This is the sea shore at the bottom of the croft great rock fishing. There is a rod in cottage.
The Bridge at Valasay walk over the Toab Loch an ideal location for seeing seals. Great rock fishing
The bridge to Bernera with its standing stones - There is also a Viking Mill and Fort on Bernera
Standing Stones of Bernera reflect the major stone circle  site at  Callanish ( 30 min drive)
Edge of the village looking back to Lewis
This is the view over to Little Bernera with its  deserted beach and old church yard. Boat trip.
Yet another Bernera fresh water loch. Fishing for trout on Bernera is great fun.
Bosta beach view over to Old Hill - golden sands ideal picnic spot. Iron age house opned in summer.
The Lewis Chessmen - Uig Beach - this is where the carved Viking chess set was discovered.
Cheer Up -Cheeky chops !!!!! this is the king - other wood carvings seen  at ferry and airport
Traffic congestion - Lewis style - no need to be in a hurry.
Statue to the herring girls of Stornoway who made Stornoway famous.
Lewis Castle  refurbishment in process -  hope to open next year.

Harsgier View is a modernised stand alone cottage in the Village of Hacklete on Great Bernera. (once home of my wife's ancestors) it sleeps four people it has one double room - one twin room and is in an ideal "get away from it all" location for a relaxing holiday. Perched high up on the hill, the cottage pops into view as you round one of the sharp bends on the windy single track road. Pleased with the quality of furnishings, lovely and clean with flowers and welcome pack a nice thought. Lovely walks in all directions from the cottage with the dog. We did the whole of Lewis and...

From the wonderful welcome basket of locally produced goodies to the comfy four poster and the kitchen that was so well equipped we happily self catered (ok, it was mostly fresh scallops, black pudding etc) but still it was no drama to self cater here. And so to the views...from waking up to the sheep peering quizzically at you through...

About the neighborhood
The village of Hacklete is one of many small villages on Bernera which make up this unique rural environment where the people are friendly and welcoming. <BR><BR>The cottage is centered in a district steeped in Norse history. Village names resound like a role call from Viking Valhalla Valtos, Kneep, Reef, Uigen, Mangersta , Hacklete, Valsay and Croir the origin of the name Bernera ( Bjarnarey) thought to be Bjorn's Island. Bernera is the site of the Land Riots of 1874 a direct response to the Highland Clearances history was made when the result was a new Act of Parliament which gave crofters protection from eviction. <BR><BR>
