The Gables
Just back from a lovely weekend staying at the Gables in Troon. There were twelve of us (six couples). The house was very clean, comfortable, spacious and had everything we required! The garden was beautiful which was enhanced by glorious weather!
The owner, Michael, welcomed us warmly on arrival ensuring that we understood how everything operated and that we had everything we needed. It’s a very unique and interesting house with large social spaces to spread out in. The location is perfect for exploring the Ayrshire coast!

This house is AMAZING! We rented it for my daughter’s 21st Birthday celebrations and it was perfect. We have six older children and it accommodated us no problem. Family nearby were able to come and visit and with four public rooms and a huge kitchen there was plenty of room for everyone. Fabulous garden area too and the host Michael was so friendly and nearby for any issues although there were none. We had a great weekend and would recommend it to anyone.

Nightmare Host & House - please avoid!!!!!!!
This is my first ever review on trip advisor, I always chose not to affect someone else’s business by leaving negative reviews but this HOST has been a nightmare. We booked him via Airbnb and check I went all smooth and then started the problem - hot water stopped after 2 showers and the house was advertised for 12 people! Shortly after, there was no water at all! When complained the host took almost a day to respond and his response was it’s a small tank, water finishes after a few shower so space out your shower from 4.30am in the morning or take two minutes shower or go for a swim at the beach! Until we checked out the problem was not sorted. We paid over £2.5k to stay in his so called Victorian House. If he had been sorry about it or even acknowledged the problem I wouldn’t be here writing this review. One the second day he came to us to the kitchen and told “I went down to read the review from Asian families, they had no issue”. We were in absolute shock, what has water got to do with us being an Asian family?
It was not just one issue but many, the slats of one of the bed (the basement room) came off, until the day we checked out he didn’t even ask about it, we tried to tell him many times but just wouldn’t listen. He also said they had no cleaners and the wife and himself had to clean the property and this was clearly visible - there was a dirty nappy and underwear in one of the wardrobes, there were clothes, books, soft toys, random papers etc inside the wardrobes. He for once didn’t think the consequences of the COVID 19. Not sure how he managed to get 5 start reviews! Probably he treated us like this was because we are “an Asian family” like he said.
At the time of the check out, he told us he bought a plumber in while we were out that day - we couldn’t believe our ears! How could he bring random people in without even informing us or even seeking permission while we had all our person belongings in there? The plumber checked the showers, meaning they’ve been to the showers and he for once did not thing of hygiene/Covid 19.
We have currently opened a claim with the Airbnb. I have never in my life came across someone as rude as Mike. He for once didn’t treat us like we were important - he clearly had a problem that we were Asian. He only bought the plumber in to change the hot water settings from winter to summer, that’s all he did. He did not acknowledge that there was a problem with the showers. He wasn’t sorry about anything.
I have attached pictures for proof unfortunately trip advisor does allow me to attach videos to show the problem with the shower.
Hosts like Mike should learn their lesson to treat people with respect, acknowledge when there’s a problem and respect the fact that people work their ass off to make money to come on that one holiday every year. I spent a whole year saving up for this holiday only to be wasted on house/host like this. We had elderly people and a 6 month old baby in the crowd and having no water has been a nightmare. A similar problem was reprinted in a review on Airbnb if someone wants to read!

NIGHTMARE GUESTS PLEASE AVOID.
In 6 years of being a host on Airbnb, these are by far the worst guests we have ever had. Their untruthful account of their stay has been fabricated simply to claim a full refund from Airbnb.
They claim that there was a problem with the showers. There was not. We had guests solidly for two months in July and August, prior to this booking, and two bookings already in September. There were no reports of any problems and we had good reviews from these guests. My plumber and myself have checked the shower system, and again, no issues or problems.
They took photographs of several “staged” issues to back up their claim.
They said there was trouble with one of the beds slat system. However , there was no notification of any problem to us, during the rental period, and we believe they had removed some slats themselves.
There was a baby’s 6 month+ nappy (not used) in the back bedroom wardrobe. They claimed it was used. They had an eight-month-old baby who stayed with the parents, in the back bedroom .
They claimed dirty underwear was found in one of the wardrobes. This statement was not true, all sixteen wardrobes were cleaned, emptied and checked prior to the booking. No dirty underwear was ever found, we believe it was removed by the guests on their departure.
The house was professionally cleaned following all COVID-19 rules, before and after.
In order to support their claim, they used the race card, and called me racist and rude. We considered this to be laughable, as the guests were of Asian descent. My two children and wife are also of Asian descent.
I had no conversation at all with them regarding any refunds.
On the day of departure there was damage to the wooden floor in the lounge. We have photographs of the floor before and after the rental. They have decline any responsibility.
I really don’t want to comment on their observations of the value of the house, their minimum wages, the cost of their holiday, and much more, all to back up their claim from Airbnb. I think all you have to do is to look at out reviews to realise this has all been made up.
The day after their arrival they asked us if they could have a free extra day because of their fictitious problems. This ,I refused, this perhaps, is a contributory factor in their antagonism toward us.
We will not be recommend these guest to anyone.

Family weekend
Had a lovely 2 days at The Gables with our family. It is a very beautiful red sandstone house. The views from the front bedrooms are terrific. You can see right across to the Isle of Arran. The owner Michael showed us round and told us where everything was.
The family thought it was great and it was lovely for us all to be together again.
The house is practically just across the road from the beach and our 3 grandkids went swimming twice and loved it.

Amazing house, pity about the ants!
Amazing house to stay in but unfortunately it was spoiled slightly with the ants in the kitchen! Turned cooker on and they were everywhere! We were celebrating a special anniversary meal and had to deal with ants, not ideal. The owner did say they had dealt with them but obviously not fully.
Apart from that the house is amazing with beautiful views from two of the bedrooms. Garden lovely but not child friendly.
We did enjoy our stay.

A wonderfully spacious, well equippped house in a fine location.
The Gables was set in a wonderful location facing the Isle of Arran and in easy waking distance to the beach at Troon.the rooms were very spacious with flexibility for 12 of us ( family and friends for a 92nd birthday celebration) to sit comfortably. The garden at the rear was very well maintained and colourful and my 92 year old mother loved sitting in the large, bright conservatory. In fact we are all our meals there instead of using the more formal dining room. Much use was made of the large sitting room at the front, people enjoying the window seat arrangement. The kitchen was extremely well equipped with an Aga & conventional oven and lots of coffee capsules available for an easy to use coffee machine.. A second kitchen meant that we were not getting in the way of each other.
Little touches such as fresh flowers and a welcome box of goodies were greatly appreciated. The only slight downside was the lack of en suite facilities and the main bathroom would benefit from updating and a more efficient shower.
Otherwise the house was supremely comfortable, very inviting and easy to live in. Thank you Michael and Dow for being such helpful, welcoming hosts.

Hi Clarrisa, We much appreciate your comments.
Since your stay the bathroom has been completely updated mainly based on your comment.
The property has 7 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms(2 ensuite ) as well as 4 washand basins and a cloakroom with wc and basin. It's difficult to provide further facilities in a 130 years old Victorian property . We make sure there is a full description of the property to avoid any disappointment on arrival.
Thanks once again.

The perfect base for golfers
The Gables is located about a good 3 iron and a wedge away from Royal Troon itself and within a 10 minute drive of Western Gails and Dundonald Links.
The property itself is well maintained and has a homely feel about the place, we enjoyed Mike and Dows hospitality during a recent golfing holiday (Sept 2017) and all 12 of our party were impressed by both the spacious nature of the property and its location.
I would thoroughly recommend this property.
