A Bear Crossing is a 15 minute drive from dining facilities, shopping centers and activities. Tips to know before booking: 1. Guests are required to bring their own food as none is provided. The clean mountain air makes kids super hungry, so guests should stop at the grocery store in town before they head up to the cabin. Trust us, we've arrived without food and kids wanted to eat as soon as they arrived and we had to go straight back to town. 2. If you're looking for a hotel/motel experience, this cabin is not the place for you. A Bear Crossing is nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains and like any mountain cabin, is off the beaten path so you need to make sure you obtain our directions first. These directions are described down to the tenth of a mile and you need to go slowly to make sure you do not miss any of the roads. The cabin is about 20 miles from Exit 407 on I-40 from Knoxville. There's another route to the cabin via I-40, Exit 435, if you're coming from North Carolina. 3. Bring a boom box and play your favorite songs while relaxing in the hot tub enjoying a cool drink. OPTIONAL: 4. If you are with a group that is on-the-go, check out our suggested 'must do's'. We have them posted on our bulletin board and we offer suggested activities based on how energetic you are. 5. Reasonable daily rates make A Bear Crossing a perfect place to stay and returning guests receive loyalty credits for one day for every three days booked.

Unprofessional, rude, terrible host. Filthy cabin.
Now that my stay is over and I'm no longer in fear of being kicked out of Air BNB, I just wanted to tell my story on what happened with my host, and how we were treated. My host gave us a free early check in day. So instead of the 14th-17th that we paid for, she gave us the 13th free for our anniversary. We arrived the 13th at 3:40(20 minutes early.) I contacted my host and asked if it was okay that we went in 20 minutes early. She agreed as long as the cleaners weren't there. No one was on the property, so we proceeded to go in, take our luggage in, as well as some drinks. We saw dirty dishes in the sink, which wasn't a big deal because there wasn't that many and figured the cleaner just forgot or didn't see them. My husband went into the bathroom and saw towels in the tub, so I went in think "hmm that's kinda strange." While looking through the cabin, we very quickly realized the cleaners NEVER came. There was dirty dishes in sink, trash in kitchen cans, toilet paper and used feminine products in both bathroom trash cans, a roach and dirt in the other bathtub, dirt in hottub, beds had crumbs, and spots all over sheets, and the blankets rolled into a ball on the bed, used condoms on porch(which never got picked up and is STILL currently sitting on the porch.), etc. I tried contacting my host for over an hour while she ignored all messages and phone calls. Once she finally answered, I explained the situation and she said she'd have a cleaner come out. While waiting for over 3hrs in our car, I proceeded to call and message her numerous times, once again she ignored all of them. About an hour later, she answered my phone call, telling us that we should get a motel, we're greatful for our free night, she tried doing something nice for us and we turned it to hell, she doesn't know what we expect her to do etc.. while having an attitude, yelling, and cussing at us. Finally, the cleaner showed up after 9pm and we didn't get checked into the cabin until midnight. This was all after traveling for nearly 7hours, and over 8hrs after our check in time, and our anniversary cake ending up melting in the car from the heat. The next morning we woke up to trash ALL OVER the porch, because the cleaner never took the outside trash out like he was supposed to. I tried to work something out with the host, but nothing happened. She wanted no part in compensating us for the inconvenience, helping us find somewhere else to stay for the night, or even apologizing and taking responsibility. I ended up calling Air BNB to discuss the issues with them and hopefully atleast get the cleaning fee back. They told us that since it was a free night, there's nothing they can do and to be greatful... they also informed me, that if I annoy the host or file a complaint against her, she could kick us out and keep every penny we paid, so we let it go. On the 16th, I ended up contacting air bnb again, in hope to file a complaint, get compensation, an apology for how we were treated, SOMETHING. They informed me that I would be receiving a reimbursement for my cleaning fee as well as the air bnb service fee.. (which would be about $200.) They called back about an hour later and said they spoke with the host and she told them she wasn't giving us even a penny back. They ended up refunding a partial cleaning fee refund of $60. After this, the host ended up making a post about my husband an I on her Facebook page, but after my husband replied to her post, she immediately deleted it. I just wanted to share this for everyone to know what my situation was and to warn other possible renters. This host (the OWNER of the cabin) was extremely rude, unprofessional, and just a terrible human being. This was our anniversary trip/honey moon we never got to take.. this was supposed to be a happy, wonderful, exciting time and instead, we had to deal with this and the constant fear we'd be kicked out at any minute with no place to go. If you can refrain from renting from this host, I highly recommend that you stay far away.

Amazing little gem
We stayed here with my husband and little boy aged 4 for new year Friday to Monday. It was easy to find, sat nav took us straight to the door (google maps). The lodge was clean, fresh and all Christmassy inside. The pool table was an excellent use of our time, when the little one was asleep. The hot tub was just amazing, heated and ready to go on arrival. Fresh towels and all amenities were ready to use on arrival. Gatlinburg was about 25 min drive , as was the island. We went on many adventures, aquarium, rides, arcades. The little gift shops were lovely to walk around. So much to do here.. all in a reasonable distance from the lodge. We didn't see any bears as my little boy hoped (ha ha thank goodness) but there was a little family of raccoons we heard at night. ( make sure the trash can lid is on correct ha ha) my little boy was over the moon that he saw them and the big fat one is now called George .. he he ... We would definitely recommend this lodge to anyone, singles or families. The owners were easily contacted if we needed, and they even offered us an extra night for free, which we gladly accepted and went snow tubing. Would love to stay here again in the future it's my now new go to lodge. Thank you for having us. Mr&Mrs Lewis

Comfortable cabin for small groups.
Finding the cabin was easy with Google maps, and we did not have to use the directions provided. The cabin was comfortable, and far from the main roads. When we first arrived, we did not have cellular service and could not access the internet or make phone calls. We expected this since the cabin was deep in the woods and away from the city. We looked around for the WI-FI device, but could not find it, so we referred to the rental agreement saved on our phones. However, we could not find any mention of where the WI-FI device was. We headed to town to get some phone service or cellular data and texted the owner but no response. I figured maybe it was a home phone that could not receive texts. We eventually called the number almost two hours later, and the owner picked up and told us where the WI-FI device was. We found it in the laundry room, where she told us it was. The next day we got a message from the owner saying they were disappointed and the location of the WI-FI device was in the documents. However, nowhere in the documents does it state where the WI-FI device is. The only time the owner mentioned the location was in between our messages on TripAdvisor, which we could not access because we had no cellular service at the cabin. The owner also messaged me saying to reread the rental agreement and that they do not want any damage to the property. I do not see how having trouble finding the WI-FI device equates to property damage, but to each their own. Overall, the cabin was clean for the most part. The few pots and pans provided were dirty and greasy, so we had to wash them before we used them. The kitchen table on the side closest to the wall was sticky, appearing to be spilt soda, but we cleaned it up before we sat and ate dinner the first night. When we sat down and ate dinner, we found some tortilla chips underneath the table that our feet stepped on, probably left over from the previous people there. In front of the fridge was a small trail of what appeared to be milk going to the trash can. We cleaned up the spilt milk and tortilla chips the first night. Another person in my party said there was black mold on the side of the tub in their bathroom, which I never saw. The last three days of our stay, we got woken up by trucks in the yard between 7 am – 9 am. In total, there were four trucks that used the driveway and yard to turn around or loiter. The trucks were moving trucks and delivery trucks. We never confronted the trucks or went outside when they were there. One of the trucks parked in the driveway and sat there for around 15-20 minutes before leaving. We were hoping the cabin claiming to be away from the city noise would be away from the city noise. I guess you can take the cabin out of the city but can’t take the city out of the cabin. After we left and got home, the owner messaged me about the housekeeper finding cigarette butts in the yard and said they would contact TripAdvisor. No one in my group smokes, so I figured one or all the trucks threw their cigarette butts in the yard.

I have since hired new cleaners and obtained T-Mobile for WiFi service. I asked the neighbor who owned the trucks and he did not know. They shouldn't have been there. I'm sorry for the inconveniences. Jan Jan

Hidden gem
It was an exhausting experience trying to find this place in the dark. But once we were there, it was perfect for us. We like seclusion and this had it. It’s nestled in a mountain 30 minutes from pigeon forge an 20 minute gatlinburg.

Nice secluded Cabin
My family and I really enjoyed this nice secluded cabin. The WiFi didn’t work very well but you have to forfeit luxuries for the location in the mountains. Hoping we can stay in this cabin again.

Not what we expected.
We love Tennessee, and this was not our first trip, So we did have some expectations for our cabin. When we first got to the cabin, (which was easier to find than we thought but some people may find it a challenge) There’s a huge branch blocking the turn about drive! When we entered the cabin it looked relatively nice. It has a nice open floor plan. There was 4 of us myself, hubby, and two teens. There’s 2 bedrooms and a pullout couch. Which would have worked perfectly if there was linens for the pullout bed, but no such luck. And it states if linens were missing we’d be charged so I told the owner because I didn’t want to be responsible for “missing linens” she said she would ask her housekeeper and get back to us...nothing. We also had issues with the tv where we had to keep resetting it, because the satellite would just kick off. The Tv definitely needs an update. Called owner about this as well...resulted in my husband spending over an hour troubleshooting on the phone with direct tv. Twice. The cabin wasn’t very well kept either dusty headboards, bug carcasses in the overhead lighting above the beds..I mean when it’s advertised as there’s a housekeeper maybe they should actually clean the cabin. The cabin needs a few updates. And quite honestly would not recommend this cabin to my friends and family to stay. While the owner did offer us a meal, to make up for the tv, we thought she would better invest that into fixing the cabin. While we’ll definitely be back to Tennessee and this specific area, will not be returning to a bear crossing.

Hi, I'm sorry you didn't like my cabin. The TV is new, bought in March, and the last guests changed the mode and didn't return the mode to the correct setting. I'm sorry that I didn't know how to change the mode. My housekeeper said the linens for the sofa bed were in the closet in the back bedroom. We have pest service every 90 days because it's a mountain cabin. I'm sorry you found dead bugs. And as far as the tree, storms knock down trees all the time and we remove them when we see them. Once again' I'm sorry. I advertise that my cabin is not fancy, but its comfortable. Jan

Remote location
Cabin was in the mountains. GPS could not find the exact location. Owner needs to put a sign on the access road leading to the cabin as we went by it several times. We thought is was a personal driveway. Also roads are narrow leading to cabin. Since it was not easy to find initially we did not want to return to the cabin after dark. All excusions were made during the day. King bedroom has a torn shower curtain liner. Sofa in living room is old and very uncomfortable, needs replacing. Fireplace was great! Pool table gave us many hours of entertainment. Cabin was well stocked. If cabin can accommodate 4 people it would be nice to have 4 chairs to sit on the front porch instead of two.

Hi, Thank you for your comments. I've had signs there a couple of times and they were stolen. I suppose by honeymooners. As far as the GPS, it stops by the 5 mailboxes that I have noted in my directions. The road up to my cabin is a private road with no name but the directions say to turn left at the 5 mailboxes and I don't know how to make the directions clearer than to turn left at the 5 mailboxes.. I didn't know the shower liner was torn, I will have it replaced and I'm sorry you thought the sofa was old and uncomfortable, because it's not that old. The reason that it is uncomfortable is because it's a queen sofa bed and the hardware for the bed makes it uncomfortable. I'll look into replacing the sofa when I'm down there in March. Also, regarding the rocking chairs, there is also a two person gilder right next to the rocking chairs. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourselves. Jan
