Matchbox appeals to all ages and can provide the perfect holiday for the active and also for those looking for a quiet retreat.
Matchbox is large enough for 4 people , with separate dining and living rooms, gardens front and rear. The cottage is ideally situated close enough (a few hundred metres!) to the town to wander to, but located at the edge of some of the best walks in the Peaks.
Featured in Good Homes magazine, Matchbox has been recently redecorated and refurbished throughout with Farrow and Ball paints, new furniture and curtains creating a warm and welcoming feel. Wirksworth truly is the Jewel of the Peak; a great town with pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars, with plenty of curiosity shops, a lead-mining museum tucked away, a steam railway and not a single high-street brand (other than the 2 banks). Should you choose to, you can get all you need from the town for your week away without using the car. Carsington Water and other attractions are only a short cycle or drive away, with major towns and attractions just a stone's throw (Bakewell, Buxton, Ashbourne, Chatsworth House, even Alton Towers for the brave). The leisure centre has a pool and a climbing wall.
Those in the know, return to Wirksworth annually for the month-long September arts festival and Well-dressing in June.
The recent redecoration has sparked some interest and some questions...the answer is Farrow and Ball paints throughout. Colours used: Stony Ground Modern Emulsion for most walls, with Lime White eggshell for doors, skirting and window frames. Feature rooms are Main bedroom, painted in Pigeon Estate Emulsion, the bathroom in Elephant's Breath emulsion and Brinjal eggshell for the bath. We have also just added wifi internet access.More

Thank you! Delighted to have helped bring more people to Wirksworth!
A cosy cottage, nicely decorated with a fabulous free standing bath and confortable master bedroom. The cottage was spotlessly clean and had everything that we needed for our stay. Wi-fi throughout. Parking was never an issue despite no allocated parking - the road the cottage...More
Loved our stay here, wonderful cottage in a great place. Every thing we could possibly need! Easy access to restaurants and shops. Loved the log burner and the garden. Very clean and well cared for. Can't wait to stay again.
This was our second trip to Matchbox Cottage and it did not disappoint. We love where it is situated so easy to reach most of the attractions that the Dales has to offer.
The cottage was comfortable and very clean. Probably the best equipped place...More
Had a lovely stay at the Matchbox.
Clean and comfortable.
Good base to explore Derbyshire.
Had fun climbing and parking up the hill but hey you are in the Dales.
Thanks love to come back another time.
We decided to stay at Matchbox cottage because of the lovely gushing reviews that we read. Although the cottage was very clean and comfortable , we noriced that everything was very tired and shabby.
As we were lucky enough to have good weather and would...More

We have given the garden furniture a good clean (none of it is...More
A leaflet we picked up recently in the town (produced by the Wirksworth Civic & History Society) mentions the following features...
- The Puzzle Gardens; a higgledey-piggledey collection of houses perched on the steep hillside above the Dale, and linked by a maze of footpaths.
- The Wirksworth Fetival (September annually) including my favourite Art & Architecture weekend where around 70 homes open their doors to the public to show off their architecture, features, or as galleries for local artists and sculptors.
- The High Peak Trail (start at Middleton Top); cycle or walk for up to 30 miles along this trail. (cycles can be hired from the Middleton Top visitor centre)
- The National Stone Centre (great for Children's activities)
- Wirksworth Leisure Centre (at Anthony Gell School) - in...
