The Arapawa homestead, or Gunyah as it is also known, is the original house built in 1945 by Joe and Patty Perano as their retirement home. Refurbished in keeping wth the original 1940s character, the homestead is a fully equipped, private and cosy home-away-from-home. Gunyah sleeps up to 14 people and includes a fold-out bed and a cot for families with a younger child. The front bedroom is furnished with an antique walnut bedroom suite that includes a double bed with feather duvet and a single bed for an extra guest. Warm and pleasant, this room offers dramatic views of Tory Channel and the West Head. Suitable for children and visiting friends, the second bedroom contains two sets of single bunks with duvets. The sleep-out also doubles as a laundry and is equipped sinks, washing machine and clothes dryer. The sleep-out also has a spacious wooden deck that catches the afternoon sun. The bathroom inside the house has a comfortable bath, from which you can admire an etched glass depiction of the Tory Channel entrance showing both an underwater scene and a view of whalers above the water. The bathroom has a separate toilet. Gunyah has full amenities with all you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen contains a number of modern appliances, including a microwave oven, fridge/freezer and bread maker, and the living area has a wood burner, a TV and a sound system to play your mobile devices from. There is an additional small fridge in the sleepout. Guests who stay up in Gunyah can view the never-ending stream of ferries that travel past Gunyah along their route from Picton to Wellington, and vice versa. The entertainment of hearing and seeing the ferries travel past, close enough to wave out at the people on deck, is only an added bonus to the Arapawa Experience.More

Staying at Arapawa was a fantastic and truly unique experience! We were a family of twelve staying at the beach cottage. It was a fantastic set up for six kids and six adults. The kids didn’t watch TV or go on their gadgets the entire stay. We watched from the deck the kids swimming, fishing and playing on the beach. We enjoyed walks to the whaling station and around the farm. We learnt so much from the whole Raddon family! This was a unique and true getaway! We all just loved it, thankyou Raddons!

In the Queen Charlotte sounds, 1hour ferry ride from Picton you will find Arapawa homestead. The 5 of us stayed very comfortably in Colonsey House (which sleeps 12), with its turn of last century-inspired decor and memorabilia of the island's whaling heydays. The kitchen however has had a modern makeover with 5 cooktop gas burner and large oven. Antonia and Mike's are welcoming; the blue 'pearls' from their paua farm are so beguiling and unique we purchased several pieces. Phone and internet coverage could be obtained by walking 10minutes up the hill - or ignoring it totally to unplug the whole family. This place worked its magic on the children- instead of begging for screen-time they would wake up early to beachcomb for 'treasures', forage, collect tadpoles from watering troughs, feed the pet eels in the creek. There is a 30minute walk to the old whaling station, and a 2.5hour loop walk around the property with views of the sounds as well as their pine plantation and rolling hills. Its calm waters, while a cool 19degrees, held in it spectacular underwater kelp 'gardens' of blues, pinks and purples. Of an evening we released most of our catch - reeling in more than we could eat. I wasn't going to write this review as I wished to keep it a secret unspoilt hideaway. But now I've let the cat out of the bag...

It was more than a pleasure to have you come and visit our little piece of New Zealand paradise. We appreciate your review and I hope the children can still remember there time-out here at Arapawa Homestead. Happy Fathers Day tomorrow! Thanks again and Mike sends his best. Have a brilliant weekend:-)))
