Longthwaite Farmhouse

Rental Home -
4 Bedrooms , 2 Bathrooms , Sleeps 9
Borrowdale, Keswick, Lake District, Cumbria, England
Longthwaite Farmhouse is a traditional, seventeenth century farmhouse with many of the original interior features retained and restored. Nestling in the beautiful Borrowdale valley, the heart of the Lake District, its front windows look out towards Watendlath Fell and its garden runs down to the River Derwent - with endless paddling, dam building and swimming opportunities along the river.
Longthwaite is very much the simple family holiday home - we do not have a TV, Wi-Fi, freezer or dishwasher. The house's unique location makes it a perfect base for walkers and climbers as it offers immediate access by foot to the best loved Lakeland peaks: Scafell, Great Gable, the Langdale Pikes and Buttermere fells.
Great on and off road cycling routes and access to both rowing and sailing on nearby Derwentwater ensures that there is something... Read more

Absolutely loved our time there. The house was lovely. The wildlife in abundance. The farm was the interest of the week. 2500 Hardwick getting sheared. Beautiful place.

About the neighborhood
Borrowdale is the heart of the Lake District. From the house you have direct access to the Buttermere fells, the Central fells including the Gables, Scafell Pike and the Langdale Pikes. You can walk to Grasmere to visit Wordsworth's birthplace, drive or take the bus to visit the Honister slate mines and try their via ferrata, or wander up small streams for picnics and bathing in the many beautiful rock pools. In June and July the days are so long you can be out on the hills until 10pm with excellent visibility. Later in the year is the time for the agricultural shows in Borrowdale and further afield. Witness the excitement of the fell racing and hound trails, the ancient rituals of Cumberland wrestling and terrier races.Details of all these events are to be found on the Cumbria and Kes... more
Getting around
There is a good bus service up and down the valley. The direct bus to Keswick takes about 20 minutes, there is a more scenic route over Honister pass and though Buttermere village. Day saver and family tickets are available. Look at the Stagecoach timetable online. There is also a good ferry that goes round Derwentwater several times daily - you can hop on and off during the day.

How to get there
Railway: Penrith or Windermere: 28.0 mi
By car come into the Lake District from the south via Windermere or North via Penrith. Take the road to Keswick and then the B5289 Borrowdale road for about 8 miles south of Keswick. About half a mile after the village of Rosthwaite, turn right into the lane that is signed to the Youth Hostel - the Farmhouse is about 400m down this lane, over a small bridge and immediately on the right - it is the only house once you cross the bridge and you cannot go any further. Be more relaxed and take the train to Penrith or Windermere and then by bus to Keswick. Change here at the bus station outside Booths supermarket (good place for a meal and use the Wi-Fi if you have time to wait) to get the local bus up the Borrowdale valley. Ask for the stop for the Longthwaite YHA - the house is about 400m from... more
