Island House boasts an enviable position in a beautiful rural location and a large fully enclosed garden with a patio. The property was tastefully and thoroughly renovated in 2014. The nearest beaches can be enjoyed less than a mile away. Nearby Kingsbridge is a busy market town distinguished by fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, with a largely Elizabethan colonnaded Shambles. A summer ferry runs from here to the sailing and holiday resort of Salcombe, whose calm waters are strewn with small craft, with the ruined Fort Charles at the entrance to the harbour injecting a touch of romance. Just east of Island House approximately 1m away is the lagoon of the Slapton Ley nature reserve which supports herons, terns, widgeon and great crested grebes. Less than ten miles along the coast is Dartmouth, which is one of the most popular and picturesque tourist destinations in Devon, as it's not only close to the sea, but it's also situated on the River Dart. Further afield is the unique resort of Torquay, where the small marina can seem almost Mediterranean, especially at night when coloured lights festoon the harbour. The ground floor of the property is all on one level and comprises a hall which runs through the property. The hall provides access to new kitchen overlooking the rear private garden. The dining room can be accessed through double doors from the kitchen or from the Hall. The sitting room is comfortably furnished and includes a flat screen TV and DVD. The bathroom has a full size bath with shower over. The two front bedrooms which both have a sea view have double beds. Whilst both rear bedrooms are arranged as twin rooms, one of which can be set up as double. All four bedrooms are well appointed and a good size. The first floor is completed by a WC. There is a further put up bed that can be used to accommodate a ninth visitor if required.

A perfect family holiday home.
This was our third holiday at Island House. The house is situated in a beautiful village located a few minutes drive from Torcross beach. The house provided everything we needed. It has a lovely, comfortable family feel making it very welcoming. Looking out onto the village green, with a play area, it is a perfect place for children too. We would highly recommend it and will definitely return in the future.

Better than expected
Island House is absolutely gorgeous. The photos don’t do it justice. Pretty much everything you need is there. Built in 1901 with big deep window seats to snooze on in the sunshine. Stokenham is a lovely little village away from the hustle and bustle of places like Salcombe but easily accessible to them. Totnes sea front is a 40 minute walk away, mostly off road. There you’ll find the Start Bay Inn - the best fish & chips Mom had ever had in her 86 year life! The beach there is stones / shingle and not great to walk on if you have any mobility issues, but the water is crystal clear. There are sand beaches nearby in Salcombe and Blackpool Sands. The two local pubs looked good but sadly, due to staff shortages, weren’t doing food during our stay. We noticed that a lot of places in the area (shops, restaurants, pubs) had signs for job vacancies. The Church in Stokenham has an interesting history and is amazing in its construction. Sadly the village green doesn’t allow dogs but the house has a secure garden to use. Will definitely return at some point

Recharged the batteries
Had another wonderful stay at Island House. Perfect location for exploring the local area. Lots of places to eat and drink. A beach within 15-20 minute walk. Again we all enjoyed relaxing and having somewhere nice to come back to after exploring the area. Thank you 😊

Beautiful cottage, idyllic location
The whole family had a great time at Island House with all ages catered for - walks, beaches, pubs and a lovely garden for chilling out. The facilities at the cottage are excellent with everything provided that visitors require. The owners were very helpful with pre visit information and the occasional query during it. Thank you.

Idyllic
We spent New Years weekend at Island House, we were hoping for a lovely cottage in a quaint Devonshire village with a quirky little pub and a few nice walks in which we could Enjoy with the dog and Island house did not disappoint!!! A beautiful house in a wonderfully rural setting, the views are stunning! We found not one but two pubs near by, we are a family with small children so found the Church Inn to be more suitable, a friendly welcome & great food. Walks/footpaths are plentiful and there are some lovely places to visit just a short drive. Start Point lighthouse was amongst the favourites. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Island House and definitely look forward to returning in the near future.

Comfy house in stunning location
We rented Island House for six weeks in September and October when our house purchase fell through at the last minute. We couldn't have chosen a better place as a temporary rental. It is a spacious, comfortable, well equipped and in a perfect location. It's just a twenty minute walk to the sea and less than a minute to the nearby friendly thatched pub. In front of the house is.a beautiful green which our children safely played on each night after school whilst I enjoyed the stunning view of the church and the sea. We will always remember our stay there fondly and be forever grateful to Clive for letting us rent his property at such short notice.

Fantastic location
The house was wonderfully situated for exploring quaint villages and beautiful coves. The house itself was well equipped in a small village with adequate space for all our family which was three generations. All the family enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to come back.

A wonderful place for my mother's 90th birthday!
We went as a family holiday to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. The cottage was all we had hoped for. The bedrooms were large and the layout of the cottage suited us just fine. The kitchen is spacious and the gardens were lovely. The separate dining room was excellent for eight people. There is a bbq which we used on a number of occasions and we went to the Tradesman's Arms for the evening meal on the special day. The Church House Inn was also very good although we didn't eat there. There is plenty of garden furniture.

Fabulous holiday cottage in idyllic location
We stayed for a week (2adults, 3 kids and grandparents for part of the week) at Island House and would definitely recommend it. The cottage is spacious, comfortable and had everything we needed for our family holiday. The location is perfect for exploring the area. Great coastal walks, beautiful beaches, friendly pubs and delicious food are all on your doorstep. We were reluctant to leave and would love to come back.

How to get there
If you are coming via Exeter on the A38, there is a scenic route off the Totnes to Kingsbridge road. Turn left at Halwell by the church. Go to the top of the hill and turn left again, towards Dartmouth. After Woodlands on the right and the Dartmouth Golf and Country Club on the left, take the turning on the right, signposted Blackawton and Strete. Follow this road for about 5 miles to Strete and turn right onto the main road. From this road you get stunning views over Slapton Sands and Start Point. Drive along Slapton Sands with the sea on one side and the Ley on the other. Drive through Torcross and up to Stokenham. Turn right at the church and take the narrow road up through the village, past the Tradesman's Arms and Island House is on the right a bit further along the road. Parking is available in front, or in the public car park to the side of the Church House Inn. Alternatively, you can arrive via Kingsbridge. Once in Stokenham, continue forward over the round about, down the hill and straight on when the road bends sharply to the right. Follow signs towards The Tradesman's Arms and Island House is the 5th house on the left.
