The house is beautifully appointed in traditional cottage style and the rooms are wood panelled lending the cottage a very warm and welcoming feel. Please note that the stairs to the first floor are steep. While the setting feels wonderfully remote, the cottage is very accessible. It is on the edge of the village, next door to the Achiltibuie Stores, which stocks a good selection of basic groceries, fresh locally caught seafood and household necessities. The Loan has plenty of parking, is very sheltered and set in 1/4 acre of mature gardens which provide an ideal area for children to run about in. This cottage feels like a home and will give holiday makers a really special place from which to explore the amazing wilderness of northwest Scotland.
Achiltibuie is a lovely village and thriving community based on the Coigach peninsula. It is home to the well-renowned Summer Isles Hotel, which can be booked for dinner and Altandhu (6 miles along the single track) offers Am Fuaran pub with real ales and classic pub food. FISK gallery in Polbain has locally made pottery and other craft works for sale. Fresh fish, scallops and prawns can be bought from local fishermen.
Ullapool, a beautiful 45min drive away, through glorious mountains and lochs, has a good selection of shops (including a pharmacy, bookshop and a good supermarket). Ullapool also has some great places to have lunch, have a coffee or dine. There are also boat trips to see birds and wildlife, leaving from the pier in Badentarbet and from Ullapool.
The property benefits from 'hands on' caretakers Simon and Catherine Mackenzie who have plenty of local knowledge and can advise you on all matters Achiltibuie.

A beautiful house in a wonderful coastal location.
We have just spent a week at The Loan. We loved the atmospheric old house and also the newer sun room, which was a bright place to sit in the evening, especially as, remarkably for somewhere so far North, it was often too hot to sit at the garden table ! Very well equipped with lots of books, including walking guides, which were very useful. A wonderful area for walking and beaches.

Highly recommended
The Loan is a very comfortable and well equipped house, with a view across to the sea and the Isles. It is the perfect base for exploring this stunning part of Scotland. The local stores is very well stocked and is just a short stroll away. You can easily access the local harbour for a wonderful boat trip round the Summer Isles. We had a great week and hope to return before too long.

The is a character property with a quirky style in a lovely part of Achiltibuie with beautiful walks nearby and stunning scenery. We booked due to 5 star reviews and cosy looking photos.
We were however disappointed at lack of attention to detail. We were left with small amount of watered down hand soap and dishwashing liquid. The area where dishes were kept was dusty and unclean. The microwave had old foodstuff stick to roof of it. The area around cooler holding cooking utensils was greasy and dusty.
Pillow cases were stained, one with fresh blood.. the bed creaks so bad disturbing our sleep.
The bathroom is large and roomy with carpeted floor, great shower, but shower curtains had black mould on them
We predominantly used the large sun room but was not allowed to open the large patio doors into the garden area where you can sit outside.
This property is definitely not disabled friendly. As stated in the description of the Loan , the inside staircase is very steep with narrow steps. The outside paths are made using large stones making walking difficult for some.. the garden area in not useable, overgrown and wild.
There was also building works going on next door.
We understand that no holiday cottage can be perfect but there was too many issues for us to feel looked after or even catered for..
we also had no internet all week We had it for one day then not again.
I work in the medical profession and had concerns re cleaning between clients.. and measures taken with covid regulations. Watered down soap is not good enough! Sanitizer is available downstairs and upstairs .
We are sorry to wrote this review but we had to be honest and advise of the cleanliness and general uncared for treatment

We were very sorry that you had a disappointing experience in our home and we have since been in touch. We just want to let prospective guests know that we have used the winter of 2021 to make the cottage even cosier with new towels and bed linen (100% Egyptian cotton). Now that the pandemic seems to be behind us, we have been allowed to return a lot of homely touches and we think the Loan has been restored to its former glory. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new in the coming season.

perfect location, spacious and beautiful house, really well kitted out.
We had a magical week in The Loan. The instructions for getting there and getting in were very clear. It has a wonderful sunroom, and table and chairs in the garden, a really well kitted out kitchen, lovely art work on the walls, comfy beds and a truly homely feel. We appreciated having a downstairs loo as well as a huge bathroom. we didn't need to light the fire but it was nice to know it was there in case. it's two houses away from the village shop, which is very well stocked and has warm and friendly staff. There is masses to do without going very far from the house. we fully intend to return.

Wonderful
We had a wonderful week at the Loan, the house was spotless, cosy and welcoming and the area was beautiful. The log fire kept us warm through the periods of wet weather, the beds were comfortable and the range cooker was easy to use. There is a well-stocked shop around 100 yards down the road and also a cafe about 5 minutes' drive or 10 minutes' walk away. The pebble beach on the other side of the road is perfect for rockpooling and there are gorgeous sandy beaches 10 minutes' drive away at Acheninver and Achnahaird. Countless beautiful walls in the area, wildlife all around and Ullapool and Lochinver 45 minutes away down an impossibly scenic road. Us and our two kids had our best holiday ever. We will definitely be back.

Fabulous stay at The Loan, Achiltibuie
The house is very comfortable and well equipped, in a wonderful spot with a great local shop a few doors down. So many places to visit in the area. What a gem. We'd like to come back for a repeat stay. Highly recommended.

The villages in Coigach (Achiltibuie, Polbain, Althandhu, Reiff and Badenscallie and Acheninver) have a wonderfully welcoming feel. The communities here are well served by a good village store, a hotel, a local art shop and a pub that serves great scampi and chips. Whether you are into hill walking, beachcombing, bird watching, fishing or simply relaxing and getting away from it all, few places that feel so remote are so well served.
Getting around
The villages of Coigach are built along a long strip of road that runs from Achiltlibuie to Culnacraig at one end and goes around in a loop from Badentarbet via Polbain, Altandhu, Reiff to Achnahaird at the other end. A car is essential and if you can take a bike, the cycling around the loop offers great views and a good day out.
