With the gorge of ´los Tajos´ and hot water pools, many bars and restaurants, so highly recommended! Alhama de Granada is 50 km from Granada city center and just 15km. from Bermejales. If you are looking for a quiet weekend getaway or an exceptional beautiful and traditional place to visit, then Cortijo Bermejales is a suitable choice. Alhama de Granada is a place inspired by poets and travelers throughout the centuries. The romantic traveler Teofilo Gautier described the town as 'an eagle nest hanging from a huge rock or peak'. With a population of about 6000 inhabitants, the village has retained its traditional charm. Roaming Alhama, the carefully preserved Moorish district, lets you go back in time. . Situated above a mountain gorge, surrounded by fertile fields and a hilly landscape of almond and olive groves, the whole area is a blast for the eye. Due to its rich history and beautiful almost impenetrable location, Alhama de Granada was considered to be one of the Nasriden's pearls, an Islamic dynasty ruling the territory of Granada and Malaga. The name Alhama is derived from the Arabic word - Al-Hammam - which means 'thermal baths'. Since the Roman times, the healing properties of Alhama's thermal water have been recognized and sought after. During the period of the Reconquista, Christians paid large sums of money to absorb some of the water. . The takeover of the Moorish Alhama by the Christian troops in 1482 came as a blow and caused the beginning of the war in Granada, which ended ten years later with the expulsion of the Moors from Andalusia. There is enough evidence to suggest that the Moors had a special love for Alhama. After the Moors were expelled from the city, Abu Al-Hasan - the Moorish ruler of that time - expressed the words 'Ay de mi Alhama'. Today, it is still used in Spanish to express that you are sorry. The best view of Alhama is the impressive ravine Tajo, which you can find behind the Iglesia del Carmen. As a result of limestone rocks that have been carved for the past thousands of years, there are numerous hiking trails and sights within the Tajo itself. As you enter the gorge, you will find clearly marked trails that lead you past the ruins of ancient grain mills, stone-old waxes and various local sights: important sites related to the battle of Alhama and local folklore, and even a small chapel marking the spot where, according to legend, a Christian knight was miraculously saved from a 150 meter high fall. Most are clearly marked and indicated. The river also offers some great places to swim in the summer months. If you have a lot of energy, you can walk through the gorge of the narrower Embalse to Los Bermejales (there are two - see below) - you can follow the route. The main square of Alhama, across the road, offers a number of good restaurants and tapas bars. Restaurant La Seguiriya is recommended. You can eat the best tapas in the nearby Bar Tigres, at Plaza de la Constitución. Alhama de Granada (Baleneario) spa is a few kilometers outside the village center. It is clearly stated. The hotel is open from April to November and offers a wide range of treatments. The water has an average temperature of 47ºC and is rich in bicarbonates, magnesium, calcium and sulphates. The properties of these baths have been known for hundreds of years. An increasingly popular and free option are the hot baths located next to the official spa. The thermal water comes from a cave and has formed a series of natural baths - each with their own temperature, which emerges in the ice-cold river running parallel to it. It's a great way to relax here, especially after a walk in the gorge. When the hotel is open, you can also swim in the outdoor swimming pool fed by the thermal waters. This is worth a visit and costs only 6 € for the whole day. Near If you want to cool off during the hot summer months, then Bermejales is more recommended. This lake is just 12km away from the center of Alhama. The Bermejas lake offers sandy beaches, safe swimming opportunities and a wealth of water sports. The lake is a popular spot for locals during long, hot summer evenings, where barbecued and camped on the waterfront. Just off the beaten track are the beautiful natural swimming pools along the river of La Resinera. and is the beginning of one of the most beautiful walks in Andalusia - along the Rio Cebollón. We stayed here in summer and we loved it! So close to the lake, we went swimming every day. It was lovely with the cool breeze that would blow in the evening and we barbecued and enjoyed the view from the veranda...
