There is also a small cloakroom toilet from the hall and the main reception room which has an open fire and seats 5. A connecting door leads from the main reception room to the second living room which has a wood burning stove, sofa bed and foldable dining table and a small kitchen and shower room at the back. A staircase leads from this living room to a double bedroom.
There are TV's with DVD players, books and games in both living rooms. The house has free wi-fi (whilst we do have the best available on the island it may be slower than you are used to.) In addition to the wood burners, the house is heated throughout by electric radiators and storage heaters.
We have recently converted our attached outbuilding into a games room with pool table, darts, table football and a separate utility room. Bikes can also be stored in here.
The price is inclusive of electric, bedding, towels and 1 bucket of coal for each fire.
There is parking for 2 vehicles next to the house and plenty more at the top of the road.
Guests can enjoy the passing wildlife such as otters, seals and porpoises through the window or sitting in the front garden, a pebble beach is revealed as the tide goes out. We are also perfectly located for hillwalking, cycling, kayaking or simply enjoying the tranquil surrounding.
Tigh Na Mara is situated at the foot of a private road approximately 4 miles east of Tarbert and just under an hour drive from Stornoway Airport.
During off-peak season bookings can be more flexible, please contact us for reduced rates for lower occupancy or with any questions regarding accommodation.

Tigh Na Mara Self Catering Accommodation is in a beautiful location on the shore and has a picturesque burn running at its side. As a precaution we have fenced the garden and there are gates which provide access across the burn and to the shore, to keep our own and visiting children safe. Please ensure that young children are supervised at all times when playing outside.

Comfortable and characterful period family house in idyllic stunningly beautiful sheltered sea cove setting on Harris
We really loved our week in late May staying right by the seashore in this idyllic peaceful family home with large well-equipped kitchen and comfortable bedrooms all with mesmerising and uninterrupted views across the cove and bay to the islands beyond. We had calm and settled sunny weather and often saw seals and otters swimming across directly in front of the house and seabirds washing their feathers in the nearby stream: altogether a wonderful haven for wildlife. We visited just as a couple staying in the main house which has ample room for a family of 5…(fun games room in lean-to at the back) there is also an original annexe with similar comfortable double bedroom with sea view, a shower bathroom, smaller kitchen and sitting room: so ideal for a second couple or additional family staying. Tigh Na Mara is within 10 mins drive of Tarbert to the west and of the beautiful Isle of Scalpay to the east and 20 mins from the stunning pristine beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost and Huisinish (30 mins beyond) on Harris’s west coast. For us it was the perfect base for exploring beaches and mountains alike: thank you Eva for your helpful suggestions showing us the best of Harris and for sharing your treasured family home…we will be back.

Magical Harris
We have stayed at Tigh Na Mara previously and this stay was equally wonderful. Eva, went above and beyond to enable our Christmas to be the best it could be. She could not have been more helpful. We walked every day and covered most parts of the island during our stay. The Stag that came to visit us at the property every day, Discovering Rheingale and the old settlements, after a long and beautiful walk, with a visit from the seals along the way and lunch on Christmas Day at the deserted beach on Braigh Mor, again after a trek across the hills behind Husini Bay were the highlights. Can’t wait to come back.

Incredible Holiday
Stayed here for a week The house is stunning, beautifully kitted out and the setting is just breathtaking. We enjoyed swimming in front of the house very much and all of the stunning beaches! All 4 children absolutely loved it indoors in the games room and outside exploring. Spotted seals, golden eagles and otters. We will definitely be planning a return, we’ve fallen in love with the house and island. Great communication with Eva.

Absolutely wonderful!
What an amazing week we had at Tigh Na Mara. The house is even more lovely than the pictures show. We could have spent a week just looking out at the views and every-changing light . We saw seals and an otter, a couple of very pretty sunsets and my daughter had a (chilly!) swim from the beach by the house. However we did explore beautiful Harris and found some magical places (Huisinis beach perhaps the favourite although hard to choose). We chose the house as we wanted somewhere beautiful and peaceful and it was indeed the perfect place to escape to. Eva is extremely helpful and efficient. We had a small problem with lights one day and within a couple of hours of texting her she had arranged for an electrician to come out and the problem was fixed immediately. Tigh Na Mara is beautifully furnished, comfortable and we had everything we needed. Just a note for others coming to stay-there is no longer a food shop on Scalpay (however there is an amazing restaurant that we went to!). Thank you so much to Eva for sharing her special family house. This was a trip that we will never forget.

Fabulous cottage in amazing location
We had an absolutely wonderful stay here. The house was well thought through and the location second to none. Harris and Lewis full of epic landscapes. A place for total relaxation and restoration. The house had lovely history to it and Eva's communication was excellent and so very helpful. We came together as two families post covid and had a truly wonderful holiday, thank you.

Lovely house & location
We had a great stay at Tigh na Mara. The location is great, some lovely walks nearby. The views are terrific and the little rocky beach at the house is lovely to sit at in the evening. The house is well equipped and is very comfortable. We only used the main house, not the annexe although did have a look and it’s the perfect combination if 2 families (or grandparents) are holidaying together. The games room is brilliant the kids loved it, such a great addition to a really nice place to stay. Would recommend.

Tigh Na Mara, Isle of Harris
Stunning property aptly named House by the Sea, couldn't get any closer to the water.
Well equipped and fantastic games room for rainy days.
Beautiful views and close to ferry port.
This accommodation is easily five stars.

Just lovely
The location of this house is wonderful. We saw seals,an otter and numerous birds. It has everything you could need and the host Eva is more than helpful. The games room was a big hit and we had lots of fun in it.

Just perfect
Had the most wonderful holiday. The house had everything we needed and was immaculate. It was in the most wonderful location and the bay was perfect for paddle boarding and swimming. Can't wait to visit again x

Wow - what a property, what a location!
4 adults & 4 children (under 10) + a toddler had the best week staying here. The house was spotless when we arrived and is in the most fantastic location with incredible views. It’s steeped in history yet extremely comfortable with careful attention to detail. It has everything you could need for a family holiday and is very well equipped. Swimming and paddle boarding from your own beach and sun downer BBQs were a definite highlight.
We can’t wait to go back and that’s without mentioning the fantastic beaches, walks and wildlife. Shhh don’t tell anyone but Tigh Na Mara is an absolute gem of a place on the most beautiful island of Harris.

Tigh Na Mara sits in it's own secluded bay at the bottom of a private road which runs through a working croft. When the tide is out there is a small pebble beach right on the doorstep.
Getting around
A car is recommended to get around the island however there is a bus route which runs along the top of the private road to the house. Tarbert is 10 minutes drive and the the golden beaches of Seilebost, Horgabost and Luskentyre a scenic 20 minutes drive.
The house is a great base for hill walking.
