This was our second stay at Bridge Cottage and it was as wonderful as last year. The location is amazing, with the river at the bottom of the garden and great views of the moors. Tarr Steps and Landacre Bridge are both within walking distance. The village shop has all the essential supplies you'll need, as well as delicious locally...

Bridge Cottage is very characterful with a picture-perfect location on the banks of the River Barle. While old and rather quirky, the cottage has a friendly, cosy atmosphere. It was lovely to light the log burning fire in the evenings and to eat breakfast in the homely, well-equipped country kitchen. There are loads of walks right from your doorstep, but...

Fabulous old cottage on the river, with a lovely garden and great views. Very cosy, good beds, and a terrific log fire. Also the sky is amazing at night and it's worth bringing your telescope and star chart. The owners, Tony and Anita, also run the village store and post office, where you can buy all the essentials as well...

About the neighborhood
Withypool is a quiet unspoilt village situated in a shallow part of the Barle valley in the heart of the Exmoor National Park. The village has a remote, upland character and is surrounded by open moorland, much of which is common land. Most of the village lies on the north side of the river and follows the narrow roads along the valley contours. The traditional buildings in the settlement generally consist of lime washed rendered stonewalls with slate roofs. It is these buildings and their setting that help contribute to Withypools character.Along the banks of the River Barle grow the withies or willow trees that give Withypool its name and, crossing the river is the characteristic six arched Withypool Bridge. This was built around a hundred years ago to replace an old packhorse bridge that... more
