le Puget 'whose liberal board doth flow/ with all that hospitality doth know'
Yes, the location of the Domaine is perfect in its immediate setting of rustling Alders and tall sheltering trees. The spread of Barn and Farmhouse: a wash of burnt umber and oak, green shutters and autumn's wine and gold Virginia creeper, is beautiful in itself but it is also situated in a particularly lovely configuration of rolling hills and fields. Sunflowers and Sorghum, swathes of irregular bleached fields and sudden unexpected views of the Pyrenees rippling away in the distance, all grace this part of the world. Add to this a crystal clear swimming pool, nearly empty roads and the nearness of umpteen small villages to explore at leisure and you have almost all the ingredients of a first class holiday. What really makes it so special however is the hospitality and generosity of the hosts, Janie and John, who aim to provide both bodily comfort and intellectual and aesthetic stimulus. Their success is evident in the many return visits we and other guests have made. They have a vast collection of books of every kind and you could spend your entire visit learning how to be a great cook or walking the entire region immersed in its fascinating history and unique architecture. Or you could learn about the region's viticulture and how to enjoy fine wines. And in September you can let warm, ripe figs drop into your hand. This is a true 'liberal board' and it is from our hosts that we have learnt 'all that hospitality doth know' [Ben Jonson] and for this we thank them.

We stayed at Le Puget to celebrate my husbands retirement. Eleven of us stayed here. It is a beautiful typically French farmhouse which is clean, well furnished and has everything you need. It is set in unspoilt countryside but still close enough to local towns with their great markets. The owner John, was the perfect host who gave an insightful local history lesson, and recommended local places to visit. I would certainly recommend Le Puget to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful region of rural France.

What a gem!
Le Puget is an absolutely gorgeous, rustic farmhouse in southern France. We were a group of 9 family & friends in the area for a wedding, and le Puget had more than enough space to accommodate us. The views were stunning - including the old Cathar town of Gaja-la-Selve which sits on the neighboring hillside - and on a clear day you can even catch a glimpse of the Pyrenees. There are numerous indoor/outdoor dining and lounging areas, billiards/table tennis/foosball/piano for entertainment, a pool, a nice charcoal BBQ grill, and mowed walking paths to facilitate exploration of the property. The communication with John before and during the trip was absolutely fantastic; he was incredibly helpful and hospitable in every way imaginable. We give this our highest recommendation, and would definitely love to come back again!

Wonderful wonderful wonderful!
We only had a short stay, but will be returning next year for a wedding, and wanted to check things out. From the moment we turned into the drive we knew this was the perfect place. John could not have more helpful, taking time and care to discuss what we want, even down to live musicians on the day. The venue itself is, simply, wonderful. It offers every possibility it seems: gorgeous views across French countryside, a picturesque village on one horizon, and small lake, grassed lanes for gentle strolls, large terrace and courtyard for entertaining (up to 100?), and abundant grassy areas for chats and nibbles and drinks. Inside is cool and spacious, and upstairs presents comfortable ensuite bedrooms. The kitchen area is very appealing - well stocked and able to cater for large groups. We are already excited about going back in June, and would quickly recommend it to anyone who enjoys peace and calm and a touch of rural French magic for a special occasion.

A magical stay in the magical Le Puget
Our stay at Le Puget was TRUELY magical. The house is exceptional, with all the tools to create some delicious meals and BBQs. Ridiculously comfy beds, beautifully decorated rooms, and so many games, cds, records and dvds to keep us entertained in the evenings. John and Jaynie were the perfect hosts giving us lots of interesting and useful local information and their warmth and generosity even extended to helping us when I was ill! The setting and their land is wonderful, walks by fields of sunflowers, a beautiful lake and a wonderful viewing point to watch the sun set over the mountains (in the company of a friendly horse) with a lovely glass of wine. .... and then the pool!!! So clean and big, with the perfect comfy pool furniture and inflatables! So many fond memories were made and so sad to leave. We will be back! I cannot recommend this beautiful place highly enough!

Fabulous
The Farmhouse was situated amidst stunning countryside, very peaceful which was exactly what we were looking for. Whilst the temperatures soared, the Farmhouse remained cool, particularly at night. It was very well equipped, everything you could possibly need was available. John Haward was an excellent host and introduced us to exceptional Lanquadoc wines which this area is renowned for, he was also an excellent source of local information. Mirepoix, the nearest small town was delightful both on market days and for evening meals. We hope to return.

A perfect retreat
Le Puget rose to the occasion with aplomb and style. Celebrating a significant birthday with 13 people from all points of the compass was a tall order but Janie and John handled it with ease and grace. We were never hurried, never worried, and drifted from meal, to terrace, to garden, to pool, to meal, to bed in a dreamy daze. John's cooking was superb and inspiring, and inspired me to try some of his dishes and publish on my food blog Hecichera. Take a look for a longer post on Le Puget.

About the neighborhood
This is an area of grand sites and big views, few people, quiet roads and open country, pretty town and villages, all steeped in history. Ancient cave dwellers, the Romans, Visigoths, and the 12thC Cathars, have all left their mark. We are on the same latitude as Siena and the hills and pencil pines are reminiscent of Tuscany. There are local lakes and rivers to picnic, swim, go boating or riding by. Our local town, Mirepoix, is one of the most lovely and ancient town squares in France and has a wonderful Monday morning market and some sort of event or festival almost every week in the summer. The Domaine itself is 300 metres up into the rolling foothills of the Pyrenees. You can walk or cycle from the door for miles through our land and the oak woods that surround us, with huge views of the mountains.

How to get there
Toulouse (about an hour) is a major international airport, recently voted best airport in France, with many flight links and a TGV station. Carcassonne airport (about 30 mins) has Ryanair flights from several parts of the UK. Car hire is easy at both airports. Le Puget is about 15 minutes from the Castelnaudary junction of the A61 motorway. The estate is private and secluded, but easy to get to and easy to find. We will send you detailed local travel directions, and can offer some suggestions on places to stay / things to see if you are arriving by car.
