Puffin cottage is a lovely place to stay. It had everything we could have possibly needed and was clean and comfortable. It is very handy for the local shops as it is just behind the main street. I would definitely stay there again!More

Thank you Helen for your lovely review. We like to think of Puffin as home from home as it was once upon a time to my family. We know, it's not always easy trying to keep everyone happy and sometimes rentals can be a bit...More

Puffin cottage is a well equipped cottage close to amenities and beach. Unfortunately we arrived to find building materials, rubbish and cement mixer in the drive as work was being done on house that backed onto the cottage and the drive was being used for...More

Dear Susan, I am so deeply apologetic that your arrival to Puffin Cottage was so unwelcoming. I was not on the island at the time and my housekeeper had already gotten the cottage ready for you and left. Tragically it appears the local builder had...More

About the neighborhood
The area around Port Ellen is amazing and fascinating, from the Kildalton Cross, a symbol of the earliest Christianity in this Isle of Islay to the equally magnificent headland called the Mull Of Oa facing out across the Atlantic Ocean toward America and Ireland. Within a decent walking distance can be found the distilleries of Laphraoig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg all of which delight in showing visitors the art and magic of making Uisge Beatha, (The Water of Life) and the tasting afterward!
Port Ellen has two beaches of it's own, Loch Leodamais to the east and Port Ellen to the west where the famous Islay Beach Rugby Festival is held on the 2nd Saturday in June with invitation teams from all over GB. Both are safe shallow bays ideal for children building sand castles yet still in the he...

How to get there
Airport: Islay: 5.0 mi
Ferry: Port Ellen: 0.1 mi
There are two ferry ports on Islay, Port Ellen in the South and Port Askaig in the N.E of the island. Calmac who operate the ferries to the Highlands and Islands have split the timetable to allow both ports to be used equally, although in bad weathers it tis the more sheltered Port Askaig that is favoured. There are several ferry crossings each day leaving Kennacraig on the Mull of Kintyre and the sailing takes between 2/2.5 hours depending on the destination. For travellers with their own marine transportation there is a new marina in Port Ellen next to the Pier Head, and lovely little sheltered harbours at Bowmore, Port Charlotte and Portnahaven.FlyBe operated by Loganair fly out of Glasgow twice a day to Islay Airport situated at Glenegadale 8kms from Port Ellen and right next to the be... more
