The Whitstable Tree House Retreat is a former Fisherman's cottage with some original and some additional features. The cottage has two original fire places and one exposed brick chimney breast. There is also Original artwork throughout, some paintings by the owner and also driftwood constructions by the previous owner who also designed and made a lot of the original fixtures and fittings in the house. She was also an avid collector of driftwood and beach flotsam which is a feature of the character of the south facing garden. The mature garden has two apple&pear trees and a fruitful vine which features throughout the seasons. The house is perfectly located close to the hub of Whitstable with Harbour street, the harbour and beaches all located within a few hundred yards of the front door. The house is also in a quiet street and would suit people who want a quieter kind of getaway and perhaps somewhere a bit different from the more modern and 'less characterful' property's which are available for holiday makers. The tree house retreat is full of charm and character. I would not recommend the house to family's with very young Children however(Especially under 8 yrs)as there are objects and features which are fragile and may cause problems if knocked into or over by smaller children.I would be happy to discuss these issues with parent's of young children who are thinking of renting the house.I cannot guarantee the safety of children in your care whilst staying at Whitstable tree house retreat but I can advise you if you are concerned about any potential concerns which you might have about the property and your stay.

Interaction with guestsIt is my policy to meet with Guests on arrival and give them a tour of the house.hand them the key for use during their stay and to offer informal suggestions of places to visit, places to eat and so on during your visit.I am also happy to leave you alone as soon as you arrive but by nature I am a sociable person and am happy answer questions about the house and about Whitstable! I have been a resident here since 1993 and visited regularly as my mother also lived here.It is a charming place and I am happy to share some of it's secrets with you! On odd occasions when I am unable to greet guests personally I will always arrange for a Key Collection point or for a friend to meet you instead.

Peaceful and personal Whitstable retreat house
Very special little cottage with great character and charm. The owner provides personal touches on arrival; fresh flowers; fresh bread and jam for breakfast. Very comfortable beds and bed linen; beautiful clarity of light in the rooms with very thoughtful and engaging choice of art and objects to be found wherever you look. There is a lovely winding garden with an enchanting and poetic quality. Altogether it is a quiet and perfect place for reflection, for reading and relaxing and a short distance from the sea (and from any amenities you might need; everything is close at hand). Highly recommended.

A unique experience among the art
The Tree House retreat is slap bang in the centre of town so handy for absolutely everything. All the rooms and the garden are packed full of art - a mix of original paintings and lots of quirky found objects that could look quite odd if they had not been wonderfully curated to give a totally original look and feel. The kitchen is full of everything you could need, the sofas and chairs are comfy and arranged to give you space to have good conversations and the beds have great quality bed linen and are cosy and comfortable. The garden is perfect for an end of the day drink. Being there inspired me to go home and do some more creative stuff myself. What more could you ask of a holiday rental?

Perfect location
This lovely cottage is in a perfect location, very close to all Whitstable's pubs, restaurants and shops. It is on a side street away from the main street, however, and although there is a pub a few doors down , that closes early so it's a quiet location. The owner is very helpful and welcoming. He communicates well before you arrive and swiftly answers any questions. He's also there when you arrive and takes the time to show you around the house and explain the heating, appliances etc. The fresh flowers in every room are a lovely touch, as are the fresh bread, eggs, milk and butter provided when you arrive. This property has wonderful garden, which is an outstanding example of what you can do in a small space. The house itself is charming and full of character but quite eccentric, certainly not for lovers of minimalism! It is extremely clean. The bedrooms and reception rooms are comfortable, light and airy. At the risk of appearing uncultured, I'll admit that i would have liked there to have been a TV. On a beautiful summer weekend where we were walking and socialising, it really didn't matter, but it would be a disadvantage on a cold winter week away. The kitchen is well equipped and tea and coffee are provided, but there's not much work space. The bathroom does not have a shower and the mixer tap over the bath isn't effective (either scalding hot or very cold). Running several baths isn't great for the environment or for getting out of the house in a timely fashion, but I believe this will be changed for next season. Because there's no shower or separate toilet, I think the house would be best suited to 3-4 adults. Overall this is a unique and distinctive property that lovers of art and antiques will love.

Dear Liz, thank you very much for your generous review& I take into account your preferences for a Television&possibly a shower by Next season. I did not realise that the hand shower was either scolding or cold. It should be a mixer tap which I will also investigate.Thank you for you honest& objective feedback& I appreciate the time you have taken in doing this. I am glad that your overall experience was positive. Kind regards, John

Peaceful art filled cottage
We were made to feel very welcome by John, the cottage was a delight to stay in. All the beds were comfortable for us (family of four). Tree house retreat is very near the harbour and Whitstable restaurants and shops. We had a sunny lunch on the shingle beach seating area at the Neptune pub, a walk along the coast and viewed the many interesting shops and art galleries/spaces. Croissants, coffee, milk, butter, tea were kindly provided. The interior of the house is interestingly filled with art and creative ideas.

Perfect seaside pad with bags of character
The owner of this unique little house (John) was very warm & welcoming. The artwork, along with his collection of driftwood scattered through the house makes for a special place with bags of character. Ideally located 2 mins from the high street & the beach. Lovely bread, good coffee & home made jams made us smile. Thanks John :) The only reason I haven't given this review 5 stars is that we later found it much cheaper on Air BnB, of which John was not aware & very kindly reimbursed us some cash. So, definitely stay here but definitely book through Air BnB & spend your savings on a meal at the Whitstable Oyster Company restaurant on the beach, or pints in the Old Neptune or Black Dog, super cosy local pubs.

It is True that both Liz and I discovered that booking her trip through holiday lettings was more expensive than Air bnb. I have however amended prices now which I hope will even out the extent of the price gap between the two agencies. It was a slight oversight by me that certain charges are more on Trip advisor holiday lettings. As i had used the same prices to customers on both sites I had assumed this was the overall price to guests and not before commissions.I hadn't adjusted the 'Extra costs' on both Sites to match up either and so this was higher on Holiday Lettings. These are now the same on both Sites. I have also adjusted certain costs on Air bnb to even the prices out so hopefully customers will be paying similar amounts through either agency now! I would put this down to a teething problem for which I am grateful to Liz for pointing out. Hopefully no future guests will have such problems arising. I am also grateful to Liz for her generous Review of her stay nonetheless. Thanks Liz

Attention to detail in an art filled home from home
John could not have been a better host. With good communication before we arrived, we waited two minutes before he came along to let us in, his arms full of goodies for us to eat which we had for a late supper and for breakfast with his home made preserves. Very unexpected and very thoughtful. His beautiful art all over the house made from flotsam and jetsam was very individual and gave a real seaside feel good ambience to the whole house. The little garden was also beautiful and we could imagine sitting out there in the summer. The house was decorated for Christmas with a very clever Christmas tree arrangement. The house was very cosy and spotless and could not have been better positioned, just a couple of minutes from the centre of town and from the sea. The house has no TV which we did not want but some might. If you want all mod cons and sharp lines then this is not for you. However, if you want a peaceful retreat in a beautifully thought out, cosy, pristine, welcoming, comfortable, convenient little home from home with a warm and thoughtful host, this is the place for you. This house is filled with love and we loved it - we will certainly be back.

Gorgeous holiday home right by the harbour
I stayed Whitstable Tree House Retreat in August this year (2016) the owner, John, could not have been more helpful and friendly. He kept me a parking space and left a bottle of prosecco in the fridge. As I was one of the first guests he bent over backwards to make my stay comfortable and dropped croissants off one morning. The cottage is gorgeous, so quirky and comfy. A real home from home and completely spotless. The kitchen is fully equipped and artworks adorn the walls. It is literally one minute from the beach, high street and harbour. I highly recommend this cottage for couples, or small groups.

About the neighborhood
There are many good quality and recommended Independent and some chain Restaurants very near to my House. These Include Award Winning Royal Native Oyster Stores,Wheelers(Michelin Star)The Sportsman(at Siasalter also award winning)A host of highly thought of Pubs and other Restaurants Include The Duke(Live Music Venue)and food at The Stables. The Pearson's Arms Gastro Pub, Restaurant. Samphire and birdies both popular with locals and visitors.A new Tapas and The Deli for lighter meals with a good ambience!Jones's the oldest and bastes Fish'n'Chips in town and plenty of other's.Other Pub's include my Local (5 doors from house)The new Inn,real friendly local. The Black Dog a great micro pub and The Ship Centurion with great 'proper bar food'!
Getting around
Canterbury within 7 miles and a good bus ride from Whitstable. You can buy a Rover ticket too if you want to Explore East Kent by Bus.As far as Folkestone and Ramsgate are possible but personally if you want to go to Thanet use the train which also goes around the coast to Deal and Folkestone as well. The station is 10 mins walk away and the train are twice an hour.
Access
Car not needed
How to get there
Finding Whitstable Is not difficult either by Train,Road or Bus but Parking and Traffic can be a problem.Especially at w/ends!There is On-street parking outside or nearby but it is for anyone to park(not residential in other words). So you have to hope for a space nearby anytime you drive in.I can advise on Car Parks which are numerous and the biggest long stay car park is very close to the house at Morrell tank(approx 2 mins walk). On occasion I might even be able to reserve an on-street space for you by parking there myself before you arrive and then moving for you to park!
