The charming “Red House”
For a couple this was an ideal and very cosy retreat. Cottage was warm and well appointed, welcome pack was excellent and hosts were really pleasant but respected our privacy. However please note the cottage would not be suitable for anybody with limited mobility.

A joyous experience
We stayed for four nights in October with changeable weather; wind, rain, sun and dramatic skies. The Red House is the perfect location to explore Harris and to ramble round the immediate coastline or to hole up when the weather closes in. It’s beautifully restored, exceptionally well equipped and furnished and decorated to a standard we’ve not experienced before. We’re already dreaming about our next visit.

A fabulous place to stay
We had a fabulous week here in a week of very stormy, blustery weather. It is very close to Tarbert (30 mins walk, 5 mins in the car), yet feels very private and isolated. It is situated on a slight elevation overlooking the sea and several little islands - the views were wonderful. The rental has been renovated to an incredibly high standard - it really is very special inside - beautifully decorated, lots of quirky accessories, and all amenities you would need. We are very outdoors people usually, but on this trip we were at times forced inside by the storms - yet this was no issue as this rental is so cosy and relaxing, especially with the fire lit in the evenings. A special mention of course should go to Penny and Josh, the resident ponies, who quickly came to recognise that we bore many gifts of apples, carrots, and swede, and were always there to greet us as we travelled back and forth!

The most perfect place if you are looking for peace and tranquility. The Red House has it all. Tracey and Alistair have thought of everything and its a real home from home. We will definitely return in the future.

First Rate Holiday Let
The renovation of this traditional black house has been carried out tastefully and to a high standard, providing comfortable, well thought out and practical accommodation. The roof area is delightfully light and airy and is a lovely place to sit of an evening. The location of the cottage is very good indeed. The surrounding area has much of the best scenery in the Hebrides, there is a fine view of the sea loch from the house and there are no near neighbours. The house was fresh and spotlessly clean when we arrived and a quality welcome pack awaited. This included six lovely golden yolked eggs! Thoroughly good holday cottage for two.

Superb setting with spectacular views
The cottage is very well laid out with all mod cons. A very nice basket of food with local produce was provided along with tea coffee etc on arrival. Bear in mind that in the winter the ferry can be delayed which is a minus if you are on your way there but a plus if you are returning home. The cottage is only 5 minutes from the Tarbert ferry so I would suggest you use the Uig / Tarbery ferry and not the Ulapool / Stornaway ferry.

Perfect cottage in a perfect location and delightful, helpful hosts..
The Red House is tucked away in a tranquil setting overlooking the sea, islands and the wonderful Harris landscape. Despite this, it is just a short distance from Tarbert for shopping. It has been lovingly renovated and was very comfortable. It has been furnished and equipped to a high standard and includes lots of lovely, personal touches. During the day, after our adventures, we delighted in reading upstairs; an open and airy space affording lots of natural light and views to the south east. The sitting room downstairs provided a very cosy and comfortable spot for reading after dark had fallen. The wood burning stove worked well. The kitchen was very well-equipped and I particularly liked Tracey’s commitment to ‘eco-friendly’ products.

A secluded well appointed retreat for two
The Red House is exactly as advertised. Although close to Tarbet, you cannot hear any noise during the night or day. Your closest neighbors are sheep and two horses. In fact we did not meet any cars on the local road in the entire week we where there. The scenery from the Red house loft windows and outside bench is magnificent. As to the Redhouse itself, it is one of the best self - catering places we have stayed in.The workmanship in restoring the structure is unbelievable. It is a cosy place that is enjoyable even during a gale. Perfect for two people. It has all the modern amenities that you would expect including a floor heated wet bathroom. We will stay here again, next time we are in the Hebrides.

Idyllic cottage
Carefully decorated attractive cottage in beautiful surroundings. A stone's throw from the ferry in Tarbert but once in the cottage with a feeling of being at the end of the world. Great location for exploring Harris on foot, by car and on a racing bike. We recommend the Anchourage in Leverburgh if you don't feel like cooking. Been twice now but certainly will not have been the last time!

Absolutely Wonderful!
Fantastic! What a wonderful cottage with spectacular views and total serenity, yet an easy walk or very short drive into Tarbert. There are many other reviews that describe how wonderful this cottage is so there is no use repeating everything. Many thanks to Tracey, Alistair, and of course, Josh and Penny, two ponies that kept us entertained for 10 days. We would most certainly return if given the opportunity.

About the neighborhood
Explore the wonderful array of natural beauty - wild flowers on the machair, mountains and hills to walk, or walkways for the less adventurous . There are dunes, birdwatching, fishing for brown trout and salmon, geology, the night sky in winter and with the right conditions you can see the northern lights. The famous Atlantic beaches are great for surfing and wind surfing while the eastern coast is perfect for kayaking and sailing. Places of interest to visit include Rodel church, the Temple in Northton, the Scalpay lighthouse. Enjoy a beautifully situated 9-hole golf course on the very edge of the Atlantic. Take a day trip to St. Kilda, the Shiants or another of the remote and uninhabited Hebridean Islands
Getting around
Recommend bringing your own vehicle or there is a local car hire .Many people bring their bicycles with them. There are boat trips to St. Kilda and other expeditions locally. Local buses run from Tarbert to Stornoway and to south Harris. You may be able to borrow our 2 seat Kayak to explore the coast around the Red House.
