Very peaceful with amazing views, Stein Inn great and plenty of choice for meals at Dunvegan which is a short drive away.
Hope to return to Skye and would definitely book Lusta Cottage again.
The cottage is very comfortable and has a good outdoor space.

Stunning location, comfortable
The view from the conservatory is simply stunning, looking out over Loch Bay to the Outer Hebrides on the skyline 25 miles away. The Stein Inn is within walking distance and the cottage is well placed to explore the Waternish and Trotternish peninsulars. It's well equiped and comfortable, with plenty of space for our party of 6. There's no phone signal, but the WiFi worked well. We certainly want to return.

Dear Bob, Thank you so much for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Lusta Cottage and look forward to welcoming you again soon! Our best tip for a mobile signal is to stand by the window in conservatory or walk onto the croft - but very glad to hear the WiFi was working well. Best regards

Superb holiday
We had a fantastic week at Lusta Cottage - helped hugely by wonderful weather. The cottage is excellent - well equipped with everything we needed, and it was really wonderful sitting in the conservatory with such fantastic views. The children (18,20 & 22!!) had great fun crabbing off the jetty at Stein. We also had some excellent meals at the Inn. The best day of our week was kayaking around Loch Bracadale - our guide had never seen the sea so still! And my best moment was walking down towards the cliffs on the far side of the peninsular and disturbing two Golden Eagles, who rose up before me in a slight tangle of wings, before soaring off into the distance! All in all a great place to stay, and a wonderful holiday. Thank you so much Craig and Sue.

Stunning views across to the Outer Hebrides. Fantastic sunsets.
When we first spotted this property on the website the view sold it to us instantly and we were not disappointed. We had 7 fantastic days with great weather. My only negative comments is that the property is a little dated (but you can see this from the photographs, so it wasn't a surprise) and we had problems with a couple of the locks on interior doors jamming, of which we informed the owners. We had a great stay and would recommend this property to others.

Thank you so much for your lovely review and recommendation.
We are delighted that you had a great stay at Lusta Cottage. We totally agree with your comments - the photographs on the website are intended to be an accurate reflection and do show the decor as slightly dated. The cottage was redecorated inside and out within the last 2 years and we had planned a revamp to the furnishings in 2020/21 but had to postpone due to the uncertainty and travel restrictions.
Thank you for letting us know about the interior door locks - they have now been sorted out - our apologies for an inconvenience.
We hope we can welcome you back to Lusta Cottage soon.
Best regards

Cottage in amazing location with spectacular views.
Cottage is in the most beautiful location I could have spent my whole holiday sitting looking out at the view.
The interior of the cottage is a bit dated but it had everything we needed and plenty of space. We would definitely stay here again.

We are delighted that you had a great stay at Lusta Cottage.
We do agree the cottage is a bit dated, but we hope this is accurately reflected in the website photos. We plan to update the furnishings in the very near future, once the uncertainty and restrictions are totally over.

Warm, comfortable, well stocked and fabulous views
Had a great week here, although it was a bit wet and wild the first two days! Luckily I had taken my wellies and waterproofs. The cottage was beautifully warm and cosy, the Internet was excellent (once we remembered to plug in the router) and everything else you might need was there. There are local shops in Dunvegan for the basics. We needed to book places to eat out quickly as not everywhere is open but the Edinbane was excellent (the Stein Inn was closed and the Lochbay restaurant fully booked). Once the weather turned sunny, had a lovely road trip round the Trotternish peninsula, stopping off at the Old Man of Storr etc. Also had a great walk around the Quiraing on a brilliantly sunny day with amazing views to the Outer Hebrides. Visited some of the local art galleries and Skyeskyns. The nearby boat and fishing trips aren’t currently operating but there is one running out of Edinbane. Dunvegan Castle gardens are open, but not the castle currently. Would definitely recommend the cottage.

Vistas impresionantes

Beauty All Around
Cute little cottage with everything we needed for our stay. It was easy to find and exceptionally clean when we arrived. We walked down through the croft, past the sheep and rabbits, down to the water and browsed the tide line while we made our way to dinner at the Stein Inn. I thought the bartender at the Stein Inn was great, the ambiance there is amazing.
A few things took some getting used to, particularly the electrical switch arrangement and the use of the washing machine.
One of the highlights of the trip was eating breakfast in the conservatory and looking out to the Hebrides. Would definitely visit again.

Weekend Stay
Had a lovely time in the cottage with my daughters. We all enjoyed the beautiful views from the conservatory the cottage is set in such a tranquil spot. Just a short walk down the hill to the Stein Inn and handy to get on to the main road to travel round the rest of the island. Would go back again.

Waternish is a fabulous place to use either as your base for exploring Skye or simply for enjoying the local amenities and relaxing in the peace and tranquility of the area. It is the central of the most prominent peninsulas to project north west into the Minch. It is an extremely pretty area with much croftland and forestry overlooking stunning sea views at every turn. There are several places within a few miles of Lusta Cottage that are worth a visit. These include Fairy Bridge dating from the early 1800s and apparently named because it was believed to be the haunt of fairies ........rumour has it that the Chief MacLeod was given the famous Fairy Flag by his fairy wife (before she left him returning to her own people) to be waved only three times if the MacLeod Clan were in danger. The flag has been waved on two occasions and is now kept in Dunvegan Castle. At nearby Trumpan (5 minute drive from Lusta Cottage) you will find the remains of Trumpan Church where almost the entire Waternish population were massacred in the church in 1578 as a result of clan warfare between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds from the neighbouring island of Uist in the Outer Hebrides. There is a fantastic viewing area opposite here where you can enjoy superb sunsets. The churchyard itself has to be one of the most spectacular places to be buried in the world!Nearby you will find the path leading to the Waternish lighthouse for those of you who enjoy walking. Leaving Waternish, it is only a short 15 minute drive to the village of Dunvegan where you will find the magnificent Dunvegan Castle, home to the MacLeod Clan. The Castle and its beautiful gardens are open to the public and well worth a visit. There are also small seal boat trips that can be taken from here (one of our annual favourites!) and fishing trips that can also be organised from here. Parts of the castle can also be hired for social events and weddings. It is also possible to drive from here along the banks of Loch Dunvegan and then walk a reasonably short distance by foot until you come to the beautiful Coral Sands beach. The social focal point of Waternish is easily the Stein Inn, just a short walk down the Lusta cottage croft. There are also local Ceildhs (Scotttish Dancing and live music) held several times during the year at Waternish Village Hall.We are very fortunate to have both the Stein Inn and the Loch Bay Sea food restaurant within walking distance from the cottage (approx. 0.75 mile by road or a 10minute walk down the croft). The Stein serves excellent food in their splendid bar area as well as in their non- smoking restaurant. The Loch Bay Sea food restaurant is renowned on the island for its sea food specialities. Reservations are recommended for both. The Stein also has a very pleasant pub garden which fronts the loch – perfect for watching sunsets over the bay. There are no food shops, or indeed any shops at Waternish except for art and craft shops/galleries (see below)Sunday Papers can be ordered in advance from the Stein Inn!Portree has the CoOp slightly out of town on the Dunvegan road. This is the largest supermarket on the island and sells pretty much everything you need. In Portree town itself there is a butchers, small supermarket, newsagents and toy shop, pet shop, hardware shop, Boots chemist, camera shop, florist, chocolate shop and various other sports and tourist shops together with some great coffee shops (our favourite is Café Ariba). Jans Vans is also out on the Dunvegan Road and is a huge hardware/garden store that sells all sorts of useful things!Dunvegan has a small general store, two bakers with coffee shops, a chippy, a health food shop, and a fishing tackle and gun shop together with a few restaurants/hotels and tourist shops. There is a Royal Mail post box approximately 100 metres from the cottage where mail is usually collected at least once a day.Local Art and Craft shops and Galleries < Skye Skyns, a 5* tourist board award exhibition tannery run by Clive and Lydia. It is a fascinating place to visit and they are happy to provide a guided tour of the tannery downstairs. Upstairs their shop sells wonderful sheepskin rugs, waistcoats, slippers etc and various wool related products. Dandelion Designs is another delightful gallery and gift shop down by the waterfront run by Pat and Cathy.Activities>The following activities are a few of the many pursuits readily available on Skye – more details are found in the lever arch file in the lounge or the notice board in the kitchen. There is also a great Tourist information office in Portree which will be able to provide all the up to date information you need.Walking/Climbing (Everywhere - see guidebook!) Fishing (Enquire at Fishing tackle & Gun Shop, Dunvegan or Dunvegan castle) Diving (Waternish Dive centre)Seal watching (by Dunvegan Castle - Highly recommended!)Swimming/Gym/Bike Hire (Portree)
Getting around
It is advisable to either bring your own car or rent a car to get around the Isle of Skye..
There is no bus or train service to Waternish. Buses do run from Portree to Dunvegan, and passengers will need to get off the bus at Fairy Bridge, at the entrance of the road to Waternish, but it is then a 3 mile walk to Lusta cottage.
There is a taxi rank in Portree, but taxis are not a common form of transport on the island - they will be expensive and waiting times may be lengthy.
