This is a very cool spot - the caboose is a great place to stay with fun touches and you can see buffalo from the caboose. We also got to ride a miniature horse and feed goats during the stay. There's a cool playground that was a little hike to get to so we had it to ourselves, as well as a game room. Cheryl is nice and responsive. The only reason for the knock on the rating is that we had a really disappointing experience with the train room. Ahead of our trip, I called to discuss options and activities and ask what COVID precautions were being taken. I was told that staff wear masks and so felt comfortable doing a pony ride and going to the model train room. However the employee running the train room wouldn't put on a mask even after I asked and wouldn't let me prop open the door. It's a small room and I didn't feel comfortable having my entire family in there with someone who wasn't following CDC guidelines and the NC mandate. He told me 'I don't wear those things' and so we left. When you book with Buffalo Creek, you even get a reminder email that NC requires masks and to please bring / wear your mask. Why wouldn't they expect the same of their staff? When I informed Cheryl, she offered a refund but did not offer an apology, a change of employee, or to ask the employee to put on a mask. It is a super cool room and my kids loved it and cried when I took them out since the employee wouldn't wear a mask. When on vacation, I don't want to confront someone about a mask - it made me really uncomfortable to even ask and disappointed at the response. I don't think staying in a hotel should be political but clearly they don't care since they have a MAGA flag and don't wear masks even when asked.

My grandson loves trains and animals. This was the perfect place for him to visit! We had an awesome time. The caboose was perfect! They even opened up the gift shop just for him so he could purchase a souvenir! We will be visiting again!

This place is awesome. Great place for kids to see the buffalo and lots of animals to include chickens, llamas, and goats. Best part was staying in an actual caboose! Kids were thrilled. Owners were excellent and very accommodating. They quickly responded to all my requests. Overall, excellent place to stay.

We spent 2 nights here and the place was amazing. We arrived while it was still daylight so we were able to see the mini goats, mini donkey and horses...not to mention the llamas! Staying in the caboose was such an amazing experience. The bed was so comfortable. It was immaculate. Then, to top it all off, I left the blind open during the night and woke up to looking out of the window, gazing at the buffalo. I didn’t want to get up. O kept thinking how lucky I was to be in such a great place and how often does one wake up to a view of bison first thing in the morning? Beautiful and majestic creatures! Everyone there went out of their way to make sure our needs were met. They were all so pleasant. I love that Cheryl keeps you informed the whole time and then we received a text from Jenni inviting us for some warm fresh apple cider straight from the local orchard upon our arrival and I have to say, it was the best apple cider I have ever tasted coming from someone who isn’t much of a cider drinker. We spent 2 days there and were saddened to leave. We will definitely return next year and bringing some friends to stay with us in one of their beautiful cabins. Thank you, Cheryl for a wonderful and amazing experience! We will return and next time, we will stock up on bison meat. It was so good. It’s hard to get any from where we live. Thank you again, Shay

Pros: Great area, it was beautiful. The area was about a 15 minute drive from Cataloochee skiing and town. The caboose we stayed in had a unique charm as the buffalo could be seen outside the windows. On the ranch there were several other properties and livestock. There was a few hiking trails accessible to the guests and one playground for the kids. Cons: Extra hidden costs, (i.e) $5 per trash bag. The front was closed from 12/24-12/26. We ran out of toilet paper. Would not recommend bringing pets, the property owner Cheryl will not be as charming after checkout. Cheryl left a great review on Airbnb about our stay with them. Then the next day claimed that the guests after us refused to stay in caboose because of fur from the dogs, however paid $100 dog fee + $35 cleaning fee. Also accused us of having three dogs, not true. Agreed on two (70lbs) dogs prior to arrival. Before we were so excited to come back and visit. After checkout it left a sour experience. Btw don’t even ask for anything left behind. Just an FYI: Cheryl’s messages: it’s $15 for left items + shipping. Also counteroffer exempted for just shipping which was $13 for two dog jackets. Please review the photos. Cheryl is the only one during this vacation who had an issue. The review from Cheryl was great and then the $75 charge was sent. I will stat that I counteroffered and only paid $57. The reason can been seen the photos and messages.

Thanks for taking time to leave a review. The county trash is 1.5 miles from property, we only ask you to leave $5 per bag if you don't want to drop if off when you pass it when you leave the property. We chose not to have a large dumpster on the property to attract animals & smell, since the county trash receptacle is close & convenient. I am sorry, our store was closed for Christmas, but if you needed anything all you had to do was call, as we have 24 hour maintenance folks on the property. All our info states we provide starter paper products-which is 3 rolls of TP per bathroom. I was being generous & only charged for 1 dog, then I found out all the dogs were on the beds, couches & hair was ALL over the caboose. The doggie coats that were left were found in the kitchen drawer & there was dog hair all over the utensils & everything had to be rewashed. To clarify, You only pd a $50 pet fee then the $57 after the counter offer which included shipping of your dog jackets. The extra money was for a cleaner to go back in & deep clean the entire caboose & wash the comforters & sheets another time to get rid of the dog hairs.

We only had one night to stay, wish it could have been longer. Stayed in the orange train car. The car is stylish and comfortable. They managed to provide everything you need in the space of a tiny house. Loved waking up to buffalo across the way and seeing the alpacas, goat, mini horse and more! Some roads up there are not paved and can get steep but we didn’t have any trouble getting around in our SUV. I saw others with a sedan who got around ok. Plan on wearing shoes that you can hike in or don’t mind getting a little dirty. It had rained before we got there and was muddy in spots- but of course that is to be expected! There’s a trail through the woods to a playground for the kids as well. Overall had a great time, wish it could have been longer. Beautiful there

The caboose exceeded any and all of our expectations. Even though it was a single caboose, it was very roomy and extremely comfortable. Both myself and my wife enjoyed the buffalo.

What a great trip. You can tell that the owners really put their hearts into the renovation of the caboose. Great attention to detail. It has everything you could need for a great stay. On top of that you can look out the window and watch buffalo grazing in the next pasture just a few feet away. So unique, you just have to come and experience it for yourself. Highly recccomend.

I wanted to take my kids on a vacation that was different than are usual beach trip and this was absolutely perfect! Not only did the kids think the caboose was “the coolest thing ever” but the hiking trail was like a mini zoo. We were able to watch the bison feedings, hold the baby goats, and the rest of the hike was beyond amazing, featuring a park, giant tire swing, and a gorgeous view of the mountains from the top! I would recommend Buffalo Creek Vacations to families, friends, or couples! We will definitely be visiting again!
