Decent but dated holiday accommodation close to many locations
Just got back from a very good holiday in Cornwall having stayed at Tinners Cottage and there are many good things to say with one or two things that could do with a brush up but it’s all mainly positive. The cottage is semi-detached with another holiday cottage being part of the main building. The building is in very good condition and the large quiet grounds it stands in are very well maintained. A gardener turned up when we were there and cut the grass and it spruced the place up and made it very pleasant. The grounds are quite large and safe and kids can readily run around. Each cottage has a good sized table outside the front door allowing for outdoor eating and drinking. There is a beautiful view from the grounds as well. Inside the cottage, the initial impression is one of “dated” but it was clean and tidy and what looked like new carpet. There were two small sofas facing a non-smart tv with plenty of terrestrial channels. The room is darker than I would have liked. It needs an extra window to lighten it up but this will only really be apparent for those staying in during bad weather. There is a dining table with seating for 6 but it is cramped seating and getting all 6 people sitting comfortably would be difficult but we had some eating at the table and some on their knees in front of tv so no major issue. Kitchen is functional but we felt fridge was too small for a property sleeping 6 and the toaster was a two slice toaster whereas a larger one would have been better. Microwave needs replacing at time of writing. Small points but worth mentioning especially if a large group of people going to stay. The sofas would not be sufficient for everyone to sit comfortably so the property is equipped for 4 much more than 6. That said, kids can sit on floor or snuggle up so my point is more valid for 6 adults or 6 grown ups. There is not a lot of working area for anyone who likes to prepare their own food and meals. There is enough but it’s limited. There is a double bedroom downstairs with a good sized en-suite bathroom and a good sized, clean and modern shower. Toilet is dated but hey..it’s a toilet, and clean. Upstairs is a family bathroom similar to the en-suite but with a bath. Both upstairs bedrooms were large and spacious. One was a twin room without tv, the other was a double with cot and a smart tv. Carpet was new and clean. Mattresses were basic but I could sleep as did everyone else and I am a poor sleeper. A good sleep is critical for me and I felt I got that. Hot water was plentiful if you used the boost function as described in the cottage manual. Washing machine and drier is not in the cottage. They are in the garage which is also where the gardening tools are kept. There are three washing machines and three driers although I am told, you have to pay for using the drier..... Garage is clean and tidy and spacious but I had expected both items to be in the cottage. We were one of the first families to enter the property after the opening up of travel restrictions during COVID and so we faced issues hopefully not apparent under usual circumstances and so what we also experienced might not be common place, and they were: 1. No lamps in any room so all lighting was from bright ceiling lights. Lamps apparently removed due to covid and the items being “high touch items” but far more so is the tv remote control, door handles, toilet handles and so on so not sure why lamps were removed. 2. Stale smell similar to that of an old person’s home and so we had to buy air freshener and plug-in air purifiers. There are grab handles in downstairs toilet and a front door so there are signs it was used by an OAP 3. Poor cleaning of cutlery drawer with food bits obvious amongst cutlery. 4. No curtain over front door window so at night, it is possible to look from outside in and whilst the location is very private, I don’t like the possibility that someone can look into the property and see me in the property. No towels are provided and a few items you’d expect to find in a kitchen were also missing but it was still functional. Strangest thing of all was that there were no locks on the toilet / bathroom doors. This was explained as being because of children but my guess is that they were removed because of an old person having lived their and they could have locked themselves in. Bathroom locks need to be reinstated. It is the one thing that really needs addressing and if there is a worry that kids can lock themselves in, install locks that can be opened from the outside if needs be. The location is not near a beach but a short drive will get you to Porthtowan, Chapel Porth, St. Agnes and Portreath. There is a good pasty / bakery shop within walking distance as is a farm shop selling extremely good meats. There is a pub within a minutes drive but it’s not great. Other pubs within a 5 minutes drive are better. Getting around Cornwall from this location is easy and so even though it is not next to a beach, it is in a good location and nothing is difficult to get to. All in all, the good outweigh the few bad things and it makes for a good holiday accommodation for those not looking for, or expecting, modern comforts.

1) The cottages were rebuilt under the control of the Conservation Officer and from an old photo taken in the 1850's, to which we had to comply, therefore you cannot add extra windows on a whim. Both cottages have LED lighting throughout, with 2 wall lights and 2 spotlights over the beds for reading with 2 way switching. The table lamp mentioned was taken out due to being an unnecessary high touch item. Door handles, remote controls, toilet handles are necessary items and sanitised accordingly. 2) The sofas were bought as 2 x 3 seater sofas and the pine dining table was bought as a 6 person seating table, along with 6 pine chairs. 3) There is an overflow fridge in the Laundry Room, plus a freezer. 4) These guests filled in the booking form as 2 adults + 2 children, so who these extra people were who had to sit on the floor, we do not know. 5) Toaster - we always leave a 2nd spare toaster in the cupboard under the microwave, so if there was shortage of toast slots, it could have been solved by our 2nd toaster. 6) Microwave - Guests sent us a video of the microwave not turning. There was nothing wrong with it that aligning the glass plate with the turntable underneath wouldn't have solved (which we told them to do and never heard anymore) and it is still in use today. 7) Worktop space - There is 5 metres of worktop space and we have never had a complaint before - see photos of kitchen area on our advert. 8) Tinner's Cottage is wheelchair accessible, hence grab handles in the ground floor toilet to assist someone using a wheelchair. 9) We cannot think what kitchen equipment is missing, as the cupboards and drawers are full of items to use and previous guests have appreciated and commented on this. 10) What the guests obsession with an old person is, we don't know. The cottages have been holiday cottages from day one and the locks on both bathroom doors were removed because we soon realised a CHILD could have locked themselves in and been very frightened. Again, first time this has been mentioned and has not been a problem before. The doors are ledge and brace cottage style doors and not suited to modern type locks and we will not be reinstating them for the reason we have stated. 11) Modern comforts - Some would say our cottages are traditional Cornish granite cottages, sympathetically renovated with matching traditional decor and colour schemes, as was used in the Engine House. If you are expecting stainless steel and glass throughout, we are not it.

Peaceful Cornish countryside break
Tinner’s Cottage was in a lovely location - nestled in beautiful countryside close to the North Cornwall coast. Excellent tracks for dog walking from the cottage and further afield Perranporth beach was perfect for an early morning walk. The cottage is well laid out and had plenty of room for all of us. All in all a great week and we look forward to visiting again in the future.

Perfect base to explore Cornwall
Great location, 2 minutes from the A30 near Redruth, meaning loads of the main areas to visit are within 30mins, with great family friendly beaches only 10 minutes away. Family of 5 but loads of space in the cottage and never felt cramped! Kitchen fully stocked, and books, dvds and beach basics like windbreaks were all there. Would not hesitate to rebook! Owners gave really good communication before the trip including tips on best locations and the use of the train park and ride for St Ives, so glad we did not drive in there without it!

Fully equipped accommodation perfect for a family or group of friends. Perfect base to easily explore Cornwall
We loved our stay in Tinners Cottage. It was warm, welcoming and well laid out to accommodate our group of 5 friends. We found everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare a hearty Christmas dinner. In terms of location, everything was a less than an hours drive away from us. It was a perfect base to explore Cornwall. We loved St Agnes and Perranporth nearby. Check out Prima Bakeries up the road for a takeaway pastie and delicious sausage rolls.

End of Summer Family Holiday
We have just returned from a week in this lovely cottage. The cottage itself is in a beautiful, quiet location, near to shops, places to visit and beautiful beaches. We loved the playing field to tire out our toddler. The cottage was very clean, spacious and extremely well equipped for meal times. We’ve had a great escape and we would not hesitate to re-book in the future.

Thank you for your great review. The cottages are certainly situated within easy reach of several spectacular beaches, with an outstanding coastline and conveniently placed for visiting most areas of Cornwall. Chapel Porth beach is awesome at low tide, with the derelict Engine Houses nestled in the cliffs.

A Special Place to Relax and Venture Out!
Beautiful location, friendly and helpful owners if you should need help, property well maintained and clean, perfect base for travelling around Cornwall, especially if you want to go to the nearby beaches which are stunning. A bakery is a few hundred yards on the right, a farm shop a few hundred yards on your left. If you like Cream Teas go to the right - get all you need including the nicest jam and Clotted cream which happens to also be made across the road from the bakery, then go left out of the drive if you want to get amazingly fresh Cornish pasties with steak (not mince) and enjoy authentic Cornwall! Then drive to Perranporth (a stone's throw really) and enjoy a real beach or go to the National Trust beach Chapel Porth. Really wish I could surf!

Comfortable, well equipped and pet-friendly accomodation
We had a wonderful holiday in this beautifully situated cottage. We found Tinners Cottage exceptionally clean, very comfortable and having everything needed for an enjoyable stay. Nearby Porthtowan beach (2 miles) is a lovely cove for an evening stroll on the sand, and Newquay, St Ives, Penzance and Fowey are all within easy reach by car. Tinners Cottage is an ideal base from which to explore this lovely part of the country and we found nothing about it we would have changed. A home away from home with good communication with the owner.

About the neighborhood
In the village, there is a Farm Shop supplying local Cornish produce, including Cornish pasties, meat for the BBQ and local gifts, well worth a visit and only 400 metres from the cottages. Chapel Porth beach is a must at low tide and a hedgehog ice cream from Robin's Café on the car park is very naughty but nice. Porthtowan beach is an excellent beach for children, swimmers and surfers alike. Lifeguards are on duty at our local beaches throughout the Summer season.
