We have just stayed at Japonica Cottage for 4 nights. It is a comfortable, well appointed, partially thatched cottage. It was clean with a welcome pack on arrival.
Located on a narrow lane, there is off-road parking, a large garden with summer house, and is less than 5 minutes walk from the excellent Oak Inn and New Forest walks. Well recommended.

Wonderful stay at Japonica Cottage
This is our fourth visit to the cottage in 12 years and the cottage and gardens provide a wonderful holiday experience in the New Forest. The tradtional chocolate box cottage is excellently complimented by a 3 room extension which hosts a living/bedroom, twin room and modern bathroom. We utilised all 4 rooms during our stay as there were 8 adults staying and it accommodated us all with no problems. The kitchen and down stairs utility room provides more than enough kitchen space and there is plenty of fridge/freezer space to meet the needs of a large family.
The service from New Forest Holiday lets was attentive and very helpful. A wonderful stay again and I am sure we will be back again. Thank you.

Perfect Cottage - very pet-friendly!
This is the perfect cottage for enjoying the New Forest with a dog. Conveniently located near Lyndhurst, there are dozens of beautiful walks within 15 minutes drive, but you can also just walk 5 min down the road to a beautiful, part of the forest with lots of paths.
The old part has a large and a smaller bedroom with a bathroom; kitchen and sitting room with dining area. All very cozy and lovely.
The newer add-on has a large bedroom, a large bathroom and a large sitting room. Slightly less cozy :-) but very convenient.
Two things are particularly brilliant for dogs: there is a very large garden that is fully fenced in; and when you come in from the garden, you enter the kitchen and it has a heated stone floor. This means you can easily wipe the doggies feet in a warm towel, when it's a bit wet outside :-)
There is also a pub just up the road which is dog-friendly and serves really good food at reasonable prices.
The owners are friendly and helpful.
I couldn't think of a better place to spend a week in the New Forest, especially if you're bringing a dog.

Thank you for your review - you are quite right, Japonica Cottage and its garden is doggy heaven. Its so lovely to be able to walk from a property into the forest without the need of a car and this is one of the things Japonica offers - plus the pub of course! So glad you enjoyed your cosy autumnal stay.

Lovely place
We stayed here with seven friends on a cycling break. Beautiful cottage, clean, and tastefully furnished. Ideal central location for excursions to New Forest, Isle of Wight, or Cranborne Chase. Friendly and helpful manager. Highly recommended.

Wow, wonderful cottage
Located on a quiet lane, detached with fabulous garden you feel a million miles from everyone but actually only a short drive to all the New Forest areas of interest. The furnishings and kitchenware are of a very high standard, the house whilst having all the benefits of a modern home retains so many original features a real fairytale cottage, I and my family are eager to return.

We had the most wonderful week staying in this beautiful cottage, extremely well equipped and home from home and filled with barrels of character and charm. We had fabulous weather which meant we could enjoy the large garden. The property was in a lovely peaceful area too. Will be returning.

The New Forest lies to the west of Southampton Water in south-west Hampshire and covers 37,677 hectares. Centuries of human management and livestock grazing have meant that the forest is a combination of heathland, ancient woodland, wetlands and grassy plains, with many enclosures of both coniferous and deciduous woodland. The commoners’ ponies and cattle roam freely across the forest, controlling and shaping the vegetation as they graze.
‘New Forest’, or ‘Nova Foresta’, was created by William the Conqueror as a royal hunting ground, and forest laws were enforced to protect the hunted animals and their habitats. These strict laws ensured that the hunting of deer and wild boar remained the closely guarded privilege of the King and his followers.
Over the centuries, deer hunting became less important, and by the 17th and 18th centuries timber production was the primary economic use of the New Forest. The New Forest Acts came into force, and areas were fenced off to protect young saplings from the grazing animals. It wasn’t until the Act of 1877 that two thirds of the forest were set aside for commoners to exercise their traditional rights.
Deer populations were left unmanaged until the 19th century when they reached levels that threatened the timber crops and competed with the commoners’ stock for food. The Deer Removal Act was established in 1851 and it was resolved that all deer were to be removed. Although total removal was not achieved, the numbers did reduce dramatically, and the Forestry Commission's keepers continue to keep these numbers under control today.
Recreation is important in the New Forest and with a large proportion of the forest being Crown land, access to the greater part is open and free to all. Local users and visitors from farther afield regularly enjoy participating in a wide range of recreation activities including horse-riding, dog walking and cycling.
Bank is a small village on the outskirts of Lyndhurst and is in the heart of the New Forest National Park. Lyndhurst has a variety of shops and eating places and the New Forest Visitor Centre.
