What a relaxing week we've just had. Our first holiday in the Yorkshire Dales and we loved it. We went walking every day and really enjoyed exploring the local area. Cubble Head is full of character. The owners were kind and helpful when we arrived and provided a small hamper, and fresh flowers in the house. Facilities were good, and the location is awesome.

Hot weather first week and Winter wonderland second week
Wonderful time back at Cubble Head but first time when it has really snowed. The photos are amazing. The weather was like several seasons all in one day - snow blizzard and then beautiful sunshine. The dogs loved playing in the garden with all the snow. Despite the snow I was still able to get about as the farmers do a great job gritting the local roads. I wish that our council at home did the same. First week was like summer with people with shorts on round Aysgarth. As always the house was brilliant and welcome reception from Liz and Richard along with welcome hamper.

Fortnight in the Dales
Wonderful welcome by Liz and Richard as always with the wonderful scones. The Dales was its usual heavenly place with picturesque views in all directions from the farmhouse. Cannot wait to return next year. Three Horseshoes at Wensley provided excellent food and dog friendly.

Perfect holiday
Wonderful holiday and what panoramic scenery. The garden was perfect with 2 resident rabbits. Newborn lambs in surrounding fields. The welcome pack was so welcome. Everything in the house was ideal for a self catering holiday as it was definitely like being at home. Thanks to the owners for the use of their beautiful home. Ideal location to get about the area brilliant base. Wish I was still there

Beautiful cottage, amazing location
Couldn't be happier with our stay, even the weather was pleasant. Very well equipped cottage, well presented with a delightful welcome pack. Plenty of room for a family of 4 with well appointed bedrooms. Close to Hawes and spoiled for choice for beautiful walks in the area. Would definitely recommend.

Well located , full of character with lots of comfort inside
Lovely cottage with especially beautiful view at the rear end at the valley, fields and sheep. Old and charasteric on the outside and more modern and comfort on the inside. Well equipped with eg. kitchenutensils and lots of information about what to do in the environment. Liz and Richard take the trouble to welcome every new visitor on arrival ( though not living nearby) and tell about the house and give some recommendations what to do. A very well filled hamper was waiting for us together with selfbaked scones, fresh flowers in every room and chocolates near the beds. Lot to do in the environment. If you like to do some walking, like us: we drove along the Buttertubspass for a walk from Keld to Muker, to Hardraw, to the Aysgarth falls ( along the St Andrews church with the beautiful wooden screen saved from the Yervaulx Abbey, around Hubberholme ( and searched for the mousecarvings in the church),visited the Burtersett annual show, the Wensleydale cheesefactory and the ruins and teagarden at the Yervaul Abbey. We would especially recommend the walk near Malhalmcove ( taking the longer version which begins at Sinkpot carpark, near Malham tarn).

Very many thanks for this lovely review! Wherever possible, we do try to meet our guests on arrival and it was really good to meet you and your family to show you round the cottage and talk through some possibilities for walks and sightseeing.
We are delighted that you were able to use Cubble Head as a base to explore so much of beautiful Wensleydale and upper Wharfedale. We completely agree with your recommendations - these are all terrific places to visit and within very easy travelling distance from the cottage. The walk from Muker to Keld is a favourite of ours, as is the circuit of Malham that includes Janet's Foss and a scramble up Goredale Scar.
Many of our guests find that, with so much to do, a week is not nearly enough and we do hope that you, like others, will return to Cubble Head in the future for further exploring!

What Can I Say?
Quite simply superb!
As I stood in the middle of the paddock I listened to the gentle bleating of the sheep - that was all I could hear!
And when they stopped....nothing..absolutely nothing! This is heaven.
Liz and Richard were so accommodating, too, and a basket of goodies and wine awaited our arrival.
If it's peace and quiet and the heart of the Yorkshire Dales you want, this place cannot be beaten!

Something we love is that there is complete peace and quiet at Cubble Head and yet you are only 5 minutes by car from Hawes with shops, cafes, pubs and everything else you could hope for.
We look forward to welcoming you back!

'If paradise is half as nice' (Amen Corner)
As this was our 5th visit to Cubblehead you can imagine how much we love the place. Having stayed in many very good holiday cottages i can honestly say that none of them are of the same standard as Cubblehead.
The cottage is spacious, warm and welcoming and is very well equipped but that is only part of the story. The location of the cottage and the views surrounding it are truly magnificent and i can think of no better place to be

Very many thanks for this lovely review. We are delighted that you returned for your 5th visit and are so pleased that you love Cubble Head, as we do too! With such a fantastic setting and our panoramic views of Wensleydale, we have always tried to make the cottage a special place to be, inside and out.
"Who needs paradise, I'd rather have <Cubble Head>" With apologies to Amen Corner!!

Burtersett is a peaceful, timeless village, set on a slight hillside above the Wensleydale valley road. The name means high pasture and the fields around the village are still full of grazing sheep. The road through the village winds past pretty cottages and continues to Lake Semerwater, famed by geologists for its Ice Age relics and now enjoyed by canoeists and swimmers. Cubble Head is situated on the outskirts of Burtersett. From Burtersett, there is a lovely walk on a paved pathway through meadows to Hawes, about 1.5 miles away. The path was paved so that the Minister could walk from Hawes to the chapel in Burtersett without getting his robes muddy!Hawes is the highest market town in England and a place of real character. It has cobbled streets and a weekly street market. There are many small shops and several excellent pubs and cafes. The local sheep market is well worth a visit and there are other unique attractions such as the Dales tourist museum, a ropemaker, a working watermill and of course the world famous Wensleydale Creamery where real Wensleydale cheese is made 6 days a week. You can watch the cheese being made and then sample the results in the Creamery shop and cafe. The Pennine Way runs through Hawes and there are walks in every direction - along the river, up the hills, over to Swaledale. The famous 3 Peaks of Yorkshire (Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough) are just a short drive away.
Getting around
We recommend a car if you want to visit the many attractions in Wensleydale and Swaledale but it is perfectly possible to leave the car at the cottage and explore on foot. Hawes is close enough (1.5 miles on good paths) to walk for shopping and eating out.

How to get there
Cubble Head is easily accessible from the A1 and the M1.
From the A1, turn West at Bedale on to the A684 towards Leyburn and Hawes. Cubble Head is 26 miles - about 40 minutes drive from the A1 exit. This is a delightful drive along the scenic Wensleydale valley. There are a succession of pretty villages - many with real character and ancient chuches, village greens, attractive cottages etc. There are also lovely views to the opposite side of the valley and Castle Bolton. Many villages have a tea room or pub so there is no shortage of refreshment stops! Particularly good places for a break might be: Leyburn - 3 village squares, good shopping, plenty of tea rooms
West Witton - charming village with the famous Wensleydale Heifer gastro pub, Aysgarth- the well known triple waterfall is just off the main road. Tea rooms. Bainbridge - village green with stocks (!) , new Archimedes screw on the river, pub and tea room.
From the M6, turn East at Junction 37 on the A684 towards Sedburgh and Hawes. Cubble Head is 21 miles from the M6 junction - about 45 minutes drive. Again, this is a very scenic journey. The countryside is a little wilder and more dramatic than further east. You pass through Sedburgh, England's book town and this is a lovely place for a wander round with no shortage of tea shops, gift shops and, unsurprisingly, book shops. The Sedburgh fells provide a magnificent scenic backdrop to the town.
Further on, the road winds through hamlets and sheep fields and there are views to the north of Wild Boar Fell (where allegedly the last wild boar in England was killed). The Pennine scenery here is wild and spectacular and the road is delight to drive. As you climb higher and approach Hawes, you pass very close to the Settle-Carlisle railway which sometimes has steam trains. The road then winds through the hamlet of Appersett where there is an art gallery and finally into Hawes. Cubble Head is then just minutes away. Perhaps the most scenic route of all is along the B6265 north of Skipton.* This is a good route if you are coming from the Leeds area or the M62 but requires time and patience which will be amply rewarded. This route passes Rylstone, made famous by "Calendar Girls" and then just bypasses Grassington, a delightful village famed for its Arts festival and Linton where there is an ancient church. Soon the magnificent Upper Wharfedale valley opens out and you will pass the overhanging limestone cliff at Kilnsey and then wind through Kettlewell, Starbotton and Buckden. These are timeless Dales villages each with their own character. All have pubs and most have tearooms as well. At Buckden there is a choice - left along a very minor road called Oughtershaw Road or right towards Leyburn - a slightly longer route. Oughtershaw Road will take you past 'The George' at Hubberhulme, a pub which dates from 1600. Hubberhulme Church has pews made by mousyThompson - a Yorkshire joiner who carved his trademark mouse into everything he made.
You then wind along the river valley passing the ancient and wonderfully named hamlets of Yockenthwaite, Deepdale and Beckermonds. Look carefully and you will see a Bronze age stone circle on the right. The river here tumbles down limestone pavements and is a delight. Eventually you will emerge on Cam High Road which is a Roman Road directly above Hawes. Prepare for a very steep descent down to Hawes along Beggarman'Road! *Please note this route is not advisable if there is any risk of snow or ice and does require patience as much of it is single track with passing places.
The closest airport is Leeds Bradford - 50 miles away. Newcastle airport is 75 miles away and Manchester airport is 95 miles away.
The nearest ferry port is Hull - 115 miles.
