Lovely to walk down into Dawlish for train or shops.
Nice garden. Parking is a plus.
Owners just next door and very helpful.

Lovely holiday apartment
We enjoyed our stay at the Mayflower. Good location, beautiful views from patio, nice sitting room and well appointed kitchen. Lynne and Alan were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Our only comment would be the beds could do with updating, bit wobbly and not brilliant mattresses.

As my boss liked to say tell me the facts.....well first off the lounge and the patio afford as good a sea view as you could wish for. It could I suppose be improved by a parasol. The owner is friendly which is as well as there is only a 6 inch high fence between you and their garden. The sea view is achieved by being at the top of a hill mentioned in other reviews. I blocked off strand hill on my sat nav as it's to tight a turn in to the drive.
The house has many homely features, is well appointed and on the whole value for its price point.
The other reviewers are all correct. The beds are metal framed and rickety.
The back portion of the property is flat roofed and shrouded by trees so the bedrooms are dark and cool, yes even in high season and some evidence of damp.
We overcame it by opening patio door, main door and the windows.
I must warn my fellow asthmatics ( despite a request on initial booking ) that feather ( more of a threat to me than covid) is present in one of 2 sofa ( I sat else where) and I felt Ill each morning . When we stripped the beds at the end of the stay I was surprised to find a feather filled mattress overlay.
However the big bug bear was the parking.
Not because it's on street but because we were directed immediately under two huge pines. Our new to us car got covered in pine sap which if you dont know is like drops of bostick. We had to purchase white spirit just to restore visibility to the windscreen. It has taken much careful cleaning to restore our paint work.
The property is close to the beach and town which I enjoyed exploring. Nice enough but maybe not for car owning asthmatics!

A PEACEFUL HAVEN
We have just returned from the Mayflower, and i can say we fully enjoyed it. The photos don`t do it justice. Its a lot bigger than we imagined, with a nice living room and spacious sofas to lounge about on. When we were about we spent most of the time on the patio, and the view is stunning, My husband has a railway poster with the exact same view. We were impressed with the kitchen which is new, and had everything you could need. We slept like logs as its in a very quiet area, but only a short walk 5 minutes and your in the centre of everything. Would we come back YES! We absolutely loved it, and we felt like we had known the owners for years.I just wish we were there now.

great location for family seaside holiday
The host was welcoming and made suggestions to where we could visit during our stay, the property was in a great location, just a 5 minute walk to Dawlish central/beach front/train station down a very steep hill! There was a small outdoor seating area with washing line and lovely view of the sea.
Whilst the property was suited to our needs (somewhere to wash/sleep and eat) we felt it could do with some improvements - carpets were a bit grubby, cobwebs/dust in most rooms, beds pretty rickety, dirty kitchen utensils, old and slow cooker and a musty smell like the property needed a good airing.
For the price it was acceptable and we had a great holiday overall but I dont think we would stay there again unless it was improved/updated a bit.

Hello Jenni
I am sorry that you were unhappy with the accommodation. I wish you had told me during your stay as I could rectify some of your concerns. It is strange that the visitor who occupied the flat the week before you gave it an excellent review

A hidden gem a lovely stay as usual
A very nice stay as usual . We have been coming to stay for the last 15years and we have always found it a comfortable and conveniently close to the Beach and local attractions. Warm and welcoming host as usual. Only slight criticism would be being slightly cold in the evenings and maybe having more room to hang towels and cloths in the bathroom e.g hooks on Bathroom door. we look forward to seeing you next year and to enjoy your lovely hospitality soon.

A hidden Gem
Lovely accommodation in a nice quiet area very handy for the town, beach, railway station and local walks. Lovely patio area to sit and relax in the evening and look at the superb views. Accommodation very high standard and plenty of room for a family of four. Extra touches like milk and tea & coffee available on arrival. Very friendly and knowledgeable owners. In summary glad we found this hidden gem as we had an excellent weeks holiday in a very friendly and lovely location. Thank you see you in 2019 - the Plumpton family from Worcester

Good location but very chilly and damp during our stay
The location was spot on for us with easy access to coastal walks along to Teignmouth and Shaldon (via the ferry) in the West and Starcross in the East, where you can get a different ferry to Exmouth.
We were there for two weeks and didn't use the car at all, preferring to get the train to Exeter and also Exmouth where we could walk on to Budleigh Salterton. Great views all along the coast and Exeter is a very interesting city too.
The accommodation let things down somewhat. We were the first users this season and the place never really felt aired out or dry. The copious number of air freshener stick thingys and the silica gel dehumidifiers on top of two of the wardrobes indicate this is a known problem. The dehumidifiers we didn't spot until just before we left, the air fresheners made themselves known 2 seconds after entering the property and were evicted to the garden (covered with a plastic bag to stop them getting rained on etc) during our stay. Ghastly smelly things they are.
The heating is provided by electric convectors with time switches and thermostats. All very controllable and the electricity is paid by meter and a fair rate is charged. However, although the heaters work well they would need to be on for ages to dry the place out properly, certainly in the weather we had during our stay, and it didn't take long for the place to start to feel cold again once switched off.
The property could really do with a bit of TLC. The cooker in the kitchen came out of the Ark- and it was probably 2nd hand when it went in! Should be in the V&A museum. There is a microwave but I like cooking more than one thing at a time and baking too and a slow, ancient electric stove doesn't do it for me. I'd nearly got to grips with it by the time we left, nearly. Might have managed a bit faster if some of the icons on the oven control hadn't been worn too much to interpret. The lack of any extractor in the kitchen didn't help with the damp problem.
I'm really not trying to be negative about the place, if you rent 'Mayflower' during the hot summer months and are only eating salads or eating out then you should be fine.

We are sorry that you have given my holiday flat a fairly negative review, especially as you seemed so positive about it during your stay Expenditure of less than £1 per day on electricity to cover heating, hot water and cooking in April early May seems unusually low and maybe why you felt it chilly and damp
For information the cooker was bought from Comet at their closing sale in November 2012

Dawlish is a small town with excellent links by road, rail and public transport to Exeter, Torbay, Plymouth and Dartmoor. The town is centred around the picturesque Lawn and Brook and is famous for its black swans. The railway line hugs the coast from Dawlish Warren through Dawlish to Teignmouth and is considered to be one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the Country.
A steam train passes through Dawlish most weekends in the summer.
Getting around
Public transport is readily available via buses and trains to most parts of Devon including Barnstaple on the North Coast

How to get there
We recommend that drivers use the A379 coast road to Dawlish as some sat-nav's suggest alternative routes to the back of Dawlish via very narrow and steep lanes
