The island has been very popular with French visitors for some time but is now popular with British holidaymakers too, as well as a few celebrities such as . There are ten villages, each with a distinct character, spanning from the eastern end to the western tip of the island. Ré is a haven for keen cyclists, thanks to an extensive, signposted cycle track network (many cycle tracks are reserved for cyclists) as well as the island's easy terrain.
