On September 28, 2022, Hurricane Ian, a massive, Category 4 storm slammed into Sanibel with 155mph winds and a 13ft storm surge that swept across Seagull Estates and Enchanted Cottage, uprooting trees and flooding our living spaces. Incredibly, our building remained standing, albeit water-logged. From tragedy, comes opportunity. We are using this unique opportunity to reimagine and upgrade our Cottage's living spaces. When restoration is completed, certainly by Fall 2023, Enchanted Cottage will be graced with new, wood-look, vinyl plank flooring throughout, all-new kitchen cabinets, a more ergonomic kitchen layout with more storage area, and beautifully redesigned, en-suite bathrooms. Our Cottage will also have new furniture throughout. The ambiance will be brig...Please bear with us! Our resident wildlife, the flocks of White Ibis and other wading birds, will have an even lovelier water feature to meander through. Our community, Seagull Estates is similarly taking the opportunity to redesign and upgrade the community clubhouse, pool and tennis courts. They have already resumed holding regular TGIF get-togethers, with food, beverages and conversation. Once in residence, guests are welcomed in as part of the community, and can join in such gatherings and activities. Sanibel itself is recovering and rebuilding. Restaurants, shops, and sites of interest, including "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, have, or will soon, reopen. The shorebirds have returned to Sanibel in record numbers. New vegetation is sprouting everywhere, and the City of Sanibel is hard at work re-planting. Sanibel will once again have its iconic tree-canopy. Roads and bike-hike paths are being restored. As soon as Enchanted Cottage is restored, we will be delighted to invite you to find serenity surrounded by nature in our Enchanted Cottage, a 2-plus-bedroom, 2 bathroom Gulf-green home in Seagull Estates, on the prettiest street on Sanibel's quiet West End. Our cottage is close to West Gulf Drive, a leisurely stroll away from our shell-sand beach on the Gulf of Mexico, via Seagull Estates' private beach-access path. Step through the French doors of the shell-pink master bedroom to greet the sunrise on the expansive (50-foot-wide) rear lanai, the Floridian-Hawaiian term for porch. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast al fresco, surrounded by lush landscaping. As part of the Seagull Estates community, you can take a swim in our community pool, or play tennis on one of our newly upgraded courts. You can walk down our private beach-path to bask in the sun or go combing for treasures on our shell-strewn Gulf Beach. Or take a scenic bike ride along 25 miles of bike-hike, shared-use paths, one passing just two houses from your home-away-from-home. Toast the sunset on the beach (or from the front lanai). Join your Seagull Estates neighbors for a convivial evening of drinks and hors d'oeuvres at the clubhouse. About the neighborhood

Enchanted Cottage is located in Seagull Estates, a pastel-pretty, family-friendly community of Olde-Florida-style homes, situated mid-island, 5 miles west from the Sanibel Causeway exit. Our shell-sand Gulf beach is across the street and a leisurely stroll away, down our private-access path. Restaurants, shops, art galleries, museums, and outdoor attractions like the National Wildlife Refuge within easy reach by car or bike, but a bit too far to walk to. Most places, except the public beaches, offer free parking; and most have bicycle-racks.

Getting around

Sanibel has no public transportation; to get around, one must walk, drive, ride-share or bike. One of the best ways to see Sanibel is by bicycle, on 25 miles of bike-hike paths. Enchanted Cottage is on West Gulf Drive. The Gulf Drives (East, Middle, West) run parallel to and south of the main road, Periwinkle Way; Tarpon Bay Rd runs between them. The Drives are a quieter, more scenic way around the island. Most restaurants and shops are on Periwinkle. The National Wildlife Refuge, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum and CROW Wildlife Rehab are all on San-Cap Rd, the western extension of Periwinkle, and just north of Breakers West. the historic lighthouse is at the eastern tip of Sanibel.

How to get there

Sanibel is an island off Fort Myers in SW Florida, in-between Sarasota and Naples. It is linked to the mainland by a scenic Causeway ($6 toll, one direction only). The only way to get there is by car/taxi/limo/ride-hailing service/private boat; there is no public transportation. The nearest airport is SW Florida International (RSW), Ft Myers, 28.4 mi./45 mins from Enchanted Cottage. Fort Myers is not served by Amtrak; bus service connects Fort Myers with Amtrak stations in Tampa, Orlando and Miami. Sanibel is about a 4-hour drive from both Orlando (and the Sanford AutoTrain station) and Miami; 2 hours from Tampa, 1 hour from Sarasota. Once you arrive, parking is free (2-car garage). Airport: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), Ft Myers, FL: 29.2 mi. Railway: Amtrak Auto-Train Sanford, FL Station: 206.9 mi; or Union Station, Tampa, FL, 2.5 hrs, 160 mi.
