Oh my goodness you will get the warmest welcome from the hosts, Keith and Louise, who are so kind and even gave us an Anniversary cake, card and Prosecco. Thanks again as it was the best. The apartment is immaculate and has everything you need and a wonderful view which I appreciated for hours too, watching seals bobbing up in the dock, swans on the estuary, the waves crashing round the lighthouse and spittal point, the fishing boats bringing in their catch and we even saw the tanker being filled with grain just like Keith had mentioned on Friday. The added bonus of binoculars in the apartment was brilliant too. I particularly loved all the quirky seaside and wildlife ornaments too.
As for our holiday it was beyond wonderful ... We arrived early so just parked at Spittal point and were amazed to be welcomed by dolphins jumping and splashing about before swimming off down the coast. Wow, wow, wow, what a way to start the weekend.
Second day included trip to Holy Island for a lovely meander and then off on one of Billy Shiels boat trips around the Farne Islands. Boat trip was defo worth £20 per head as we saw all the puffins, guillemots, razerbills, shags, artic terns, kittiwakes etc etc as well as seals and the grace darling lighthouse. Brilliant trip on a fabulous sunny day with crew who are so helpful.
Following day a little walk around Berwick and some historical walls, barracks etc. I never realized how big Berwick actually is until now. And then onto a lovely value for money Sunday lunch at Limoncello restaurant. Reviews on it were mixed but we had a lovely meal and great service. £7.95 per head for Sunday lunch with soup and a little ice cream or coffee included ... It's unbelievable in this day and age. Then a little drive to Eyemouth just up the coast where we fed a couple of seals (one is blind bless it) at the end of the harbour and saw the amazing Widows and Bairns sculpture that really touched my heart. Every woman and child on the sculpture is a widow or orphan from a historic storm where nearly 200 men lost their lives when they couldn't outsail the storm chasing them into the rocks. So so sad and the history of so many sailors over the years.
Then today it was a lovely slow drive home with a wee stop off at St Mary's Lighthouse near Tynemouth to blow the cobwebs from your hair ... Lol ... And breath in the wonderful sea air before going back to normality. Once again we were lucky enough to see 3 seals in the sea there too and a few sea birds inc shags and a kestrel hovering near the car park.
Brilliant holiday made so much better by a wonderful apartment and lovely hosts xxx hope we get to come back soon.
