa Pedersen fit the bill perfectly! Everything went smooth as glass from the communication during and after the booking/deposit process, to getting directions and meeting us to leading us to the cabin, to the tour of the cabin when we arrived. Teresa owns 2 cabins on this property (Sky View and Pine Crest) called Camp Custer Log Cabins www.custerlogcabins.com/skyview.htm about 1 hour south of Rapid City and 2 miles north of Custer on Highway 385/16 then a few miles west on 284 to Elliott Rd. Both cabins were built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) in the late 1930's/early 1940's as officer quarters and yes both are REAL log cabins! Sky View is the larger cabin that has had an addition built so it now has 5 official bedrooms with one additional adjoining bedroom (no door) on the 2nd floor and two semi private breezeways w/ futons that convert to beds - so Sky View can sleep 17. One bedroom has 3 twin beds, the others have full or queen size beds. There are 2 full baths, a large kitchen w/ every utensil/bowl, etc. you'll ever need, 2 microwaves, with an extra freezer and a pantry in the breezeway. The spacious combo living/dining room has a large picture window, very large deck w/ 2 picnic tables, charcoal grill & swing. Toys and recreational items such as bad mitten, volley ball nets, etc. are provided as well. Teresa even found a small rocking horse for our 2 year old to ride and he loved every minute riding it! The smaller Pine Crest cabin is the original log cabin with no additions and has 3 bedrooms/1 bath and a nice area out front w/ a picnic table and grill. Our Sky View Cabin had everything you can think of and need - filtered water, washer/dryer, sheets & towels and cleaning supplies should you need them. We brought trash bags, paper towels, coffee, tea, some spices but they weren't really needed, there were leftovers from previous renters but I wouldn't count on them being there. Both cabins overlook a VERY large lawn and rolling hillside and only 1 house can be seen in the distance. Cows frequently walk up/down the gravel road and munch on the grass on the public lands across the road from the cabin. All very relaxing and quiet. The location couldn't be more centrally located to visit all the Black Hill attractions, just a 10 minute drive north of Custer and when driving from the cabin to the main road (385/16) you can't miss Crazy Horse. How great is that! FYI... a few tips.
