Peaks Island, Maine
Start with an idyllic island. Put a fabulous cottage on it near the beach. Add a few wonderful people. Mix in a few gorgeous sunsets, gentle breezes, and fresh seafood dinners. Now you've just concocted the perfect vacation.
Your paradise on Peaks Island is a very short walk to the beach (less than a block) and it has an extra large lot for playing in the yard. This beautifully renovated 3 bedroom house (2 rooms with queen sized beds, one with twin bunk beds, and a pull out sofa in living room, max 6 adults) comes with a fantastic front porch for old-fashioned entertaining, and a back deck great for sunning and star gazing. It's an easy walk from the ferry, and to the island's restaurants---unless you decide to enjoy dinner on that large deck out back which is right off the kitchen. And if you want lobster you can ge...

The rental has all you'd need. Kitchenware, etc. Nice wraparound porch and we spend a lot of time out there. The glider chair on the porch needs to be repaired. It is very weak and almost brokewhen one sat on it.
I would also say that the beds/mattresses could use an updating. Our family didn't sleep that well at all. One bed was platform only and it was like a rock and my daughter likes firm.
The island is a mix between very updated and not at all. this one is in the middle. Cottagey(sp?) with some updates.
Owner was welcoming and easy to work with. She offered a short rental for our family wedding stay at the end of summer. Very helpful to us!

Nice older house, spacious, modern kitchen, huge front wraparound porch, rear deck off the kitchen, sleeps eight.

Easy walk to town center, close to Casco Bay, pleasant tree lined roads.

On the minus side, guests are not allowed to use the house's fireplace, or even light a candle; the house lacks the artwork and local seashore memorabilia common to many Peaks Island houses we have rented in the past. the layout of some rooms seemed a trifle odd (dining room and kitchen). Bathtubs were a little hard to climb into and out of. Kind of dangerous (no grab bars). The gas grill in back yard had an empty tank the day we arrived. We didn't use it and did not pay to have it filled for the next guests.

Although we don't go to Maine to watch TV, having a set and maybe a DVD player might have been a good idea for guests with kids.

About the neighborhood
Peaks Island is a scenic 20 minute ferry ride from downtown Portland, Maine. The ferry ride begins your transformation from mainland mode to island---relaxation---mode. Suddenly you no longer have to worry about traffic, you become more aware of your senses as you see the sights of Casco Bay, as you feel and smell the cool sea breezes, and when you hear the minute warning blast of the ferry---you'll know you are just about to begin an amazing island experience. Peaks Island is a very popular choice for weddings, with two venues located very close to the ferry. Centennial beach is less than a block from the house and perfect for watching sunsets, or keeping cool on a warm summer day. The island's perimeter road beckons island visitors to bicycle and walk it (or golf cart it) wi... more
