Above and Beyond!
I was beyond pleased with our choice when we got there. Keywords- when we got there! We had to Sacagawea our way into the mountains to find it which I'll be honest, was a little intimidating, but the owner had given us great directions! I also must note that if you read all of this and decide that it is a trip that you'd like to take on with your own family please be aware that the roads are not something you want to travel with a Toyota Corolla. If I would've seen the road leading up to our house or to our hiking spots beforehand, I wouldn't have booked thinking our vehicles might not have made it. 4x4 is definitely recommended. This was top-down jeep territory if I'd ever seen it and reminded my husband so much of the offroading he'd done in Colorado with our older two boys and his brother this past summer. Thankfully our expedition and our besties were able to hold their own. Tire spinouts happened, and quick muttered prayers were said! My oldest would even grab our toddler's head on occasion because he was scared it might bounce off. Other than the adventurous and somewhat intimidating (dare I say- fun) drive up to the house, the cabin was as lovely and as comfortable as could be. There were sweet little signs that said, "take what you need and leave what you don't", a real wood-burning stove, on the side of a 2000's version, a beautiful wood deck, entertainment center loaded with every board game or movie you could think of and local art hanging on all the walls. The beams in the living room and kitchen gave me cabin owning dreams. If I could pick up the little dream and plop it down in a pasture next to a pond at home, I certainly would have. This was a very comfortable and lovely stay! My one and only suggestion to the owners would be to check some of the deck spindles, as a small child could very easily fall through because a few are ready to come loose. Thank you very much for being amazing hosts and making our vacation a 10/10!

Great House, great location!
The house was very clean, and had all the amenities for a wonderful stay. The kitchen is fully stocked with all the needed cookware for cooking dinners. In addition to cookware, there are spices, coffee, flour, sugar, and even rice and beans. I found this to be very thoughtful and incredibly cost-saving. The bathrooms were well stocked as well with toilet paper, towels, rags, and even Kleenex and odor spray! We had done a lot of research ahead of time, and knew that Jasper was in a dry county, with a smaller grocery store- so we stocked up on groceries and alcohol in Little Rock before arriving. I'm glad we did, because the house is a 25-30 minute drive from the city of Jasper. And about an hour drive to a liquor store. I had also done research on the best places in the Buffalo River to play with children. The Steel Creek and Ponca areas were all advertised as child friendly. The Leatherwood House is literally about 5-10 minutes from both locations. We really hit the jackpot!! The house had two great porches for sitting outside and enjoying the scenery. We were really amazed at how remote and rural the area was. One day we went down to the Steel Creak access, and were the only people in the whole area all afternoon! Overall, we had a great time, and would recommend this house to anyone.

So friendly and easy to work with!
This place is beautiful AND pet-friendly (not easy to find in this area of Arkansas). We loved the fact that it was up in the mountains and very secluded, but also close to all of the activities nearby. It's the perfect place to get away from it all! Pam, the owner, was incredibly easy to work with, not to mention accommodating. I would recommend this place for anyone looking to explore the Ponca/Buffalo River area.

Peaceful,Calm and Beautiful!!
This was our first Christmas after losing my husband of 22years. I have 3 young adults and a 10yr. I had to work Christmas this year so I wanted to take my children somewhere that was in driving distance but quite and away. I am Blessed to have found the Leatherwood House!! The owners were prompt to reply via email or phone when inquiring about home and things to do in area. The home was relaxing and spacious. Beautiful view at all times of day. Loved having the washer and dryer. Home supplied with plenty of extra linen for entire stay. The comfort and coziness of this lovely home gave us the ability to enjoy and embrace our time together during a difficult time. Thankful for the Owners in sharing their home and allowing us to find such Peace!! We loved the Lost Vally National Park!! It was a Great trail and hike with Beautiful hidden treasures, Eden Falls and caves!! Enjoy!!

Fantastic find
My husband and I recently spent 3 nights at the Leatherwood House for a Fall weekend getaway. It truly exceeded our expectations in almost every way imaginable. When we walked in the door, my husband said "this looks like a scene in a movie!" The house is so quaint and inviting, yet spacious and modern in terms of amenities. The location is perfect, within 10 minutes from a number of wonderful hiking trails, the Buffalo Outdoor Center, river access, etc. The house is nicely secluded, situated down a long gravel driveway, so you really feel like you're "away from it all." This is a good contrast to a lot of the cabins in the area, which are located close to or even directly on the main roads. All in all, I would recommend this house to others in a heartbeat. We couldn't have enjoyed our vacation any more.

Unique, Lovely and Secluded
I happened across this property while searching for something close to where our family had scheduled a family reunion. After arriving I feel like we hit the jackpot. The house is a mile or so down a private road in the mountains. Totally secluded and built artfully into the mountain, nestled in the trees. The house is just cool. 3 levels of decks, one screened in to enjoy the evening free of bugs, plus the layout of the house is just so unique. Open living room with lots of windows to enjoy the view. The kitchen was fully equipped to do some baking and home cooked meals. We loved all the antique furniture throughout the house (and I had a nice soak in the claw foot tub!). So many thoughtful touches: bookcases with a diverse collection of fiction novels, another upstairs with even more nature and non-fiction books, a huge movie DVD collection, the fridge was stocked with a bunch of common condiments, and spices were the cabinet. The house was also spotless, my sister's boyfriend commented how he wanted to hire whoever cleaned because it was so impressive! At the last minute we found out that he couldn't find a sitter for his dog, but it was only $20/night to bring him with us! Definitely worth it. She even had some pet food dishes in the entry way. We wished we could stay longer and hope to plan a trip just to come back.

Secluded, comfortable, and close to all the Upper Buffalo features
It's hard to stay much closer to the Buffalo National River than Leatherwood House. We squeezed two small families into the house a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Practically across the road from Steel Creek campground and river access, and just down the road from Ponca (and the Elk Center, the Buffalo Outdoor Center, the historic cabins, Lost Valley hiking trail, the elk viewing fields, and Boxley Valley), Leatherwood house is the perfect home base for a vacation exploring the Upper Buffalo. Pam is a talented artist and the paintings she shares with visitors in the cabin will have you wanting to take a piece of her work to commemorate your stay. The cabin is beautiful and well equipped. I was especially impressed to see a washer and dryer (rare!) and with the multiple areas to sit and visit outside on decks, screened porches, etc. They make the house seem twice as large! (Tips: Check out Low Gap Cafe just down the road for an amazing meal and a unique experience! Elk are best viewed just after sunrise and just before sunset in the Ponca/Boxley area; bring binoculars if you have some. If you make it to Jasper, Emma's House of Junk, the Chamber of Commerce artist shop, and the Cliff House Inn restaurant (south on 7) are not to be missed. Lost Valley Canoe has basic groceries if you forgot something... but nobody in Newton County sells alcohol, so bring that with you. If you get to Harrison, stop at Leonardo's Pizza for some amazing food and even more of Pam's artwork on the walls.)

About the neighborhood
Leatherwood House is approximately 2 miles off of Highway 74 and very secluded. We are located on the mountain in a hardwood forest above Ponca and the Boxley Valley. You can see Leatherwood's mailbox from the entrance of the Steel Creek State Park. The 2 mile long driveway borders the state park and the only thing back here besides wildlife, is the cabin and walking distance past the cabin but not in view is the owner's home. It is a gravel drive and the hill leading up to the cabin is gravel so if you are traveling on Street Bikes you may want to call and speak to the owners about accessibility. There is plenty of parking next to the cabin and some travelers trailer in their horses, tethering them in the woods next to the cabin as there are 225 acres on the property with plenty of old logging roads and a lot of horse trails in the park and surrounding area. You are a short drive from the Buffalo National River and canoe rentals in Ponca and the Wildlife Center where you can see specimens of the local wildlife, learn about the elk herd and all the local activities of hiking, canoeing, fishing and hunting. We are also close to Mystic Caverns which offers a breathtaking tour for people of all ages. Antique collectors will be more than satisfied at the non-stop shopping in Kingston, Harrison, and Eureka Springs. Jasper is filled with quaint boutiques where you can find the work of local artists or visit an open art studio. Quaint diners/restaurants complete your day with a meal out on the town. A new resturant has opened just a 10 minute drive from Leatherwood House, Low Gap Cafe, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you use Google Maps type in Leatherwood House Jasper, AR. If arriving from Ponca, Arkansas: Turn on Hwy 74 go across bridge and up mountain. At the top the first road on the left is the entrance to the National Park, about 100 yards further is the first right which is the gravel drive to Leatherwood House. You will see our big blue mailbox on the left. We are the first road on the RIGHT as you come up the mountain from Ponca. Go almost 2 miles on the gravel road (remember we are secluded) and you will come to a big rock that says Leatherwood House and points LEFT up the hill. The house is at the top of the hill. If arriving from Jasper, Arkansas: Turn on Hwy 74 and go 10 miles you will pass Low Gap Cafe on your left, keep going until you see our Big Blue Mailbox on the left, turn RIGHT onto the gravel drive across from the mailbox. If you come to the Park entrance you have gone about 100 yards too far. After you turn onto the gravel drive you will go almost 2 miles (remember we are secluded). You will come to a big rock that says Leatherwood House and points LEFT up the hill. The house is at the top of the hill. There are no other houses back here except the owners which can be reached by going straight through the gate instead of turning left and going up to the cabin.
