Region: Cornwall's visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain's premier holiday destinations.
Town: The small Cornish village of Upton Cross was originally home to miners but is now a quiet retreat and situated in beautiful countryside on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Visitors to the area will find a traditional 17th century pub serving food, a general store and a Post Office.
(shame about the weather, 4 days of dense fog).
The cottage is lovely, well but simply furnished and very clean. The beds were very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, and the WiFi & selection of games a bonus given the weather. The bathroom is very basic. Plenty of local walks for the dog. We had concerns that it would be cold given the lack of central heating but that was never the case & the wood burners worked (too) well. The roads to the cottage are narrow and you have to be able to be skilled at reversing! Peaceful, tranquil, cosy all apply, so could isolated.
We would definitely recommend the cottage but suggest that you check out summer months.
Challenge the value for money, we've stayed in remote country cottages for many years over the October half term and in our opinion we overpaid by £100 ~ £150 for the week.

A cosy, quiet and pretty retreat
My wife and I stayed here in the first week of March 2014. We had chosen it as we were looking for a dog-friendly cottage in Cornwall and this seemed to fit the bill perfectly, with a dedicated garden.
Given its rather secluded location, it is essential that you contact the owners on arrival at the local village to let them meet you at a rendezvous point and guide you to the property itself, down some tight and winding (typically Cornish) lanes. (You would definitely have difficulty finding it on your own in the dark !!) This arrangement worked perfectly.
The setting is beautiful and tranquil (even in March) and well away from other properties – except for the owners themselves who live in a detached cottage next door. This is however not an issue, as they do not bother you, and we barely saw them or heard them the whole week.
Parking is tight and at times a little awkward, as only a small space is available for one vehicle. We were expecting some friends to stay, and could have managed with 2 cars, but it would have been cramped. If you have a large vehicle (our is a Vauxhall Zafira which was just OK) I would suggest you talk to the owners beforehand.
The cottage itself was lovely with 2 good sized double bedrooms and a small third bedroom with twin beds – fine for children. One bathroom upstairs with bath, shower etc. There are 2 reception rooms with a wood burning stove in each – an initial generous supply of wood is provided, but if you make regular use of them, you will need to buy more – plenty of local shops stock suitable firewood.
This is an old cottage (1800s I believe) and displays all the quirks and character one should expect – uneven stone floors, narrow steep stairs and a propensity towards damp/condensation. None of this in any way affected us - in fact it enhanced its charm, but just be aware if you are expecting something more modern.
There is no telephone service in the property (there is Wi-Fi) and mobile service is difficult – although we did manage to get ours working by hanging out of the bedroom window.
Anna (the owner) showed us over the cottage on arrival, with a cheerful fire already burning in the living room, and tea service laid out – complete with chocolate cake and fresh flowers. What a lovely greeting, especially given the Cornish drizzle at the time.
There is plenty to do in the area, with visits to the coast, as well as Bodmin Moor almost on the doorstep – great for dogwalking or just hiking.
We had a great week, apart from some indifferent weather at times, but what do you expect in Cornwall in March ! Even the dog behaved himself. Many thanks to Anna for a truly wonderful stay. We will be back !

The true delights of a magical cottage.
A well presented cottage which had all the facilities of modern day living, but was remote, tranquil and very cosy.
