PLOCKTON in the Western Highlands of Scotland must be the most scenic village in Scotland, and it is a paradise for painters, photographers, hillwalkers, sailors and many others! It is situated in a sheltered corner on the shore of Loch Carron – so sheltered in fact, that visitors are astonished to see palm trees growing in the gardens there! Loch Carron is a sea loch (fjiord) which opens onto the Isle of Skye’s ‘Inner Sound’. Drumbeg, 19 Harbour St., Plockton is an1860s terraced house with four bedrooms and sleeps eight or nine adults. A downstairs bedroom has a double bed, and of the three upstairs bedrooms, one has a double bed and the others twin beds. Additionally there is a ‘fold away’ bed and two children’s cots. Duvet covers are provided but we prefer guests to bring their own...PLOCKTON in the Western Highlands of Scotland must be the most scenic village in Scotland, and it is a paradise for painters, photographers, hillwalkers, sailors and many others! Duvet covers are provided but we prefer guests to bring their own together with their own pillowslips, sheets and towels although these can be provided by arrangement. The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine/dryer and other small electrical appliances. A BBQ is in the garage, together with the tools and garden chairs and there are picnic tables in both the front and back gardens. There is a toilet/bathroom downstairs and a toilet/shower upstairs. The house is heated with storage heaters and there is an open coal fire and electric heaters. There are two video players, two flat screen televisions, plenty radios and a multitude of books. (If you take a book, please leave one!). A pre-pay coin phone is provided, and there is a telephone kiosk (bright red, traditional) just across the road. Mobile phones get excellent reception and broadband Wifi is available so bring a laptop. At the rear of the house there is a large conservatory, set up as a dining area. In the shed/garage there is an extra toilet and wash basin – very handy when there are a lot of guests – or kids, or if you are having a BBQ! Also in the shed is a child’s push chair should you need it. Private parking is available at the side or behind the house. Our Manager, Amy Campbell lives nearby and will be available to answer your questions regarding the house or the area. She can arrange to have coal delivered, find a reliable baby sitter, or have basic groceries delivered from the local shop should you plan to arrive late in the evening! You may be interested to know that the house is the UK home of the owners Alan Burrell (a Scot) and Khin Soe Tin (aka Suzie) who is Burmese. We live most of the year in Manila, Philippines running our ‘villa rental & yacht charter’ business at a beach area called ‘Puerto Galera’, and spend July and August at home in Plockton. We hope that you will find No. 19 more of a comfortable ‘home-from-home’ rather than a ‘commercial letting property’! PLEASE NOTE: DRUMBEG, PLOCKTON IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR RENT MID JUNE TILL MID SEPTEMBER. IT IS IN USE BY THE OWNERS DURING THIS PERIOD.More

Dissapointing
Plockton was absolutly beautiful. Drumbeg was not. We knew that the property was a little dated and that was fine as we have a dog and we didn't want to worry unduly about her in the house. However, a once lovely home is now in need of much investment. Mice, mould and muck. Our stay was made uncomfortable by the need to clean everything, bed linen was un-ironed, marked and worn. There is something wrong with the drains which makes the bathrooms smell. Kitchen units are so old draws tip out when you pull them. Mouse traps in cupboards and on the floor was unsettling and dangerous for kids and animals. Furniture and soft furnishings are very well worn, marked and dated. There are no smoke or CO2 detectors and the place seems to be wired with a network of extension cables. On the up side the property has a fantastic large garden to the front right on the exceptionally scenic bay. As the weather was sensational during our visit we stayed outside as much as we could . The rental price did not reflect the quality of the interior and I'm left feeling a bit ripped off. Sad because it could be amazing.

What a relief to find a rental that doesn't pretend to be competing in a lifestyle magazine but provided an environment in which our family from 2 year olds to 70 pluses could relax and explore this magnificent part of Scotland. The photos on the website don't do Drumbeg justice either internally or externally and we can send you some of ours if you want.. Amy the caretaker was very helpful and, in spite of it being the start of the summer invasion of tourists, the locals were very friendly (and clearly knew Alan who, we gathered. is considered one of them!).Hopefully Drumbeg will be kept on the rental market so that we can come again.

Eccentric
A spacious cottage with an eclectic collection of furniture and fittings. Mostly very comfortable, although heating and water heating could do with a bit of updating. Kitchen excelled in the provision of cooking equipment. The lovely helpful Jan was there when we arrived, and we felt comfortable that we could contact her if any problem arose. The location was perfection; right by the harbour and the views from the bedroom windows could not have been better. Plockton is a gorgeous place; we can highly recommend Calum's Seal Trips, Plockton Shores restaurant and the walk to the coral beach.

A very comfortable home in an interesting town
Drumbeg is perfect accommodation for three couples. Comfortable and well equipped it also has the luxury of a solarium in the back yard. It did rain from time to time (surprise surprise)but dining and socialising in the sun room diminished the gloom substantially. On those beautiful sunny days we took advantage of Drumbeg's lovely garden across the street and on the bay. For anyone touring Scotland, a visit to Plockton will provide another perspective on the country and a stay at Drumbeg will enhance the experience.

Drumbeg offers beautiful views, comfort and a great housekeeper.
We found Drumbeg on the Plockton website and although the owner lives elsewhere in the world, it was easy to make contact with him via email and the booking was made without any problem. It offered everything we were looking for: at least three bedrooms, two bathrooms, the owners were happy to have pets staying at the property and, best of all, Drumbeg was on Harbour Street right in the middle of Plockton. The Housekeeper, Jan, was easily contactable both prior to and during our stay. She called round on our first full day to ensure we had everything we needed and she also rang the day we were leaving to ask if we'd enjoyed our stay and had found everything we needed in the property. If you're looking for contemporary accommodation decorated to a very high specification, Drumbeg is not for you, but if you like real fires, sofas you can sink into, a well-stocked (if unmatched) kitchen and well-appointed bedrooms then you'll thoroughly enjoy Drumbeg. Location-wise, we absolutely love Plockton, it certainly is the jewel of the Highlands. It offers a great base from which to explore both the islands and mainland, although there is plenty to do in the village itself, from hiking and walking to cayaking and other watersports and everything in between. There are certainly lots of eateries to choose from. We particularly like Plockton Shores restaurant but you do need to book for dinner if you want to go. We enjoyed Drumbeg so much that we came home and re-booked for next year - we didn't want to miss out on this lovely accommodation!

About the neighborhood
As noted above, PLOCKTON in the Western Highlands of Scotland must be the most scenic village in Scotland, and is a paradise for painters, photographers, hillwalkers, sailors and many others! Drumbeg, 19 Harbour Street, is one of the original village houses built in 1860s. It is on the main street in the centre of the village with spectacular views across Loch Carron to Duncraig Castle and the awesome ‘Crags’ above. The name Plockton comes from the Gaelic word “Ploc” meaning a promontory and “ton” – a small population centre. Plockton’s population is about 325 in the winter to about three times that in the summer. Duncraig Castle is a young castle by Scottish standards – built in the 1860’s by one of the Mathieson family of the Hongkong’s shipping and trading firm Jardine Mathieson – where it had a historically had a significant role in the Far East opium trade! It was a ‘stately home’ until WWII when it became a naval hospital, and thereafter for many years it was a domestic science college for west highland ladies. It is now a bed & breakfast facility. Plockton is an excellent centre for exploring the Isle of Skye and the western highlands, from Knoydart to Torridon and Inverness to the outer islands. The local community is vibrant and energetic, and visitors will find truly warm west highland welcome awaiting them. The late July- early August Plockton Sailing Regatta ~ the ‘Whisky Olympics’ brings Plockton sailors, aficionados and their families from all over the world.
